300: Rise of an Empire

It's official: 300 is set to go to battle again. Frank Miller is writing the second take on the epic that’s based on his graphic novel, with Zack Snyder expected to direct. Snyder's final decision will depend on how Miller's approach plays out.

It's not clear yet whether the next 300 be a prequel or a spin-off of the Spartan tale.
Most of the original warriors (including King Leonidas/aka the uber-buff Gerard Butler) were killed off.

While another edition has been rumored all along, it was only last week that the second film was confirmed to suit up for more action.

I hope it's a prequel it wouldn't be the same without the hotness that is Gerard Butler

Really didn’t expect this..was only thinking the other day how ridiculous a second film would be…
Should leave well enough alone, its one of my favorites

I think we're missing the best part of this announcement:
    Meet the Spartans 2! OMG!

I actually thought 300 was a major letdown, just couldn't connect with it at all.

Is anyone even remotely surprised? All it takes is for any movie to make some kind of money at the box office and you are nearly guaranteed a sequel.
300 is bullspit anyway so I dont care.

Not sure how there could be a sequel or prequel to 300 unless its completely made up, since we don't know much about Leonidas anyway. I suppose he could do the battle of Platea as a sequel but we already know what happened there, he could do a version with Alexander the Great taking vengeance on Persia OR he could do Xenephon's march through Persia or something, that would be cool.

A sequel is pretty much set up in the closing shot of 300. I love 300 and recently acquired both a HD and Blu Ray version to go with my existing DVD. The picture is stuning and if the sequel is even half as much fun as the original then I know I'll be smiling.

Personally, I'd love to see the battle of Salamis getting the silver screen treatment. The burning of Athens would be a great scene

    Thank god!

If ever a film needed a sequel its 300, so much depth there. The characters were so layered it would be criminal not to have a sequel.

Wonder what will happen in this one. If I was making it I would have some evil emperor steal all the ab rollers in Sparta so the spartans have to come up with a hole host of new ab excercies. On a seperate but related note Sparta has a bumper crop of olives which need to be used up before they go rotten. The Spartans would then realise the oil made them work out even better so they would cover their bodies in it before every workout.

I can see the tagline now 300 2: Twice the defiinition, twice the oil.

They should do an origin story that explains why everyone in that movie is so very very gay.

It's ancient Greece, everybody was gay. They practically invented it!

Well the original was arse gravy of the highest order. 301 will be more of the same colonic drippings.

Definitely agree. While I don't think it is necessary at all for action films to have depth (see Shoot 'Em Up, Wanted, Iron Man etc...) 300 was so absurdly shallow that I really didn't get any enjoyment out of it. The whole thing just felt too hammy and forced - novelty wore off very quickly, and definitely didn't warrant a sequel. Think the episodic Sin City worked far better, with much more interesting visuals and stylisation.

I think people are being very harsh on 300. It's no Citizen Kane, but it was a very enjoyable, leave your brain at the door movie.

People wet themselves over fluff like Crank, which is just as shallow as 300. 300 may be as shallow as a puddle, but it was also extremely stylish and directed with considerable flair. It's a truly unique movie, and one that deserves returning to.

I agree with this. 300 was a bit of fun. I think I might even make myself a toga and watch it tonight. Can't imagine what a prequel would be about, so if anything, I'd hope it would be a sequel, just so we can see the battle they're gearing up for at the end of the first one.

300 is one of the worst films Ive ever had the misfortune of sitting through in the cinema. Police Academy 7 was better than this will be. Meet the Spartans is meant to be awful, which pretty much means it is at least twice as good as 300.

You must be joking. I love action films. I love mindless action films. I love swords and shields and medieval war. I love the concept of the peerless greek warrior.

But 300 really was ****. The charecters were boring and shallow. The dialogue was empty and ****. The action itself was a major major let down. Too much slow motion, and for the first time in a long time I just really didn't care who lived or died.

To top it all off there was the absolutely abominable voice over, that ruined any theme or atmosphere the film might have had.

