They are far more expensive, id say the extra money is well worth it

Better made, better performing. Think of it as an extra safety measure. What kind of driving do you mostly do?

I like Bridgestone, have had on my last 3 cars, no complaints.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,042 ✭✭✭Bpmull

My dad had nankangs on his car when he bought it they were crap tbh. Put on bridgestone turanzas and there's no comparison really. When I'm buying tyres I get turanzas there reasonable enough price wise considering how good a tyre they are. Failing that if you want a slightly cheaper but still good tyre I'd go hankook. I don't know much about tyres just going on experience have had both on cars. If you have a common size wheels then the tyres should be reasonable cost wise.

I am always preaching to people about the benefit of spending money on decent tyres. When it comes putting my money where my mouth is I generally end up going for either Bridgestone, Goodyear or Michelin on my own cars.

I have Bridgestone Turanza T001s on the Merc. When I got the car last August it had budget tyres on it and it was lethal in the wet, traction control working overtime to keep the thing on the road. The Bridgestones transformed the car and turned it into the composed machine you would expect. Now coming up to 35,000km on the set and still loads of life left in them and no sign of them going off in terms of grip either. Pretty impressive performance all round.

I'm gonna be getting one of these some time this summer. Priced for my car (195/60/15).
Ordered by the best at the top of the list but all are very good anyways according to my research.
    Dunlop Sport BluResponse 80.20
    Vredestein Sportrac 5 69.20
    Toyo Proxes CF2 76.50
    Bridgestone Turanza T001 79.00
    Pirelli Cinturato P1 Verde 80.60.

Had Vredestein HiTrac 2 on my car last summer. Absolutely delighted with them. Perfect grip in wet and dry

If your into drifting get linglongs. My s80 came with 2 on the back and if someone has so much as spat on the ground the rear is sliding all over the place.

On an unrelated note, anyone interested in 2 225/45-17 linglongs with pretty much no wear ? :-)

Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta are excellent and have read good things out their newer Ultrac Vorti.

like george above i had turanzas before and was pretty impressed with the lifespan and grip...

similar review with my firestone tz300's at the moment. around 15k on the car now, still looking like new, grip is decent. they were much cheaper than the bridgestones too.

We Got these tyres on my mothers car a few weeks ago and she finds them good. Exact same size as you and we paid 69 a corner fitted tracked balanced. But prices vary place to place anyway.

I'd stick with the Continentals if I was you. That or another brand such as Goodyear, Bridgestone or Michelin. I have Goodyear's at the minute and they have over 25k miles on them. Will be getting the same again when the time comes around.

i have had goodyear, bridgestone, kleber, hankook and a few other brands of tyre through the last few years. The worst by miles was the nexen. It didnt last very long and i had to change it before it was fully worn as the car was losing grip.

Have 4 Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 tyres on my car since Wednesday and they're simply amazing. Was driving today in the pouring rain and the roads nearly flooded and you'd barely notice it was wet. Incredible in the dry too. Can see why they're so popular on the car forums.

Don't ever put Sonar tyres on a car. They should be made illegal if you ask me.

If you're on a bit of a budget, the Hankook Ventus Prime 2 is a good bet. Got mine for £60 a corner fitted from a local tyre place.

I had Bridgestone Turanza on my Civic: good tyre, but very stiff sidewalls: made the suspension of the Civic very harsh.

Switched to Semperit Speed Life and the suspension is more comfortable.

Vredestein ultrac sessantas I found to be nothing short of stunning in the wet and a great tyre all round.

Looking for some recommendations for tyres for a 2011 passat. Currently have Pirelli's that it came with but need two replacements, been looking around local, south dublin, and everywhere I go they tell me whatever brand they stock are the best around for my price range (€120-€150 per tyre approx).

    Tyre size is 215/55 R16 97W

Some examples I have been given so far:

    Uniroyal Rainsport 2 - €151 each
    Hankook (don't know exact model) - €145
    Bridgestone (don't know model) - €140

Any recommendations of both tyre and somewhere reliable to get them would be great.

Maybe I'm wrong but that seems expensive for a 16" tyre? I got GoodYear tyres at €129 each and they were 17".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,728 ✭✭✭George Dalton

215/55 16 is an expensive size. That price of €140 for the Bridgestone is pretty good IMO. That would be my choice from the list.

My jalopy used Pirelli P6000s as OE, and I spent a couple of years buying 'em at EUR180 per-corner, 225/55 ZR16. I switched to Semperit a few years back at EUR130 each, and they're a fine job.

Bigger they are the better the grip? Not many cars with big tyres.

Had the same issue with 225/40/18 Doublestars which came with second hand alloys. Lethal in the wet. Before these went on my car, i had never seen a Mondeo go around a roundabout sideways!

