I'm emigrating in two weeks and finding it hard to sell my car quickly! Is there an Irish equivalent to "we by any car"??

Do you have it up on done deal? Is it properly advertised and priced?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,237 ✭✭✭✭djimi

Plenty of cash for cars places around but you will get nowhere near the value of your car from them. Chances are if you are struggling to sell then you either have something that is in very low demand or you have not priced to sell. Try drop the price and see what bites; youll probably still get more than from one of those cash for cars sites.

Ìts been up on done deal for 3 weeks now. I have a 2004 Mitz Lancer 1.6 comfort. Metallic Grey. I have dropped the price to €2800, is this too high for this car?

Is there a friend you could let handle the sale of the car to?
You could give them a % of the sale

Its an option but I wouldn't like to put that burden on anyone.

"We buy any car" will fleece you for sure.
What car model/year? What price? EDIT, I saw the ad now.

Put it on adverts and let people make offers - just ignore the "swap my car" posters, I do.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,861 ✭✭✭Irishcrx

TBH I would lower the price a little, it looks clean but over 100k miles and an 04, the market just won't bite at that right now. If it was me looking I could get an 03 - 04 TDI Passat for half that money.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,216 ✭✭✭✭listermint

Quick question though, rather than worrying about it not selling in just 3 weeks. Do you need the money right away or can you leave it with a family member and let it sell over a longer time frame and have the money wired to you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

Not to worry you but a mate moved to UK and couldn't sell his bwm 318 for love or money.
Ended up giving it away for free as it was sitting on another mates driveway for weeks.

Yeah worst case is I have to leave it behind and get the money sent over. Much rather sell it. Is there and other site other then done deal and Adverts to place it on?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 890 ✭✭✭dh0011

    you could try carzone

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,813 ✭✭✭clintondaly

Why not hand it in somewhere to be auctioned,Merlins or someone like that, probably wont get what its worth but a good chance of selling it.

Park it near a tesco / supervalu entrance with a huge sign in the window, you may be lucky

Are you getting enquiries about the car at that price OP?

If not reduce the price further. When you do get enquiries get the people to see/drive the car. Sell it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 199 ✭✭PhotogTom

Won't get great money at an auction but will almost certainly sell. They make it pretty easy, TBH. The biggest hassle is having to take two cars to the auction site so you can still get home!

Since posting here I have reduced to €2500. I have a number of enquiries but all looking to PX with cash

    No good then.

Maybe include "no p/x" in your ad, plus the reason for sale?

To be honest they're not a good selling car, bland looks and even blander interior make them possibly one of the least popular cars in their group. My next door neighbor couldn't sell his 05 model with half the mileage yours has and he had the price down to €1990. I jokingly offered him a grand for it and he accepted, I then had to tell him I was only joking and that I didn't want it and he offered it to me for 750. I probably should have taken it at that price but couldn't justify even that money on a car I didn't want and probably couldnt sell on. He eventually just kept the car and said he'll drive it till it dies which will probably be a long long time as they are actually a very good reliable car.

Just out if interest what kinda mpg does yours get? My neighbor reckoned his was doing 40mpg around town and mid 40s on longer journeys.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,846 ✭✭✭discombobulate

If you do a search on Done Deal for 2004 Lancer theres another one in Dublin right under yours for 2000 with similar mileage although its a 1.3

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

Far too expensive for a quick sale. Price it at €1,999 and you might have better luck!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,974 ✭✭✭Chris_Heilong

I think it looks good at that price, expect people to try and hagal it down to around the 2k mark, 3 weeks is nothing, if you were not emigrating I would hold out. Its very hard to sell now as people are practically giving some cars away. My advice would be the same as the others here, maybe drop price to 2,300 put it up on as many sites as possible and hope for a call.

I find it around the same, I was sold it at 35mpg but I find it a lot better then that

While the OP may have to drop their asking price a bit, someone in the market for a diesel Passat is hardly going to be in the market for a petrol Lancer. Also where are you finding these decent 03-04 Passat diesels for under €2k as I will buy 2 of them and sell them on at twice that price? :pac:

Two are in the south, not sure on VRT I'm not trying to sell them I just said that you can get a decent one for two grand.

