Does anyone know when the list of allocated rooms is issued?

I applied as well and heard nothing. Bit rich of them to charge an administration fee and then not let people know whether or not they have it. Also thought it was coming out on the 12 June because of some issue about property tax.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 169 ✭✭lfqnic

Yeah, they said that was what caused the delay and that they expected to release them mid-June, if I remember correctly, so it should be any day now.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 480 ✭✭saltyjack silverblade

They have already released them. It's that list you posted. Do you know how many places are available on campus in total?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 169 ✭✭lfqnic

I have no idea I'm afraid, sorry. That list is the first round, and it also doesn't include scholars - don't know about society people.

Is the accommodation for Trinity pricey?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36 wklize

This is the reply I received, so the outcome of the application should be known by 22nd July

    Hi Claudia,

The review of PG room applications will begin on 8th July. It is expected that rooms will be offered by 22nd July; unsuccessful students will be notified by email immediately.

    Regards,
    Linda

So have they only allocated the undergrad rooms? From what I got told on the phone I was left with the impression that everything was done and finished.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36 wklize

Really? Well I have no idea then! I am a postgraduate student, and I got told that Trinity Halls are no longer reserved for Postgraduate students, but now they will end up living in the Campus. This was the previous email:

    Hi Claudia,

Postgraduate students will not be housed in Trinity Hall for the coming academic year.

It is hoped that campus rooms will be allocated to postgraduate students in July; the process has been delayed this year due to the introduction of new IT systems.

We will be in touch with you again in due course.

    Regards,

    Linda

that interesting. not sure whether to wait or not now as I have started to look for accommodation in Dublin. Does anyone know how many places in total are there?

I would like to know as well. My plan is to wait until the 22nd july when they seemingly make a decision, and then start to look for a place on my own. Is daft.ie the only option to look for a place? Although I reckon it is still a bit early

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 480 ✭✭saltyjack silverblade

I think it is where most look. I have been surprised how many places are already going. When I read about open evenings for rooms in apartments I got the shivers!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36 wklize

Open evenings? What's that? I have found no rooms but that's maybe cause I don't know how to look for them lol. I selected like places available to move in from september and there was nothing lol

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 480 ✭✭saltyjack silverblade

i think leave the move in date field blank.
or maybe we could start pressuring the accomm office into giving the places out sooner. seems a bit ridiculous to have to wait nearly a month when they have all the forms. im sure if they spent a couple of days on it they would fly through it!
do you know how mnay places are up for offer on campus?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36 wklize

I don't know that unfortunately :(, if they rejected my application I will have to start to look for a place. I am coming to visit Dublin August and just for a couple of days, I guess I should sort everything out when I am over there. Bit tricky indeed :/

I'm an undergrad student, my number was on the list but I haven't been offered a room by email yet (or at all really, apart from my number being on the list...)

Has anyone else been allocated a room yet? :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36 wklize

Well maybe you should try to contact them! My number is not even on the list I am starting to lose hopes lol

I haven't heard of any of my friends getting offers yet though, I'll probably contact them next week if I haven't heard anything at that stage!

Are you on the waiting list? :)

I spoke to Accommodation a few days ago to find out when I might hear about Trinity Hall and was also told that PG students would not be allocated a room there and would be passed back to campus. When I then spoke to someone about getting a room on campus, one person told me that they thought it was a possibility... but passed me on to somebody else, who is apparently the font of all knowledge on accommodation at TCD, who told me that less than 1% of PG students who apply get a place in campus accommodation. She also said that given that English is my first language, even though I'm from overseas, that my chances of getting a room are slim to none.

I believe there are around 300-350 places on campus, but these are split between all the scholars and society people who get rooms... and she also mentioned something about how my chances were worse because they are renovating two (or more) buildings so these aren't being given out making the number of PG students getting a place that much slimmer...

I've started to look, but I'm not having much luck... Think I'm going to have to arrange a trip over to Ireland before September to get something sorted. I just wish we had been told that Trinity Hall weren't going to offer places back when I applied... I wouldn't have bothered, and could probably have arranged something else!

That is so irritating. I was kind of counting on the campus accommodation. Must be some kind of reverse discrimination not to allow you in for speaking English! I have been offered a room at 650 per month with a deposit of 650. I don't want to hand that over yet if I am going to be offered campus in less than a month.

