The car has given the individual unprecedented abilities to travel heretofore unknown. The ability to get individuals, personal luggage and goods from any one place to any other far outweights the "damage" to society in general.

Historically certainly, but I reckon we are nearing the point where the benefits are no longer as great as the drawbacks due to the sheer numbers of private cars and their levels of material and fuel consumption and pollution output and usage patterns.
Of course nothing is going to radically change any time soon, even things like dropping the kids to school or driving 3 mins to the shops instead of walking are so commonplace these days and do a lot of damage long term. There is nothing wrong with using a car as such, it excessive use and excessive infrastructure that causes the problems (worldwide, never mind Ireland)

The road space picture is a very simple but effective demonstrator of one the problems

Our road tax and VRT systems are almost totally unprecedented in their severity.
Not really, other countries have VRT (Denmark for example - 105% tax rate).
