Fair play to Prime Time for getting the various interviewees, excellent cast so far. Delighted that RTE are doing this, could seriously help the EGM attendance and outcome if there are still club votes to come.

Also playing spot the boardsie here.. :D

    2 so far?

You mean Travis Tygart's not a boardsie? :P

Although I wouldn't be remotely surprised if McQuaid lurked here..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,469 ✭✭✭TheBlaaMan

All Patsie (!) questions so far and his well-rehearsed evasive answers, she's scoring with very few punches. "It was WADA not us.....IT was AFLD not us".....

You nearly wonder if he managed to veto the questions.......

He just said the Bio Passport is a "totally independent system". He sure likes taking credit for something that's totally not his.

Claiming credit for bio passport, but it didn't catch LA so it's a WADA system?

Sadly she hasn't done her research and comes across unsure and not knowing what she's talking about when she tries to press. 2/10 for interview skills and preparation.

Paxman would have torn him new asshole.

I genuinely thought Pat McQuaid could not sink any lower in my estimation, but by god he managed it in those few minutes.

Wish Vincent Browne was doing the interview, Claire Byrne is useless. Never grills him on him answers, just moves on to the next point.

In terms of ducking and diving he could take a few lessons from Bertie. He came across as a devious no good gombeen man from an older Ireland that most of us are trying to forget. Would've had Tygart as a bit older from Hamilton's book, but that's no doubt mine own creeping years starting to show. Enjoyed it!

No she is not. She's one of the worst interviewers on TV and I have no idea why RTE have her doing Prime Time. It appears that she hardly does any proper research and she has a habit of trying to put words into people's mouths.

My missus concurs, as do I. VB takes neither excuses nor prisoners. Nor an extortionate salary from the public coffers for that matter.

I think Claire did a good job and was obviously well researched, she obviously is familiar with USADA report - although you might not agree she has to remain impartial.

In the end this is not totally black and white and its up to the viewer or more importantly the delegates at the EGM to decide.

The endorsement from CI CEO was cut to a one liner, bit surprised they didnt get a few more sound bites from Geoff to help balance things out as I've no doubt that he went into more detail re Pat's record

He didn't know the 1999 TUE prescription was back-dated until the Oprah Winfrey interview?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,138 ✭✭✭buffalo

Didn't really do anything for me - neither the interview nor Claire Byrne. He has a lot of explanations, but she didn't drill down on any answers, question any points, or laugh at his "we failed at testing Armstrong more often than USADA" story.

The rule was and is 6 months. PMQ exempted LA from the rules despite all the failed tests dodgy results and allegations since proved correct .

For the sake of any young riders coming through I can't get over that.

Was it not reduced to four months shortly afterwards?

hmm, so PmQ admits on Prime time he was always suspicious of LA. Yet still took donations from the same ...

Keep digging your own grave Pat. The guy makes Sep Blatter seem like a man of intregity when it comes to running a global sporting organization.

Annoyed me how he kept repeating that the uci have to work within the rules when he's head of the rulemakers table. Everybody from wada, usada and each federation was blamed, but not the uci.

you can smell the desperation on him to keep his job. Its disgusting that letter he sent out to the federations last week was a joke, the fact he uses UCI press releases to campaign is a joke.

He never admits to mistakes, everything is everybody else's fault. UCI have to play by the rules but then didn't play by the rules re the LA cortisone issue back in 99.

The backdated cream was never mentioned on LA's race form therefore it was a positive test, yet the UCI failed to abide by their own rules.

But sure that was before PmQ so not his fault ....

Oh and I'm not one of these "activists" I'm not a member of a cycling club nor never have been, I don't nor never have held a CI license, but I am a keen follower of professional cycling and the reason it is rotten is that the governing body's leadership is rotten.

The biological passport was his implementation but when it didn't detect LA then it was independent....

I really wish I was able to vote in this EGM tomorrow alas I cant.

I think it's safe to say that he hasn't enhanced his chances of a re-election with that interview, he comes across as.............'desperate'.

Stephen Roche & Tommy Campbell have both weighted in behind McQuaid :o:(

    Tommy says:
Ireland needs a person at the top table to keep us in the loop. Obviously, we cannot be holier than thou!

Is it down to that, ie. we need someone shouting for us at the top table regardless of what that person has been implicated in ?
Has Ireland really benefited from his tenure at the top table ?

    .........and from Stephen:
Pat Mc Quaid and the UCI have done great things for our sport ..........I sincerely believe that Cycling Ireland should nominate Pat Mc Quaid for the UCI Presidency because Pat has the Passion, ability and conviction to continue to grow and develop our sport but also continue to tackle all other issues with honesty and determination

Don't know if you actually watched the programme, but the point I was making was he repeatedly stated they had to work within the rules (as just mentioned by Glennamaddy). However when it came to this particular rule commercial interests suddenly became more important, despite the clear knowledge within the UCI of Armstrong's "dodgy" history

Simply another example of McQuaid's hypocrisy

Now I have no idea whether McQuaid was directly involved in the decision to allow Armstrong back early or indeed if he personally knew of the "dodgy" past - however he was the head of the organisation and must accept ultimate responsibility for that organisatioons decisions and actions (although he clearly thinks differently) - as I've said all along the buck stops with him for anything since he was elected into power in 2005

I would add that he started off saying all the Armstrong stuff was before his time - clearly this decsion was taken right in the middle of his tenure

Lance Armstrong won* the tour in the following years 1999-2005

Pat McQuaid Chairman of the UCI Road Commission in the following years 1998 -2006

How can he honestly claim Lance Armstrong wasn't on his watch or was before his time ? He was the person overseeing ROAD RACING FOR THE UCI AT THE TIME !

    * - didn't actually win, just doped and bribed his way to the top step.

In the Irish system it's still 6 months
    Return from Retirement

In accordance with the Irish Anti-Doping Rules, an Athlete who was previously included in the Registered Testing Pool and is returning from retirement may not resume competing unless he or she notifies the Irish Sports Council at least six (6) months before he or she expects to return to Competition and during that notice period making themselves available for Out-of-Competition Testing as required by the Irish Sports Counci

I think Claire is excellent and a far bit better than Miriam. Surely it's up to the researchers to get her up to speed? I doubt she is that casual in her job, always comes across as someone who has worked hard to get where she is.

And let's be honest, this isn't a major Irish issue. Step outside the cycling bubble and most people don't know about Pat McQuaid and the UCI debacle.

Presumably, applying that logic, it should not have been featured on Prime Time?? To me, it was featured on a prime time TV programme and it should have been properly researched and dealt with irrespective of its perceived importance etc.

TBF it was almost light relief from the whole abortion thing!

I though Primetime did a reasonably good job and although I felt PMQ should have been picked up on the inconsistencies it reflected the issues (though I would wouldn't I).
Though Travis Tygart and Jorg Jaksche were particularly damning...

A very wise head tweeted this today
@gerardcam 11h Would hate if good friends within our sport in Ireland fall out over the McQ issue.Friendship more important than this.Vote and move on..

And I think we should all bear it in mind.....

Prime Time aren't infallible and have messed up in the past. I just don't think it's fair to level the blame at Claire Byrne. I think, on the whole, she is a very good interviewer.