Received my confirmation today as well!

I'm an American coming to study Medicine- perhaps I received an early acceptance because I'm an international student?

    Scholar here, haven't heard anything...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36 wklize

Oh dear, I haven't heard anything yet. The chances that less than 1% PG students getting a place is rather shocking! I was expecting trinity college to be more organised. I hope I will hear from them soon, because otherwise I will need to find another way to get a place, which I suppose is only daft.ie.

Though I haven't seen many places on there either :( I am starting to worry

I know its a pain guys but don't panic too much - the vast majority of students don't get rooms on campus and still manage ok. I had to find my own place for first and second year and it was really not that bad - the worst bit was the panic that I'd be homeless in a strange, wet city. There are plenty of bedsits in Dublin to keep you away from all that! Start with daft and if you don't find anything there, the SU has an accommodation advisory thing (mightn't be open yet) with big lists of places to let. I think the halls-style rooms in NCI on Mayor Sq are also open to TCD students and even handier than Trinity Hall.

I ended up signing a lease way too early and paying loads of rent needlessly because I was so nervous, and other people fell into nicer places later on, so (if at all possible) don't waste yourself money and energy by panic-searching now for somewhere you won't need for another two months. You'll find somewhere :)

    Hey,

What do you suggest? To start to find a place at the beginning of September? What does SUI stand for? As far as I know the only place to look for places is daft.ie and myhome.ie, but all the properties are available before September. I will be over in Dublin for 4 days in mid August, do you think I should look for places then?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 169 ✭✭lfqnic

SU is the Students' Union - https://www.facebook.com/tcdsu you could try to contact them if you're really worried, they might have advice.

If I were you, I'd keep my eyes on places towards the end of the month and try to arrange a few viewings for your trip in August, yeah, though I'm not an expert. You can also check out newspapers when you're here. Undergrads don't start back until the end of September, so they shouldn't have snapped up all the places close to TCD by the time you move over. Anyone else want to weigh in on this? I can only speak for what I'd do.

This is the other place I mentioned, http://www.ncirl.ie/Prospective_Students/Accommodation

    Good luck!

I tried NCI last week when TCD told me that I had no chance of getting accommodation from them. I was (am?) number 50 on the waiting list for NCI. They told me they had never had that many people drop out... Think that one is a lost cause!

Thank you for the helpful hints though! I definitely can say I am feeling the fear of being "homeless in a strange, wet city"! :o

    Which email was that?

    Dear Newly Elected Scholars,

I am writing to you to confirm the accommodation changes being made for the coming academic year and the procedure required for each of you to take, depending on your choices and circumstances.

As outlined in the summary report of the Scholars' Meeting, the Committee has decided to take a stance on this matter that shall protect the institution of the Scholarship as it faces into a time of significant financial constraint with pressure being put upon it from several fronts. In doing so it is clear that the Provost has decided that newly elected Scholars shall be offered a room in Trinity Halls.

During the week Gavin Tucker (newly elect OCM), Isabel Kennedy (Accommodation Rep) and myself met with the Warden of Trinity Hall, Brendan Tangney. During this meeting Gavin and Isabel expressed some concerns that Scholars had voiced at the meeting discussion and several items that I had received by email. We have arranged for several considerations to be put in place for the coming academic year.

Firstly, we estimate that a maximum of ~50 newly elected Scholars will take up rooms next year in Trinity Halls (several students will be away on Erasmus and some with take Cash in Lieu of rooms).

Secondly, following viewing of the buildings and house options in Trinity Halls, it was decided that House 80 best suited the Scholars needs. Brendan Tangney confirmed that there are 10 apartments, (5 or 6 bedroom apartments) with NO twin rooms in House 80. These 10 apartments amount to 55 beds, just above our estimation of maximum room uptake. A Scholar will only be offered a single en suite room (unless two Scholars desperately wish to share a twin room - unlikely one would think) and as such no Scholar apartments shall contain first year students.

Thirdly, while Scholars may not completely fill House 80 Tangney said that the Halls administration would aim to fill other apartments in that House with postgraduates and mature students so as to minimise the first and second years in that building.