I was looking forward to that film too. Probably the biggest let down for me in a decade, and that's saying a lot! 300 single handedly shook the foundations of my faith in legendary studios.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,592 ✭✭✭✭Dont be at yourself

I guess we'll agree to disagree. I wan't watching the 300 for fleshed-out, rounded characters, nor for deep, affecting dialogue.

The only demand that I had was that it deliver enjoyable action and pretty visuals, with a few snappy lines thrown in too. For me, it completely delivered on every count. The visual style of the film, from the setting to the character designs, was breathtaking at times. The action was over-the-top, but very well directed. Phrases like "Tonight, we dine in HELL!" and "Madness? This is Sparta!" have already gone down as classics!

On top of that, Gerard Butler was brilliantly suited for his role, and the soundtrack was perfectly poised.

But hey, different strokes for different folks.

I'd be almost interested to see what they come up with. Someone mentioned Xenephon's march. That could be very cool with a Miller style take on it.

    Source
Sullivan Stapleton, who appeared in the 2010 Australian crime drama Animal Kingdom, will star in the untitled 300 follow-up in development at Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures.
A source close to the project confirms the casting, which follows THR's report that Eva Green will play Artemisia in the movie that was previously titled 300: Battle of Artemisia. Noam Murro (Smart People) is directing.

The follow-up to 2006's Gerard Butler action pic 300 sees the Persian king-turned-god Xerxes lead an army against Greek forces, who have little training but are under the guidance of a general named Themistokles. (The giant battle at the center of this movie is supposed to occur at the same time as the fighting in 300.)
Stapleton will play Xerxes. The actor, who had a supporting role in Animal Kingdom, also will appear in Warner Bros.' upcoming Gangster Squad.
The studio is hoping to start production soon. Mark Canton, Gianni Nunnari, Bernie Goldmann, Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder and Thomas Tull are producing.
Frank Miller, who authored the graphic novel that formed the basis of 300, is writing a new chapter focused on Xerxes, but it's unclear if the movie will follow the path of that source material.

It is what it is, hyper-stylised nonsense, I dunno why people get so bent out of shape about, its a comic book fantasy movie not a historically accurate retelling of Spartan history.

its based on a comic book, so cartoony and stylised it what I would expect.

the comic is inspired by an old movie and the movie is based on the original story. so I wouldnt be expecting accuracy either

    edit
I think the first movie was a well made and version of the comic. the sequal/prequal is a bit of a cash in. will be more like the immortals than 300

Really enjoyed 300 but not really excited about the sequel from the look of the trailer above. Looks like a bit of a cash in to me. Hope im wrong though.

watched 300 years ago thought it was excellent.

Then somehow it became the gay mans porn. Watched it again recently and i see now why that came about seriously never noticed 1st time around.

Still a good movie, the posts above show that people liked 300 until it became a gay anthem of sorts now they hate it cos it has the "gays"

meh was a popcorn movie, watchable will watch next one but would prefer if Snyder directed.

I'm pretty sure that gay mans porn is the same as straight mans porn only with more penis on display.

Not very layered considering they forgot the rest of the war that happened at the same time. The 300 spartans (there was way more than 300, try a few thousand) where just one small engagement in a much larger battle. All the cunning and military tactics that the Spartans and greeks used is just ignored. As far as I know the Greeks won that war.

It's based on actual events. There's plenty of information on it, and the truth is much, much better than the fiction.

I think there was only 300 spartans though.

There was something like 7000 other greeks and the Athenian navy as well, commanded by Themistocles (all Greek guys' names were cool).

I'd say this'll be good craic. Good to watch with a few lads and few schoops.

    They Did.

I remember long before even the Frank Miller comic book there was a Steven Pressfield novel called 'Gates of Fire', which told this story in much greater depth and accuracy and there was talk a few years ago that it was being bandied about Hollywood, unfortunately nowt came of it but It's a fantastic novel and a film version would have been amazing to see.

If they'd make a less stylized film which sticks to the history, it would be far better. 300 was the origin for creating tv shows like Spartacus, which is utter horseshít. All style no substance.
