The old "Women and Weights" question

I did a search but couldn't really find what I was looking for.

I do a lot of cardio. I also have done the Jillian Michaels DVDs with 5kg weights at home. I always thought this was "resistance training" but I have recently learnt the word "plyometrics" and I think that covers it.

Basically I really want to work on my strength. I want to be able to walk into the free weights area and lift up some heavy weights. I need some sort of structure though. I got a free induction when I joined the gym and they designed a program for me but it was mostly cardio and machines. So I am reluctant to ask them for another one.

I want to do deadlifts and squats with weights etc... Is there anywhere on the net that would detail how to begin?

Failing that I will have to pay a PT to give me some ideas but none of the trainers in my gym are particularly ripped, if you know what I mean.

You really would be better going to a reputable PT/S&C/weight lifting coach who (or whatever fancy name) can check your mobility, stability & teach you proper form! You wont regret it! Where are you based & someone should be able to recommend someone!?

This. A few hours with a proper trainer and you'll see the benefits all through your training career.

I'm based in Dublin 2/4. You are right. I would be hesitant to look up my local trainer. If anybody has any recommendations, it would be greatly appreciated!

The Irish Strength Institute http://www.isipersonaltraining.com/ have a gym in Hatch Street in Dublin 2. I use them and they're very good, they have a female personal trainer on the premises too.

I go here.... http://www.southdublinsc.ie/ , it's in Harolds Cross and the trainer is excellent. Very knowledgeable in all areas and can tailor workouts/Diet to your specific goals.

I would have been a regular gym member for years, generally going 3-4 times a week. I joined South Dublin SC last month and its the best decision I have ever made fitness wise. Highly recommended.

    http://www.crossfit.ie/

Lots of women train down here and move signicant amounts of weight! If you want to swing a barbell around I'd strongly recommend it.

Funnily enough I was in San Diego a few months ago and met a guy who worked there and sold it to me and promised I would call in when back in Dublin but then got drunk and made a show of myself so didn't call in!

What is the problem/divide around Crossfit? I see all the memes but don't know enough about it to have an opinion.

There's a lot of crap crossfit's with poor coaching standards. CFi, the one linked, is Ireland's longest established, best equipped and probably one of the best, coached set ups.

My GF trains there and she moves well, is crazy strong and doesn't look big or bulky. The guys that own it are good friends of mine too and have really built a special gym and community.

It does sound good to me but to be honest the prices just don't suit me! I'm more looking for a once/twice-off induction/program so I can go and do my own thing in the gym when it suits me (early mornings are my forte). I would probably be looking for a review then every few weeks.

Yeah that's fair enough - it definitely costs a few quid relatively speaking.