Finally, we have also discussed the role of the JCR in Trinity Halls. All residents in Trinity Halls must pay the €40 membership fee. As a result of this we have negotiated that it is appropriate for a Scholars' representative to sit on the JCR Committee and to ensure that a section of the annual budget that the JCR has at its' disposal is available for Scholars' events or use.

What do you have to do now?

If you are a newly elected Scholar entering Senior Sophister or completing your degree, you don't have to do anything. The accommodation office has a list of those entering their final year or postgraduate and will consider you for Goldsmith Hall when room offers are being made.

If you have applied to intermit your Academic course AND Scholarship, you cannot also avail of rooms, and as such should not have applied for rooms. Please inform the Accommodation Office if this your intermission if you have decided not to take up rooms.

If you are a newly elected Scholar entering your JS year and are going on ERASMUS and intend on taking Cash in Lieu, please email me back and inform me of this.

If you are a newly elected Scholar entering your JS year and DO NOT WANT TO RESIDE in Trinity Halls and wish rather to take Cash in Lieu of rooms, please email me and inform me of this.

Finally, if you are a newly elected Scholars entering your JS year and YOU WISH TO RESIDE in Trinity Halls, please consult with your fellow newly elected Scholars and email me back with details of the 5 or 6 Scholars who wish to reside together. I need to receive confirmation from all Scholars in the group of 5 or 6 that you wish to reside in Halls. Newly elected Scholars who are going to reside in Trinity Halls, but are also in courses which return to College in August (i.e. Medicine), please email me the date that College commences in August and we shall arrange for the early provision of accommodation in Halls.

For those taking Cash in Lieu of rooms beyond emailing me you just will have to fill out a specific section of the emoluments form in November, but I shall remind all Scholars about this closer to the date.

If you have any concerns or queries, please get in touch with me.

    Kind regards,

    Amy

Feeling kind of annoyed with the accomm office. If I had known there was less than 1% chance of getting in I would have saved the 15euro.

    Tell me about it...

I wouldn't have bothered applying, and could probably have secured a place in the NCI Halls if I'd known (and therefore started looking months ago).

You should be able to upload it to my.tcd.ie if you go to "My Applications" and then click "Add documents to support your application". If you then choose the application you want to add them to, you can select the document type e.g. Copy of Degree Certificate, or Official Transcript, or whatever else you want to submit :)

Alternatively, if that doesn't work, Bernadette Curtis (Executive Officer at the Graduate Studies Office) told me that I could email the required documents to her at taught.admissions@tcd.ie and she would upload them to my application on my behalf.

P.S. I've applied to Broadstone Hall for accommodation in September. Have you had any luck with your search?

It's in Dublin 7. I think it's about 1.7km from Trinity, which is closer than Trinity Hall! This is the website; you need to contact Louise Daly to find out if there are any rooms available. Email and telephone details for her are on the website! Good luck :)

There are quite a lot of "private" Halls in Dublin... but I've contacted a lot of them without any success (such as the NCI Halls, which has a HUGE waiting list)! Otherwise, they were a bit too far outside of central Dublin for my personal liking, or had negative reviews of the accommodation/location. As such, I didn't bother finding out if they were available or not! You can find some of these by searching something along the lines of "private halls Dublin" in Google.

I think time is of the essence as far as getting a place with any of them is concerned. Perhaps, if you have a trip booked already, you might get away with visiting them first, but I think they are all, generally, first-come first-served. I was going to make a trip over to Dublin to try to sort something out, but found that I needed to act quickly for the Halls. If you are looking for a shared house, however, then yes, I think you need to visit!

Accomodation update, after they sent me an email telling me I didn't offer a place, they sent me this one (below), can someone help me understand what the heck is going on lol?

    Dear Claudia,

Thank you for your email. I have checked your application again and see that you are an EU postgraduate student.

As these room offers have yet to be made, you do not yet need to go on the waiting list.

(To answer your question below, if you were to go on the waiting list, this would happen once the first round of room offers were made, and you would then put yourself on the waiting list in case any of the room offers were not accepted, and that would mean you would have a chance of being offered one of these rooms if they happened to become available. It would still not guarantee however that you might be offered a room).

    Kind regards
