Just got my renewal quote and it's gone from €450 up to €950. The broker states that this is due to setanta restructuring their rates on high performance vehicles!!

Has this happened to other drivers and what did you do.

Can't really fork out €950 on car insurance

    Thanks for any help

I'm doing that now - but a lot of companies won't insure the car

When this happens a broker is supposed to find an equivalent product from a different underwriter at a sensible price. Happened me a few years back, and that is exactly what the broker did. A couple of years later the new underwriter went mad and I ended up back with the original, all the while my premium dropping. What sort of car is it? Have you an "age problem" or something?

Start ringing around, that's a ridiculous quote - it's not that much of a sports car!

Funny how they always restructure their rates upwards...anyways, I've had success with 123.ie for performance cars before, but best bet is to shop around as much as possible.

Humph. Not much of a broker. Are these characters in cahoots with Setanta, or what's the setup? That is, is there some sort of "exlusivity" thing going on, I wonder?

My insurance was up last July in my 95 FTO. I'm 28 with 6 years ncb on a full licence.
No one would insure me, all straight out refused to insure the car.
Eventually got a friend at liberty to swindle me onto the books via a staff process.
Most insurers told me it was because the FTO is a sports car, a car never sold to this market and something else i can't remember which through all of them is making it a high insurance category.
Then they added "the car out of production xx amount of years so that pushes it even higher"

I'm paying 750 and I have a feeling that will be going up next July....

I had a feeling that Setanta was too good to last forever...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,534 ✭✭✭foodaholic

    Well mine went up €500.
Any quotes of gotten so far is over €1000

A friend of mine went to transfer his insurance onto my old car a while back (subaru legacy 2.5 non turbo) and setana said they don't insure subaru's . Crazy, some cars just get a bad rep. Try a company called travellers insurance, I remember getting a good quote from them a few years ago on a supra.

What year is the fto, classic insurance might be an option

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,974 ✭✭✭Chris_Heilong

I was paying €2200 when I had the FTO and I was 33 with 1 years NCB.

Think mine was always around the €800 mark.

What company is that with ?

    The FTO is 1999

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,035 ✭✭✭goz83

It needs to be 15 years old and you can go with campion, as a second car for around €300. The fto is definitely one of the hardest cars to insure. I got insured by error, which was fixed about 2 weeks later when i switched to another fto. I now have a 97 mivec insured tpft for about €600 with liberty, who won,t insure them as new business. www.fto-ireland.com usually has up to lists of insurance attempts. Good luck! I have a plan for my renewal. Pm me if you're interested to know.

Next to impossible to insure? Yes. Ringing around everywhere is pointless. Its either axa (if youre 30+), liberty, if you get really lucky, or setanta, if you rang a couple of years ago.

Only other viable option is to insure as vintage if its 15 years old, or to drive someone elses fto on your drive other cars policy ;)

Got my renewal from Setanta today; up by €150 on last year for the Integra (not nearly as bad as I had feared when I read this thread initially). Got a quote that is nearly €200 cheaper from Liberty; apparently once you are over 30 they will take you seriously on performance cars.

    Male or Female OP?
    Could be the risk equalisation

i'm insured with setanta commercially, and my policy went from 440 to 960, and nothing has changed.

It's hardly an M3 now, is it?

The 1.8 has only 123bhp, the 2 litre around 170-190.

no wonder ftos go for pennys these couple last years, most of them around 1-2k mar-non turbos.
but someone who said fto isnt sports car clearly never drove sports car ever,on that size and weight vehicle 170hp packs a lot performance power, and considering price of car itself its great value.
As for OP maybe try to put missus on it and as suggested open drive policy, try the likes of liberty.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,987 ✭✭✭ottostreet

    Are they really?

Performance wise, around the same as an Integra Type R...I'd describe them as sporty as opposed to a sportscar (FTOs & Integras I mean). FTO Version R is probably the only one that could possibly keep up with a Teg Type R on track, but that's it. A good performance road car, IMO.

As for insurance, I've always found the GPX and Version R significantly easier to insure than the GRs & GXs...for some stupid reason. Even online, I can get quotes for my Version R, but can't for the GX. Makes no sense!

Since they changed the law you cant favour woman with lower premiums

If you paid attention to the thread, you'd see that I wasn't talking about the sports car comment. I wa talking about the insurance, which was the first part of your post.

On the sports car side, I would say yeah, they are a decent sports car. I drive a GPX and factory bhp is 197. Have you ever driven an fto? I suspect you haven't. Powerful, but no, not an M3...I would pick an fto any day. I had mine on a reputale Dno a few months ago and she was hitting road at 193 bhp

OK. Let me explain. You said €950 is a ridiculous quote and told the OP to start ringing around. I already explained that practically every insurance company will not insure an FTO. Liberty have been one of the only ins comps to insure them consistently, but this has changed and they also don't insure ANYTHING more than 18 years old (op is ok there for now).

So, back to the €950, which is actually about average for an FTO if you're lucky enough to get one insured. The ridiculous bit was the massive hike in the renewal premium.

I said that you don't have a clue, because (when it comes to fto's) no offense, you don't. Anyone can google specs, but unless you've tried to insure one, you haven't been through the kind of frustration many fto owners have. I can insure a GT500 more easily than an fto and i'm sure many faster, far more expensive cars can be insured for a lot less too. It's totally unfair and is a joke, but that's just the way it is.

ps...I recall a race between an fto, an M3 and a few other cars on a forum and iirc, the M3 did win, but the fto was only just behind. But the guy driving the fto looked like a fat and tired old jap. ;)

Well that's a lot more informative than your first post, and I was not aware of the difficulty in insuring one!

Mad money all the same for a sub 200bhp car - and if the OP has the 1.8...!

You realise that the power is only (a relatively small) part of the reason why these cars are so expensive to insure, right?

My renewal came in the post the other day for my 95 non mivec...
After a faithful 3 years I'll have to say goodbye to her.
Can't justify paying 680 for a bare bones third party policy. (I'm well aware that's alot less than what other people are paying)
Especially when I have a 99 clk320 sitting outside that I can insure for 290!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,072 ✭✭✭keithsfleet

Is it just me or is the fto market slowly creeping up in price?

For the good ones, I reckon it is. Another year or two when there's no Mivecs to be found, I reckon they'll recover a little.

There's a few posts about 1.8 FTOs, are they readily available over here? Never seen one advertised before. And to the post about an FTO against an M3 and only just losing...really? I find it very hard to believe, in my Integra (similar straight line speed as a Mivec FTO) there's absolutely no competition in a straight line against an M3.

But on the insurance, how old is the guy looking to insure it? I was paying 640 TPFT at 25 on the Integra with Liberty, I would of thought the FTO would be very similar
