I haven't seen a thread and with it being a major it probably deserves it rather than in the middle of the epic(not) thread.

If mods disagree that's no problem.

    Pairings out today

Rory, Tiger and Adam Scott out together.

What do you guys think of the Wicker baskets instead of flags? Think they are a bit silly myself - takes an element of skill out of the approach and replaces it with luck.

Personally I think that they look silly. The players won't be able to judge the wind as well with no flag sticks

If a professional golfer and his caddy are unable to read the wind due to the lack of flagsticks then they have a LOT more problems than that!

Sure poor old JP can't read American greens so how would he have a chance with the American wind

Interesting to see how this course will play, hasn't hosted since 81 so hard to gauge. Saw it posted on Twitter (forget who said it) that 6 of the par 4s are below 400 yards.

The penalty for missing a fairway at Merion will be extreme as posted by Justin Roses caddie Mark Fulcher on Twitter. There is a fair chance it will be thicker come Thursday next week too with the rain and growth they have had the last few days.

People who hit the ball straight, rather than long could have good tournaments there next week

Luke Donald will never have a better chance to win one!

Manassaero could be a good one aswell with his current form! :)

I think this is mannys best chance of winning a major as he is bullet straight and there are 6/7 par 4's under 400 yards so it definitely isn't a bombers course. In saying that there is par 3's over 240 yards and a par 5 over 615 yards.

That nonsense. Its a gimmick and a poor way to defend a parkland golf course. USGA policy of par being a target for the winner backfires when they have to do this to old courses. Well designed and fair courses will find the worthy champion - spinach adds more lottery factory than a US Open course shoud deserve.

And his driving has been poor lately. I fancy G-Mac again

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 742 ✭✭✭ItsChecoTime

I like the look of G-Mac as well, was on good form before missing the cut at Wentworth but imo that was down to tiredness, he's had a few weeks off and should suit the course

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,077 ✭✭✭✭vienne86

My first reaction when I figured out what this course is like was that Donald would go well, but as someone already said, he has not been driving well. I too would love G-Mac do it, and if he is on song, he just might get it. Good that Harrington went has a reasonable week at St Jude, but with the way he can spray it around off, he could run up a big score. I hate to admit it, but I think Tiger wil have a good week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,695 ✭✭✭ForeRight

It's just so difficult to see anyone but tiger winning it considering he won't use his driver at all. Stinger 3 irons every hole and after that his iron and wedge play is on fire this year(bar last week)

Coupled with his amazing putting 90% of the time this year he looks formidable yet again this week.

Aside from Tiger and GMac I think Jason Day might shine this week.

He has form in major championships and is fairly tidy off the tee.

All in all, I can't wait for the coverage to start.

Pace of Play: Starting in 2006 the Board of Governors has emphasized the elimination of slow play. Please be prepared to
play in 4 hours or less. Be prepared to play at all times. Always carry an extra ball. Be ready to hit when it is your turn
and feel free to play ready golf. Always rake your own fairway bunker and replace your own divot. Repair ball marks and
prepare to putt while others are playing their ball

I read there are one or two par fours that could be driveable depending on where they have the tees, that tends to lead to pretty bad bottlenecks.

I think one is the 10th - players playing the back 9 first will actually be teeing off on the 11th to minimise delays.

it gives the shorter hitters a better chance but long hitters who are good iron players and putters will also have a big chance as they will be able to hit irons instead of fairway woods off a good few the tees.

Think Snedeker is on the cusp of winning a major. Some really good showings over the past few years with 4 top 10s since 2010. Didn't play this last year due to injury so should be hungry for it.

I certainly wouldn't be backing him now .. he's injured. rib injury.

Is he confirmed out? He has that problem that keeps making his ribs fracture or break but didn't know he was going to be a no-show again.

Yeah, knew I hadn't seen anything about him pulling out. You make a fair point, though. Really like him as a golfer, though, and he fits the bill for this course. Great putter, short off the tees (relatively) and good with GIR and FIR. If he can stay fit I can see him going deep. Really is unfortunate with that bizarre bone condition.

I think the weather is going to make this week into a bit of a lottery. A short, soft course means low scores which suggests that anyone with a hot putter can have a shot at it.

Bearing that in mind its easy to see a middle of the road Yank could well take it out, someone like Scott Stallings or Billy Horschel who are red hot form. Kuchar is having a great year as well and one would think that if Stricker is ever going to win a major, this is the one.

Of the Europeans, McDowell and Mannasero are the two obvious form players. Given GMac has had a win and a second in his last 3 US Opens he seems suited to how the courses usually set up, although if the scoring is low that wouldn't suit him. Sergio is the other one to look out for, his putting is in decent shape at the moment although his mental fortitude is always the big issue.

Of the usual suspects after that, we know what McIlroy can do on a courses with receptive greens although its difficult to see him putting it all together this week. I think he may contend but won't win. Mickelson showed good form last week and if he holes a few putts could contend. Its hard to know whether Scott can back up his Masters wins, given he's basically a part time tournament golfer at the moment. Tiger is Tiger, although his strange performance at Memorial raises a few question marks.

So of the big guns I'd probably rank it:

    1. Tiger
    2. McDowell
    3. Kuchar
    4. Sergio
    5. Mickelson

But I think given the way the course is set up and the weather forecasted I'd take the field over the above 5.

Merion is a ten minute walk from my house. There is a great buzz in the area but traffic is a nightmare already. I was over there on Saturday and despite the all the rain on Friday it looked fantastic........It rained in buckets again yesterday and the forecast does not look great with on and off rain until Thursday. It would be a pity if it were not able to dry out properly as soft greens will make the course relatively "easy" and very un-open like!!.

Is there complementary entry for locals to compensate you for some of the disruption or any perks to living close by? Have you ever played the course or what's the situation regarding membership, closed shop? It's claimed as a short course but at nearly 7,000 yards with a nice mix of long and short hole doesn't look like the big hitters will get away with only hitting irons from the tees. Should be a good test of golf and course management and an exciting weekend ahead.

No compensation where I am but I'm sure some of the houses immediately adjacent to the course are making a mint. The USGA completely took over their front gardens and are using them for VIP tents(picture attached). Parking on our road is restricted to residents only which is good but as I said traffic is brutal but it is a small price to pay to have it here. Can't wait.

What happens if a ball gets stuck in a wicker basket one might ask????

Well the answer is if it happens you must place your ball directly below the basket.
Not in the hole but on the lip of the hole.