Threw a pair of partworn Dunlop Sportmaxx on the back and car is fine (Even though the Sportmaxx got terrible reviews in the wet, still miles better than the Doubleshite)

Been through a few brands but only the bad ones stick in my memory :D

As i always say, your car is connected to the road with about the same surface area as an A4 sheet. They are probably one of the single most important safety features on your car. Dont skimp.

I bought some Firestone TZ300's today. 195/65/15 and they only cost 50EUR each balanced and fitted! Its the first time Ive seen such good prices since Ive moved to Ireland.

In Scotland I used to buy Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3's and they were just utterly incredible in the wet, and what I loved about them was that when I was pushing them, to the limit in the wet or dry, they would grip grip grip and then gradually let go, giving me enough warning. Nothing worse than a car that grips and then suddenly there is no traction.....

That is a pretty incredible price for those Firestones. They cost us more than that from our wholesale supplier. I find it hard to believe that somebody can run a legitimate business selling them for €40 ex VAT fitted and balanced.

Indeed it looks too good to be true, but surely there are bargains out there.

It once happened to me, in October 2009 I was looking for set of winter tyres, and as they were pretty much unavailable in Ireland I was just about to order them from eiretyres.com.
But something made me to google a bit more, and I found a garage near Galway having a set of 4x Nokian W (IMHO rather top brand winter tyres) in 205/55/R16 size, for half the price (90 down to 45 per tyre). And 90 would be still rather cheapish.
I got them and asked the garage man why where they so cheap, so he replied that he got them year before and no one was interested in them as there are no proper winters in Ireland so he wanted to get rid of them (that was before 2009 and 2010 harsh winters).
They were manufactured in the middle of 2008, so they were about 1.5 year old when sold.

So for 180 quid I got a set of perfectly good top brand winter tyres, which was absolute bargain.
I used them for 4 winter seasons. They've done nearly 40,000km on 3 different cars. And they still have about 4mm tread left, but they are not good anymore for winter conditions mostly due to too little tread depth and age (5 years).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,411 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

They could a very old manufacturing date on them or not have any E markings. Could also just be an unpopular seller and the tyre centre just wanted them gone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,271 ✭✭✭TireeTerror

I was actually searching on this forum looking for car places in Louth, as Im not from Ireland I didnt know where to look. Someone suggested this company in a thread and I sent them an email after having a look on their website and being impressed by their claims to being cheaper than online.

Its a big place, very professional, just like Kwik-Fit in the UK.

They are based in Dundalk just off the Coes Rd.

    McManus Tyres

    http://www.mcmanustyres.ie/

Here is a copy and paste of the email they sent to me.

Richard I suggest stay with the 195-65-15 it’s a regular tyre size.

The price range is between 42.50 for an economy to 75 for a Michelin.

    In between there are Firestone @ 50,Bridgestone @ 60.

The 195-65-15 will return the best fuel efficiency for you, also as 205-55-15 is a low profile which would be negative for fuel consumption.

All prices include fitment, balance, disposal and new valve stems on the wheels.

    Regards

    Shane McManus

    Mc Manus Tyres (Dundalk)

    On-Site Tyre Services Ltd.

EDIT: I just went out to see if I could see a manufacturing date, but there is nothing on the sidewall, would it be stamped inside the carcass? If so, obviously I cant see that now!

Goodyear efficientGrip performance cost about 90euro/tyre for 205/55/16.
    They get BA68db ratings.
That seems awfully good especially the low noise and i'm seriously considering getting a new set put on my alfa next week.

Are they too good to be true?

Stop the paranoia. Im not in anyway connected to the tyre shop. Someone on this forum suggested them and I emailed them asking for a price.

My tyres were balanced, I watched them doing it. That is assuming that big spinny thing is the balancing procedure! I have shiny whitish weights on the wheels now that were not there before.

As for my join date, well Ive actually been a member for over 2 years, but I was asked by Boards to open a new account as I had my business name as my username and as I couldnt be bothered to go through the steps of verifying who I was, or paying the 5EURO to subscribe to Boards for me to change the name and retain all my previous posts, thats why it seems like Im only recently here.

Bloody hell everyone is so paranoid, its quite comical. What I read from the posts is that some companies are not as competitive and would like to put people off....paranoid? You judge! :D

Lads/lassies, Pirelli P Zeros or Michelin Pilot Sport 3?
Have 2 Michelin Pilot Sports 235 45 18's on the front and Dunlops ???on the back(car came with them on the front).
Recessionary times and the PZeros are 40 sterling a corner cheaper.Worth the risk?

I still dont see anything that looks like a date. Is it in some form of code? I took some photos a moment ago of all the bits that potentially could be it. Do you see it in any of these photos?

BTW, here is a photo of the weight thing they added. Its not actually white as I thought, its silvery, like metal.

Have been quoted for a few options, see below. If anyone could offer any better recommendations I'd appreciate it.
