Believe it when I see it.

Its always quick to go up, so not quick the other way.

Petrol prices haven't really moved at all over the past 6 weeks strangely. Most places in Dublin averaging €1.55/€1.56 per liter with the south side been mostly cheaper by a couple of cent. But still I can't begin to image how pissed off people who were driving back when it was around the €1 mark are today as I know no different with today's prices.

I also miss the fuel forecast from Pumps.ie which hasn't been updated in 6 months.

It was 90 odd cent when I started driving about 4 years ago. Between the fuel and tax my wallet is just a glorified card holder

As far as I remember it was 79 pence when i bought first car in 2000. Thats about 1 euro. Can't see that it was 90 cent 4 years ago.

In 2009 petrol went under 1 euro.
In my region this was about 0.969 but I'm sure there were places in Ireland you could get is cheaper.

In 2008 it was over 1.30 so drop was really significant.

Then unfortunately from 2009 it's going up and up all the time.

I remember around this time last year we were all predicting when it would hit €2 a liter, and to say the least most of us were wrong :)

Don't ask me why but I would be surprised if we do see prices reach €1.70 again at all this year.

Ya I'm fairly certain it was less than a euro anyway.

There's a place out by Dublin Airport that has a sign quite similar to the one in your picture except it has a 1. before the 7 :)

    What a c0ck!
Mr Kelly, who lives in Malahide, said: "I have 10 creches that I made a million on last year. I don't need the money."
If he doesn't need the money then close the station and save the hassle of drive-aways and complaining customers

Think it has come down a bit lately alright. Diesel was €1.46 in the local Maxol I passed this morning vs the €1.50+ I was paying not that long ago..

It is coming down, albeit very gradually.
Cheap places (branded ones only) are now 1.42-1.43 and the dear ones are 1.46-1.48

When you spend about €100 per tank, every cpl helps!

Then staff would be out of a job.

While I agree, his comments show him to be a twat, remember that the quotes are from tabloid, and so may not be taken in the correct context, or rather misquoted to shock and outrage.

And it's his right, as a business, to charge what he thinks the product will sell for.

I still think it's a dear hole, and he's preying on the stupidity of tourists.

EDIT: Oh, and Petrol is 156.9 ish. Don't know about that other malarky, diesel. Edit 2: In Cavan town.

Unfortunately I remember when it hit 50p a litre and I thought it was expensive then (which it probably was relative to earnings)

You just have to check google street view to see how much prices have changed. Here is chawkes garage limerick on streetview showing diesel at 100.9 and petrol at 107.9.

Not sure what year it is but google streetview is only around for 3 or 4 years

Usually fill up in the Maxol on Constitution Hill, price last Sunday was 144.9c for Diesel, down from around 156-157 a while back. First time since I can't remember when the tank came in less than €90

Xmas 2008, early 2009 I was paying 91.9c per litre for diesel

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,985 ✭✭✭✭dgt

I remember in 2009 filling my car with petrol that was 99 cent a litre and diesel was 89 cent a litre. Those were the somewhat cheaper days....

I also remember when diesel was 49p a litre and petrol was 53p a litre. Better days again!

Of course then there was the 60s.... 1 shilling and 6 pence a gallon for regular

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,302 ✭✭✭Supergurrier

Was a late starter to driving at 24 but remember even in 2007 petrol being as low as 95c a litre and since as high as 1.72 motor tax on even a 1.4 went up almost 50% since.

Talk about being taken for a ride

just to pull this out from under the rug. The cause of the drop perhaps.

143 for diesel in Kinnegad and 1 hour later 149 in Galway

I do miss the days where 30 quid would get you across the country and back. I've done 1000 miles in the last ten days working. The wages got a serous kick in the balls. I'd love if they brought out a third diesel fuel rate for commercials. There was little or no point in me working the last 10 days. Would have come out with similar money on the dole.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,982 ✭✭✭Caliden

The base cost of the fuel still only accounts for 41% of the total cost. The cost of vat & duty is 51% of the total cost.

