Hugely looking forward to this.. looks great!

The first seasons of Wedds were excellent, so hoping for more of the same.

Netflix truly are making some damn fine series as of late... oh, and Hemlock Grove! :D

This is available from today and is getting some cracking reviews.
... this is the most impressive group of female characters ever assembled in a series, and it's not just window-dressing; each woman has a story and that story will be told. Netflix may wind up changing the world after all.
... In every case, there is an abiding feeling for character and authenticity that helps elevate Orange Is the New Black to a new definition of television excellence.
... "Orange" is one of the best new programs of the year, and the six episodes I've seen have left me hungry to see more. … It is mind-boggling that so many disparate things hang together so well in "Orange," which manages to be both subversive and serious, sweet and viciously barbed.

Since it is a watch-on-demand show, people will watch at their own pace. Please use spoiler tags when discussing important plot points, twists etc.

Hopefully it will manage to keep up the high standard unlike Weeds which started well but quickly turned into a farce.

Watched the first episode last night, off to a great start - looking forward to seeing the rest. Not thrilled with the selection on Netflix Ireland so far, so these original series are a dealbreaker for my continued subscription ;-)

Watched the first two episodes and I like it. Very entertaining and the female protagonist is a babe

Haha, Jason Biggs sure must be sick of

Five episodes in and I'm loving it. Such great female characters and it's surprisingly emotive for a dramady

I am absolutely hooked on this show.

Haven't been this excited about a new show in ages.

Really love all the characters story lines.

9 episodes in and i'm loving it. so brilliantly written..reminds me of weeds alot of ways

Only seen the first 2 episodes, but it's brilliant...

The female answer to OZ, with 30% more comedy.

And less brutality. There is just the right level of menace, so it feels like prison, but if it was as bleak as some fictional prisons I couldn't watch a whole season of it. They mostly resolve their conflicts without violence. Even many of the most hostile characters have humanizing moments or backstories that are filled in as the season goes on.

I've never seen Oz, and I'm sure it's high quality, but I don't think I can deal with that atmosphere.

I hear they already have a second season on order. I hope it doesn't get to the point where they start contriving reasons to keep her in prison.

Watched the first episode. Aside from the lead being out of her comfort zone it didn't grab me, tbh.

Well I'm pretty sure she's going to be there for awhile. Looks to me like she murdered crazy meth head.

I'm not so sure. For one, I think she just put a wicked beat down on her... we'll probably see Pennsatucky next season with brand new teeth, just like she always wanted. Healy (douchebag that he is) can't rat out Chapman because then he'd have to explain why he didn't stop it.

btw for context, both of our spoilers are finale spoilers... so don't look unless you've finished the season.

I'm enjoying watching Captain Janeway being the worst TV chef in history.

She really piled on the pounds for the role. Fair play.

Watched the first 3 episodes today, really enjoying it so far, can't wait to watch more tomorrow, if only all shows were like Netflix original series and were all released together, I love binge watching.

Really enjoyed the series (hence being up so late) but Jesus that last scene...

It's really hit and miss, and quiet contrived in places, but I certainly enjoyed it and will watch the next season

Good series, ****e name. Looking forward to watching more of it.

Two episodes left to watch. So far the show has been excellent. Not what I expected at all.

I mass-watched this show in a shameful amount of time.

Really enjoyed it, the writing is so clever in parts. The scene where Pennsatucky (spoiler not major plot point)
wants to put up the giant cross, is denied and has to carry the cross away like Jesus on his way to be crucified
    cracked me up.

Did anyone else notice quiet kitchen lady
in the abortion clinic Pennsatucky attacked
? I wonder what she's in prison for.

The lead looks distractingly like Katy Perry. Even in the final episode, I couldn't stop thinking it.

it's quite good. Not amazing but i enjoy it.
Really makes you think how much better womens prisons are to mens :p

Ya, while I enjoyed it I'd hugely recommend not going into it with Oz on your mind

    Hugely different shows

I met Kate Mulgrew briefly at last year's Destination Star Trek London and I thought her red hair and slighly bulkier frame looked very strange on her.

Was talking to her about it and she hinted that she was playing a new crazy Russian Character and did a bit of the accent for me for a second. Mentioned it was going to be on Netflix too.

That's pretty much the sole reason I decided to watch this when it premiered and I'm glad that I did - it's a fantastic show so far. The only episode I have yet to see is the finalé.

Can't wait to see what the climax of that particular conflict is.

So finally finished the series just now (and i've work at 7  ) and i really enjoyed it. I was afraid with a title like that it was going to be all girl power and Ugly Betty-esqu (and i haven't watched weeds), but i was very surprised. Hugely comedic from the start, and took a very serious and menacing turn towards the last few episodes. As far as i can tell, she's only been in prison a few months, possibly half her sentence, and i'd imagine
the beatdown at the end will get her an extended sentence
, but if not, going by the current pace the next season will bring her up to the end of her sentence.

    Anyway, great show!

I enjoyed this, the box read as if was going to be more of a one for the ladies, but its really thought provoking and makes you actually think about prision and those who inhabit them.

Yes, some genuinely good and well written LGBT characters as well. I thought it might just be a trashy Showtime ripoff but it works really well. I'm 5 eps in and already looking forward to the next season. Hopefully they don't leave it go on too long though.

Healy could just say he saw them together chatting or something though

Absolutely hooked on this. Watched all the episodes in under a week, loved it. Loved the thinly veiled reference to American Pie in the first episode :D:D This is based on a memoir but I'm presuming what happens in the last episode didn't happen in the memoir?

I'm about eight episodes in, really enjoying it. Great characters and well written. Love the opening theme by Regina Spektor too.

I was looking for something to watch after my Sopranos binge re-watch. This stands up to that masterpiece nicely which is the best compliment I could give any show. Like others, I just hope this doesn't spiral out of control quality wise like Weeds did.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,085 ✭✭✭meoklmrk91

Just about to watch the last episode, for the first few episodes I liked a lot, but over the last few episodes I come to the realisation that its actually something very special, this is a show filled with strong female characters with rich back stories, I don't think there has been anything like this before, it's very compelling to watch.

Yeah, I was trying to think of a way to say that without sounding ridiculous but it is so refreshing to see lots of female characters, black women, old women, butch women, lesbian women in a show. I also can't think of another show I've seen that's used a transgender actress.

None of it seems gratuitous, they're all real people. It's great.

As a woman I think it's really cool to see women on TV in this way, usually it's a male lead with some males, and a lot of the time they feel like almost like an afterthought and are somewhat one dimensional. These are multifaceted, interesting female characters, these are actually, regardless of sex, some of the most interesting characters I've seen on a show in a very long time.

She really piled on the pounds for the role. Fair play.

To be honest, I don't think the weight gain was intentional for this role in particular. The moment Voyager ended, she slowly started to gain weight. It happens to a lot of actors when the regular work ends. If you work 15 or 16 hour days for seven years.....the moment it ends its hard to stay in shape.

I remember seeing her in an interview about five years back and she looked quite chunky in that.

    Season 2 spoiler
Pennsatucky has been upgraded to series regular so we can presume she's not too badly injured by Piper's attack

Just after watching the whole series, I really enjoyed it. I found so many of the characters compelling and am already itching for season 2.