If 200k miles and UK plates is decent for you, then I hopefully won't ever have to buy a decent car from you :pac:

=) , Look I was in the market for a new car recently and if I spend the time looking now that I did then I'd find better ones as I looked at a few before I decided against buying one.

Anyway I don't want to hi-jack the OP threat talking about Passats. Point is as mentioned previous either lower the price a bit for a quick sale as it'll be hard to shift that Lancer and near impossible at the price your looking or hold out and have a mate do it for you while your away.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

    Irishcrx wrote: »

Obviously your definition of decent is different to mine. Some prices don't even include VRT or ones with interstellar mileage and their best days behind them. VW TDis go for silly money and imo anything that appears cheap is cheap for a reason.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,035 ✭✭✭goz83

A couple of Lancer estates on there too for 2k I would likely pick over the OP car. If i'm going to drive a Ms Daisy car, I would at least like room for the dogs. OP, it won't sell quick at that price, even though it's a reasonable one. The lancers are not "sought after" and a quick sale price is not much more than a dealer would give you. I suggest asking one what they would give you for the car and add a couple of hundred onto the price. Or hold out for someone to hopefully sell it while you're away. My friends brother has an 03 Astra and an 06 Hyundai Coupe in his garden, both left behind from family members to be sold and they have been there since last year. I offered the owner €1600 for the Astra in November before he left and in January he said he would take the offer. I refused and he said €1400, and I refused and said I didn't want it anymore. If you get a good offer (even if it's under 2k), it might be best to take it. I would personally struggle to justify a price of €1700 on that car, but i'm not a fan of lancers....i don't hate them either, they look ok.

Cars are getting more and more difficult to sell, the Mitsubishi Lancer were never much of a seller ...it is well overpriced at that The bland looks and with over 100k miles( even though its average mileage) doesn't help. Do not want to offend but I would see its price at around €1600 but there always someone out there for everything,

What about the local rag? Or stick an ad in the local Tesco/Dunnes??

OP unfortunately situation on the second hand car market is very bad.
I've been trying to sell my 04 Mazda 6 since mid February, so it's 4 months by now.
I have it advertised on nearly every car ad website, in local supermarkets, local newspapers, etc. I'm asking less than you (2100), and even though I have generally 0 response.
Over those 4 months I've received only few phonecalls, and no one yet seen my car.

    Sad but true.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,685 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Price it right and they will come .........

Remember we are in a deep recession. People aren't spending money easily but if you really want rid of a car, then make them an offer that will tempt them, or else be prepared to have it lie in the driveway rusting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,219 ✭✭✭The_Honeybadger

Op I had the same car up until about a year ago, I tried to trade it in a number of times and no garage i went to would take it. They are just not sought after for reasons previously mentioned, even though they are a great a to b car. Mine was a 1.3, the 1.6 is probably even harder to sell due to the higher tax. I eventually sold it to a family member at a knockdown price. If you want a quick sale € 1500 to €1800 should shift it. You'll feel robbed but at least you'll have cash in your pocket.

My bro was selling a car about 2 years ago. His mate offered him X amount, he said naw, thats too low, I'll try Autotrader/DoneDeal etc.

In the meantime it lay in the driveway as he drove his new car. It suffered winter, battery died, got covered in gunk, generally got tatty looking. Sold it about 6 months ago for a fair bit less than what his mate originally offered him.

In this market, if you are getting anything reasonable for a car you should take it. No use lying rotting holding out for money you ain't ever going to get for it. Supply and demand are the deciding factors, whether you like it or not. You got a car that isn't popular or people aren't interested in, then you are going to have to take a hit to get rid I'm afraid.

Bumping it up the listings on Done Deal will help too as a lot of people only bother looking at whats newly listed

Do a Dutch auction OP, knock 75 to 100 off the price for every day between now and when you go... Might work, might not... Someone might be be interested at a price your not at yet and as the previuos poster said, it'll keep it at the top of the ads on dd every day

I had the same issue. Its 1.6 and petrol 9 yr old car. priced to high id say mlre like 1900 . and take 1700. market decides so if no takers your too high.
