Pen of Choice?

Personally I'm a big fan of these:
    Bic_Orange_fine_by_zmoodel.jpg
I considered writing my Poetry essay with one of those swanky blood quills from Potter to show my dedication and personal connection to Sylvia Plaths poetry, but I'm not a big fan of blood. Infact it makes me faint, not the best plan in English P2.

And I do all my maths with these:

So LCerts 2013, on the eve of English Paper 1, what is your writing utensil of choice?

I knew the pen thread would pop up sooner or later!

I still need to check my pen stocks but I'm usually a standard Stadtler (or however you spell it!) kind of person. There's just something about their colour that I love. When I run out of those though I'll probably be back to the standard trusty Bic. :(

I use the staedtler pen aswell :)

Find the papermate ones really good!

Btw for the maths papers are people using pen or dark pencil?! I'm thinking pen but I'm not sure due to the lack of space if you get it wrong, I know theirs space at the back but I'm convienced they wont check it or something :L

I used to always to maths in pen, but with those stupid boxes, I have to use pencil to try keep it neater.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,849 ✭✭✭bluejay14

Much as it kills me because of the amount of mistakes I make I always go with pen for maths. I always find it really hard to see pencil because my numbers are too big to fit a number per box so when they go outside a box each it gets hard to tell what the numbers are with the numbers themselves and then the lines for the boxes. :L

I'm planning on doing as much rough work as possible in an answer booklet, to try keep everything clear.

    rant:
Who's fecking idea was it to make us write in squares? I haven't used a square copy since 5th class! And 10x10mm is too bloody small!

I'm using stadelter and a Schneider pen, they are pure easy to write quick with.

Went frantic this morning looking for a stadelter pen bought 5 blacks and 5 blues cause I had a dream I ran out of my pen during english paper two and the only alternative was a tesco value pen in the other colour and I couldn't bear use it so I had to leave the exam. >.<

Parker fountain pen, only one heavy enough to make my writing even halfway readable. :P

Those tesco pens, the grey and blue/red/black ones are pretty nice, I must have about 40 of them by now. I have a fancy parker pen I was given as a gift too, but it'll probably get nicked/lost. I also have one of those Fixation erasable pens for Accounting and Maths. Handy stuff.

Well seeing as you all use plain biros, Bics and Staedtlers..this is gonna be kinda weird but I use cartridge fountain pens :) Went through a scores of pens until I finally settled on these.

    P6140374.JPG

Usually not in purple though..usually :p

    Fineliners are my second choice

    943258.jpg

I like the felt tip feel more than the fountain pen but I had a few accidents with the fineliners(ruined 2 shirts :o) so I mostly ditched them although I could have just stopped putting them in my pocket..open.

I agree 100%. Those tiny boxes are ridiculous and really off-putting, so much so that I did my summer test in an answer booklet rather than using the boxes provided (I've just finished 5th year). If you're going to force the use of squares, at least make them those light blue ones that were in those primary school maths copies.

Regarding pens, I've always used these Faber Castells since my Junior Cert mocks. I find lots of pens too dry, but these ones aren't trying to conserve their ink. Most importantly, I've never had one run out before all the ink was actually gone.

Great choice with the fountain pen. The only thing I'd be afraid of is not bringing a spare cartridge in with me.

I have a Lamy Safari at the moment and it is so smooth to write with. Just glides over the paper. Can't go back to ballpoints after it.

Ooh they look good. Might invest in one of those, can you get them in easons?

Yeah the cartridge thing is an issue but I usually get like 3-4 school days on a cartridge and I can keep a spare one inside the pen itself so it's not as worrying at the moment. I'm only in 5th year, I'll be bringing in a reserve cartridge case or something next year, just to be sure :)

Don't think they're in Easons. They are in that pen shop near Trinity. I ordered mine from Amazon.

You should get the ink from Amazon. Look around and you'll find some great 4 for the price of 1 deals.

Gotta love me old reliable ball point blue :D

I have to admit I hate Supreme biros though, theyre too tough and I find they slow me down :o They're great for making my writing look neat however. Bic are ok IMO, but they're not the best that's out there, they're grand for most subjects, bar the ones where you are SUPER stuck for time: English and Business, I'm looking at you

I hate writing in black, only if I'm desperate, seriously I could have 5 black pens and none blue and ill ask my whole table do they have a blue pen before I start with the black, it's grand though cause most people seem to dislike writing in blue :D

I hate black too, it somehow makes my illegible scrawl even harder to read. Blue all the way, that is until I run out of blue.

DAMN, so I can't steal a blue pen off of you :P

Ah no, black pen makes my writing look even more disgusting, the amount of times my ENGLISH teacher told me to change my writing, and that was with the blue

    Quit hating on black :)

I use both. I think blue is better when writing on a page with black print on it because it contrasts it. Like in the LC maths papers or on a French paper. But I think black is better for writing in a copy/exam booklet or anything formal(like in English) because it just looks more significant.

God help my corrector. I was reading over some of my essays earlier and there were parts of my writing that stumped me.

But back to the pen situation, I never bought any pens so I only have the 1 Staedtler :(, a bic and 2 black Faber Castelles

Not when it makes your writing look more scrawny than it already does

    BLUE FTW

McHale ones that you get at the ploughing or farmers journal ones, but I change the ink in them to blue because I hate black writing!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,428 ✭✭✭Talib Fiasco

I used black Staedtler all throughout fifth and sixth year due to 'acquiring' a box of them at the UL open day and loved them. Still use them now occasionally (due to the box not being finished yet). But I did my Leaving Cert in plain blue and red BIC pens.... They seem to be the only pens I'm totally comfortable with and are comfortable with my writing speed. Have to use them in college exams as well.

Still though, I'd do an exam in any pen if I had to as long as it's span new. I can never start a set of exams with already used pens. I don't mind using a pen again in an exam as long as the pen was first used in the existing period of exams. Yeah OCD is rampant in this one  I also can't do an exam without having those rubber cylinder things that prevent your finger from getting mashed. I still have a bump on my middle finger that formed in primary school due to my aggressive writing technique (I f*cking love colouring :D) and anytime I need to write furiously it hurts like hell...so I don't have any other option really.

are you allowed use red pens in the exam ? I wasn't sure so iused black for question numbers today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,158 ✭✭✭✭HugsiePie

I nearly had a panic today in my exam, two of my blue pens ran out, and I nearly had to resort to black! Thank goodness I had picked up a third blue this morning as a complete fluke! :)

I used red for like headings and numbering questions and stuff. Never knew it wasn't allowed? I know you can't use it as your main colour for writing your answers but I'm sure as long as you stay well clear of the right column it's fine? Maybe the rules have changed since last year....but I didn't suffer in any way from using red anyway thats for sure :P
