Was considering pre-ordering a PS4 but after having seen the price of the launch games it's left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Are these prices placeholders? Ridiculous considering their about 30 euro more than an average newly released 360 or PS3 title.

I'd say they are. Can't see them actually going for that price when they've been kept under €60 for over a decade.

PS3 Launch titles were 70-75, but quickly reduced (within about 6 months I think)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,896 ✭✭✭penev10

They've changed it to €64.99 now!

I notice most of the release dates are the 29/12, that doesn't seem right

Ridiculous that they can even think of charging that much for a game, be it for two months or six, that's crazy money.

Ah yeah but at least you'll be able to trade it in for 40-45 quid a few weeks later :D

Placeholder prices since no game pricing has been announced yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,283 ✭✭✭Glico Man

Everyone is upping their placeholder price at the moment to avoid a repeat of Amazon getting burned over under pricing the WiiU, so I wouldn't worry about PS4 game prices for the time being.

I remember buying MW2 on release for PS3 and it was 80 euros... wasn't worth it.

    MW2 for 80 euros hahahahaha!!

Yea . Smyths are rip-offs when it comes to video games.

I've never seen an €80 game in my life. I've never even seen one higher than €60, at least not a regular edition. That was harsh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,966 ✭✭✭Syferus

Saw plenty of 65-70 euro prices at both the PS2 and PS3 launches.

Anyone that knows the internet exists is a mug if they pay that sort of money for a game but the people that will be burnt are parents and family members buying presents.

Far Cry 3 is selling for €69.99 on PSN.

Apart from on PSN, prices seem to be consistently ridiculous there.

70 euros per game would be par for the course on a launch machine. I remember the day the Xbox launched at GAME were charging 80:eek:

Prices should drop to roughly the 60 mark after 6-12 months. It will be a good while before we see the prices we are currently enjoying!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,283 ✭✭✭✭RobbingBandit

Depends on what stores are selling games still at the launch, if only GameStop are they can charge what they like, if HMV,Xtravision and Smyths are open and selling games there will be some variation in the prices, it is going to be nearly 5 months before the PS 4 is released who knows exactly how much the games will cost.

I like the way modern games seem to increase in price yet decrease in length ,inversely proportional for some bizarre reason.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,841 ✭✭✭lertsnim

At least the PS4 games will be region free so I have no problems ordering from Canada and waiting a few days. No shops will see anything more than €55 from me for a game. And even at €55 it would have to be a spectacular game I must have.

Just make sure you are a PS+ subscriber and you'll at least get Driveclub for free.

It depends completely on the game. Some games are quite short but the likes of Skyrim or Red Dead Redemption can keep people occupied for ages. Not to mention that online multiplayer adds a lot of value for many people (although not me, personally).

Well, you're not getting the "full" Drive Club as far as I can tell. My guess would be a stripped down version with an option to "upgrade" to the full version, or microtransactions.

Also, I'm seeing €65 right now for the preorders, but I'm sure they'll be €59.99 come launch day. I at least hope for pricing parity on PSN this time around.

why not the full version? im sure it will be full version as multiplayer will be impossible if they offer a stripped down version, and from what i have seen of the game multiplayer looks awesome

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,286 ✭✭✭✭mdwexford

Because it says ps plus edition, if it was the full game it would just say Driveclub.

I bought MW2 at Smyths on release night and it was €50. Did you get a special edition?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 156 ✭✭bingobars

Can you pre order without paying the whole whack now? I think the 2013 tech budget is gonna be going heavily toward Sony

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,960 ✭✭✭DarkJager

Thankfully HMV are on the way back so Gamestop can shove their 80e games up their fat greedy arsehole.

    Obviously only a nipper so...

I remember when Street Fighter II on the Mega Drive was £80

amazon's pre-order prices are all £55 (approx €65) so I'd say €65-€70 will be the most likely B&M price.

Only getting the One game and then the few free games that it'll come with (F2P & Plus)

£50/€65 seems to be the RRP!

Paid £70 for ocarina of time back in 1997 (or so), but haven't paid more than €50 for a game in a long time! Doubt they'll end up being that expensive!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,835 ✭✭✭✭cloud493

I can't see 80, I can see 70. But with HMV coming back.. maybe just 60.

I paid 74.99 for the 1st Assassins Creed:(

Yep, Sony confirmed today that first party PS4 games will retail for the same price as PS3 games toady. Same as Xbox so. Third party developers can charge more as is seen with CoD titles.

Thought it was great imo. Loved all the assassin's creed games up to Brotherhood. Loved the stroy arch. But jasus €75 for AC, by the time that game came out I never payed over €50 for a new title. I shop around. Only the first 3-4 games I bought were €70 after that the price dropped.

There tends to be a lot of selective memory when it comes to game pricing. Early adopters are nearly always stung with high prices - it's the cost of indulging in new hardware. It does make economic sense - launch titles are crazy expensive to develop, and there's only initially a small userbase they can sell too. Eventually, more people buy the console and games begin dropping in price accordingly (although, oddly enough, this generation has seen them rise again after hitting a €40-45 average a few years ago). And you rarely have to wait long for discounts, not to mention the bundles that inevitably come with a new console launch.

And, really, games if anything are cheaper than they once were. Back in the PS1 era and earlier, new releases were routinely £40-50, especially for those who couldn't venture into the big cities regularly. Before that, things were often even more expensive, Street Fighter II being that most famous of examples.

Not forgetting some N64 games were going for £60-£70 Irish.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,528 ✭✭✭NinjaTruncs

PSN games are routinely 79.99 at launch.

I also remember paying 55 Punts for NBA JAM on the SNES back in the early 90's, which would be much more than €80 once inflation is factored in.

Its €60 for PS4 games. Microsoft is going with €60 also. The fact that they are using X86 architecture will mean developing games a whole lot easier and cheaper. The tools they have are pretty powerful and easy to use.

I think Saturn games were like €100 because of the cartridge technology they used.

Why are PSN game so expensive, surely they should be cheaper - no retailers fees, etc?

Eh, they came on disc and were no where near that expensive. Even the rare few games that had RAM carts included towards the end of its life.

I don't know exactly which console it was but they charged €100. I was reading it earlier.

I think its do with the PS+, so they can add 'discounts' to the PSN store version with a PS+ subscription.

Sonic 3D on the Mega Drive retailed for 80 pounds if memory serves me. Today's prices are more than reasonable imo

I'm assuming they think people will pay extra for the convenience. iTunes do the same.

The N64 had a few games that were £70 punts when released here. I think Perfect Dark was one with the RAM kit.

    No competition = high prices.

One of the top points of the PS4 that I took from it, was new releases being available to buy on launch night. So without having to queue at a store at midnight, without having to let it sit on your desk in work launch day, you can have it downloaded and ready to rock and roll.

I've moved entirely away from buying physical copies of games. Consoles are lagging behind, but next gen looks to making big plays in this regard. Launch titles on the high street will be in the €60-70 bracket for sure, but doubt they will be that high on the console's direct service. They want customers using that, it's more revenue for Sony and for the publishers. Expect a massive push from the highstreet, to buying digitally, and to do this, expect to see competitive prices ( unlike the fail attempt MS made at it with the 360)

Its one of the reasons I am going PS4, and something I took from their keynotes, their digital game sales service looked fantastic and competitive. PS3 friends have all moved away from buying on the high street, they've indicated the prices online are the same as walking into shops.