When I left Perth 13 years ago petrol was 0.54c per ltr and LPG which is used like diesel over here and all the taxis are on it was 0.32c per ltr

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

Mid to late 90s the petrol was 55p for years :)

Previous poster is not wrong about petrol being a lot cheaper a few years ago. I remember filling the 735 up with nearly 83 liters for under €100 about 5 years ago...

Calco and the likes have been hiked up already so it won't be long now till they hike up road fuels again methinks

Well they couldn't put both up, that would be one step too far. Best to stagger the increases so it's looks better.

I really wish they would do away with motor tax and lump it on the cost of petrol, that way it catches everyone (including tourists) but the sad fact is that the old motor tax charges are the golden goose and they wouldn't take in as much if the tax was on petrol. People who bought 08+ cars would also be up in arms.

The fact is though that you would need to be doing some serious mileage every year for the old system to work in your favour (even with the new tax bands)

True that, it didn't look as bad yet still being screwed!

I don't mind the motor tax as long as it either stays the same or wages increased with the rise.... Why am I talking about wages when I don't even have a job! :(

But yes, implement that system and there would still be people cringing somewhere. Human nature I guess, nobody likes paying taxes.

As for mileage, 25k miles in less than 9 months between 2 similar cars, not accounting other cars and vans driven inbetween. I do the mileage to justify such a car :)

Yep, I bought my first car in 1990 (was driving since 1988 but you only really pay attention to fuel prices when it's your car :)) and I was paying around 54.9p/litre (69.7 cent in new money :)). It spiked to almost 70p (88.9c) during the first Gulf War but settled down once Saddam had been put back in his box.

I think they play a game with the price of fuel.
They crank it up by a good bit and we all grumble and squirm about it, then they drop it back a little after a while so we all feel things are looking good. But they never drop it too much. Then they leave it for a while and then shove the price up higher again and so the cycle continues.
A bit like two steps forward one step back, but still moving in the one direction.
When I was learning to drive there was an Outcry almost Civil Unrest when petrol hit the 1 pound per Gallon (approx 30 cent a litre or 1.23 euro a gallon.
Now its over 7 euro a gallon.

It's €0.49 per litre of oil at $104 per barrel.
Refined it's about €0.56, so let's say €0.07 for every litre refined.

If oil fell down to $50 per barrel, it would be €0.23 for a litre of oil and then €0.30 for a litre of petrol refined.

    €0.30 basic cost
€0.41 with the Retailer & distributor margin (est)
€0.97 with the current duty (around 56c per litre)
€0.97 * 1.23 = €1.19 - that would be the cost of petrol if the oil fell down to $50.

This is all approximate, so I could be wrong, but it's around that much...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,883 ✭✭✭pa990

Last year oil was predicted to crash to $60 by a barrel (credit suisse and citi bank ), due to the abundance of oil, it never happened.

As much as i would like oil to drop to $50 a barrel, i don't hold out much hope.

If anyone is interested that's a quick copy and paste from my spreadsheet where I note everything in relation to my car.

This is just three columns copied (DATE - MILEAGE - FUEL PRICE)

Well chinas economy is slowing and the US is producing the most oil in nearly 20 years and they are using less SUVs so demand is down.

But dont forget most of what you pay at the pumps is tax. Out of all my friends (I live in Dublin) only one drives. It too expensive for teenagers

    But that's Dublin.
I barely know any person who wouldn't drive in my region.

Indeed, NOT driving is often not an option outside Dublin because of the shockingly poor public transport options (if they exist at all)

Even in Dublin, public transport is generally poor at best, unless you live along the DART/LUAS line.

If anyone is interested that's a quick copy and paste from my spreadsheet where I note everything in relation to my car.

This is just three columns copied (DATE - MILEAGE - FUEL PRICE)
So you can see what prices of petrol were for the last 5 years.

jaysus, what else do you note.that is just weird man

Not weird, makes it easy to notice when something is up with the car (fuel consumption increasing eg)

    I do something similar.
