I'd be slow to trust them with all my traffic.

It's killing me seeing everyone else starting to get 100mbit connections :P

Any tricks with the router settings I should know of? For gaming etc?

Also where do I find my attainable rate, under what setting?

I know nothing about gaming. System Monitor then xDSL Statistics for attainable rate.

Set your MTU to 1492 and disable the firewall on your router.
also assign fastest DNS to your console.
Not to mention open your NAT.
(You will see an improvement gaming wise.)

    It's dropped to 20 download now :(

    I assume they're stress-testing it or something..

    Getting worse.

I'm getting 0.9 download on Fibre at 150m from the cabinet.

    This is beyond ridiculous.

In fairness to them I think all they do is just monitor the speeds and if there's any errors.

My setup has an absolute rats nest of cables now though! :(

Nice to see someone else on the 100/20 profile!
You've lower downstream attenuation than me but I've slightly higher attainables?
I know they don't matter at all but it's interesting to see.

I'd say you have a very clean line Alan.

    Hopefully.
A lot of my neighbours have UPC, there's 1 or 2 Vodafone's, a few Sky's, an Eircom and I believe someone even has Imagine! :P

I wonder will if at all my stats be effected the more people get Fibre?

Your attainables might drop a little, but vectoring helps keep noise's effect low. Your local loop is so short it has very little length to actually have noise induced, so the chances of it becoming an issue are very slim.

Have you changed any settings on the eircom modem/router? Can you print your DSL stats page from your router. I presume you are testing from a PC wired to the router.

Just out of curiosity is anyone else taking part in the SamKnows broadband measurement campaign?

I got my Whitebox today and it's a TP Link N600.

Yup. Should have it this week,

Yup. Should have it this week,

I have mine up and running a few days now.

    Cool little device.

I think it ends in November or something.

I plugged it in on Friday and all the widgets should be firing by tonight. Interesting so far. Hard to beat the e-fibre stats page all the same but this should give some real life results over time, i.e., a decent reflection of actual speed and quality of connection.

I got the acceptance email today. Do ye have all traffic wireless and wired going through the white box?

It checks wired traffic only, or so it seems.

It uses the wireless on the router to "monitor" traffic so basically the WiFi is disabled.

I got my log in details today and it's interesting to see how my connection is doing.

Be nice to get that free router at the end though!

What router model did everyone get btw?

    I got this one.

    Link.

That looks very nice indeed. Sorry to be a muppet here but do I disable the wifi in the Eircom supplied router and route everything through the black (white) box? If I get a fancy one like yours can I attach my usb printer to it?

You'll probably get the same one I have alright.

You leave everything as normal except you connect the WhiteBox into an Ethernet port on your router and then you connect everything that was connected via ethernet on your router to the WhiteBox.

So if you had 2 DeskTops in ports 2 and 3 you just move them into the WhiteBox.

I'm probably over complicating it but hope it makes sense!

They've disabled the USB Ports sadly however, when I connect my USB Handdrive it lights up.

I suppose you could flash DDWrt when the testing period is over.

    Got this WR741ND.

However - I actually am not using ethernet for any devices (all in a other rooms to my router) and I have Eircom TV - would the TV work connected to the White device?

** actually, I have an old Eircom modem/router. I could theoretically use this as an AP to my PC only (via wireless) and connect the white device between this and my F1000 - would any of you network guru's think this might work?

If you're using eVision I dont know if theres much point. The TV is hard QoS'd as part of a second vlan, it'll totally distort any testing done by the "whitebox" and Im not sure it'd work through it. Try it and see sure.

That's one of the original White boxes as far as I know.

    To be honest I haven't a clue.

Edit: Ed E beat me to it!

I notice it runs a custom firmware for the tests. Do you know if they load a useful firmware when test finishes?
