Why is engine oil sooo expensive?

Brother just had a servive done on his 1.6 diesel engine, and the 4.5L of specialist engine oil cost €190

    Is that normal?

Another thing that strikes me is that his "service" consisted of an oil change & a filter, and that was it!

Maybe that's all that's required for a diesel service?

    What oil is that!?

Who makes it? What's the specs? Is it racing oil?

Some gearbox oils are £60 a litre and I'm sure that's a mickey mouse effort compared to some other oils out there so I'm not all surprised tbh

Quite high for a service though

Knowing that we are talking about 1.6 diesel and that some company was doing the service I think we can cross out high performance race car oil! :Pac:

Sorry, I forgot to mention that they changed the oil/air filters too, which equals 'a full service' according to FAST FIT.

€190 for the service or for the oil itself?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 451 ✭✭TGi666

don't even this the top secret fusion R oil goes for that much, and that's designed for big BHP cars

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,454 ✭✭✭mloc123

So.... 190e for oil, filters and labour? Not crazy money anyway.

    Labour: 1hr@60e
    Filters: 40e-50e?
    Oil: 50e-60e?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

Depends where you go, some place will charge >200 euro for a "full" service.
Many customers are too lazy to shop around and clueless about what should be done and how much it would really only cost if they'd DIY it.
This is why those places are still in operation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,404 ✭✭✭corkgsxr

For the 1.6 hdi its about 60 for the oil.

Bought 10l of Mobil 1 New life for 90 quid a month or so back and that was 0-40w

Can't see a 1.6 Hdi needing even half that even if a similar grade

€50 for an oil filter? Having a laugh?

Doubt it would include a fuel filter, they can be pricey AFAIK. Oil and air filter should be no more than €30.

Oil and air filter should be no more than €15 all in really, oil would be about €50-60. Fuel filter would be €20 tops!
    €95!

I always find it amazing how people can make such definite statements on parts and servicing prices when they don't even know the make and model of the car in question!

    It's a diesel car and the 1.6 model :D

I dunno why people go into these places to get their car serviced without finding out how much it's roughly gonna cost and then come onto boards to give out when they get their bill.

The fuel filter for the 1.6hdi is about 60 euro

Yes but even that doesn't mean you can know how much parts cost. They can vary massively from model to model.

One member above says you should get a fuel filter for €20 tops. Just threw it out there as if it was a fact. No info as to what car we are talking about, just posted it up there regardless.

As another poster above pointed out above you can not buy a fuel filter for a 1.6D Focus for €20. You can double that and add VAT at least for the metal type that is commonly fitted to them. Even the cheaper plastic type won't be bought for under €30.

If it was the Peugeot 1.6 hdi engine then I would say.
    Fully syn oil €60
    Oil filter €12
    diesel filter €45
    air filter €15
    pollen filter €20
    €152
    Labour €38
    Total €190
    _______________
If it was a focus/Volvo s40 1.6 diesel then add another €40 for the fuel filter.
The garage would then owe you €2 for doing the service...

    Yep, thats it^

Rang the brother earlier, and he has confirmed that it was not just the oil (specialised) to be changed,
but that it was for all of the above + the labour, hence the €190. Still sounds expensive to me though.

Its gonna be the 1.6 HDI engine anyway!

Stop saying the Oil was "specialised" unless it was something very specific and not just modern diesel grade fully synth (which given they are the majority motor now, the opposite of anything specialist)!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,078 ✭✭✭✭LordSutch

Says oil type 'specialist' on the FAST FIT receipt, but maybe that's their own oil catagory/catalogue type for a 1.6 HDi diesel engine?

Funny that, the air filter for my car alone is about 20e...

The next service should only consist of Fully syn oil and filter...:)
The fuel filter should last around 40-50k but with the unknown quality diesel out there I would change it sooner.
Note the service intervals on the 1.6 hdi engines have gone back to 15 k kms not the 20k kms that maybe displayed on his instrument cluster.

This new service interval was introduced by psa due to the large amount of turbos/engines failing on the dv6 engine....tbh once they are serviced within the 15 k km intervals and the correct oil used then there shouldn't be problem...:)

So it was a full service and not just oil.....

are you serious you think thats expensive for all that ???????

what is it about people these days that they want everything for nothing

About right that kind of job for a mid-size diesel these days, I should say. 190 Euro for oil - Jaysis, I wouldn't pay that for Jaguar ATF! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,104 ✭✭✭dieselbug

Sure arent all garage owners, mechanics millionaires when they reach their mid 30's. €60 - €100 per hr straight into the pocket and working all hours.
You cant trust any of them, charging for parts they dont fit, wiping off filters with a rag etc. Removing good parts and selling them to the next customer etc etc. (tounge firmly stuck in cheek)

Seriously, yes there is the odd cowboy but most just want to do a good job and give value for money. Build a good reputation and gain a loyal customer base. Unfortunately the customer dosent always see it this way and cant understand, for example why their engine oil may cost €60 -€80 when theres a 5l container down at the supermarket for €18.50. (suitable for a Ford Escort, maybe)

Communication on both sides is key to avoiding situations where someone may suspect they are being ripped off when in fact the garage is only trying to do the work properly and acting in everyones best interest. Ie be clear about what work needs to be done and an estimate of what it will cost. On the garage mechanics side, dont fit any extras without consulting the customer first and getting approval.

And last but not least, dont jump to conclusions without knowing the facts.

Sorry if this comes across as a rant, was'nt meant to.

I'm curious to know why you think it is expensive? Where are you comparing the price to? I'm no fan of getting a car serviced from these tyre centre chains but the price seems about right to me for what was done.

It's kinda pricy alright. Got the C5 done at a local citroen specialist and it definitely wasn't 190 euro. I'll look for the receipt. Though, that's the price you pay for going to fast fit or similar place...

The oil and air filter was not more than 20 euros for the two as far as I remember. The air filter is only a tenner online anyways..

Just realised you are talking about Fast Fit ().. next time find a independent mechanic who doesnt hide the Oil used under made up "specialist" labels and offers better pricing (or at least explanation of pricing).

Mobil and Castrol might produce specialist Oils for certain jobs... your local Fast Fit, not so much. Its basic concealment.

They see the ads for "full service from €99" and think that's the price of a service. Not knowing that it isn't a full service and only for a very few select cars that can use any old oil you want to throw into it.

It's not as if an oil and filter change is a magic art, most people can do it themselves if they don't mind getting a little bit of dirt on their clothes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,313 ✭✭✭Mycroft H

    Just checked the receipt there

    130 euro all in for a C5 1.6hdi 110.

    Including ACEA C2 5W-40 Fully Synth (40)
Oil/Air/Fuel filters (8.50 each for the Air/Oil and 36 euros for the fuel)
    Labour 40

130 euros all in. Decent bit less than 190.

"Specialised oil" may be a reference to low ash spec for dpf.

The Avensis 2011 Mobil oil on its own is €138 from a local motor factors, its not insane but you should shop around. The cheap stuff is €70 but remember oil is the blood of an engine. Cheap **** shortens the service life span.
