What are you training for?

I was thinking today while I was sorting out my macro's about what I'm actually training for and couldn't really come up with a solution. I was always using the gym as an accessory to cycling but I've faded out of cycling in the past year and tbh stopped enjoying it. That lead too 'what am I training for now?'. I'd love to direct my training in a direction like most of the logs here and in the Strength & Sports Strength forum.

I have an interest in powerlifting, weightlifting as of late, but mostly bodybuilding. I'm unsure if I could ever get into bodybuilding 'shape' for say but I do intend to look along bodybuilding parameters training wise.

So, what, why are you training?

I get asked this the whole time when people see me breaking out the tupperware lunches in work.

My cheesy but truthful answer is to be the best I can be. That could take the form of 100kg 8% bf or it could be a 200kg squat, Ive no idea. All I know is for the foreseeable, I'll remain proud of what I've achieved but not satisfied. Theres always room for improvement

Also its genuinely a form of therapy for me at this stage!!

To be a better version of me.
I believe that to be successful, you need to try and achieve in all areas of your life and by achieving in one area, it transfers to the others.
Also cos I like lifting heavy things and there is nothing like the way you feel after a monster gym session.

To have a sh!t hot body.

I'm in constant competition with myself as well so to lift something I thought was impossible last week/month/year it's a great feeling for me.

I don't have any specific goals in terms of PL or BB etc. I lift to get strong, look good, feel good, be healthy, hit a golf ball as far as I can and to experiment with my body to see what it can do.
Enjoy your body. Use it every way you can. Don't be afraid of it or of what other people think of it. It's the greatest instrument you'll ever own.

Now when I started lifting weights things were different - i just wanted to get "big". That was ten years ago and I had been thinking about getting into it for a while. The push that I needed was when a work colleague who was about 9 stone himself said I was as "skinny as a rake"

Was always rugby for me. Getting bigger/faster/stronger coz everyone else is and you'll get left behind if you don't!

Moving abroad now though and not too pushed on getting straight back in to it so until I find another rugger team I'll concentrate more so on the beach weights...for the summer at least!

Used to be for strength. Now It's for a decent marathon time. Then it'll be for a balance, that is for being able to run a half marathon any weekend but also being reasonably strong for my bodyweight. PS I lost 10 kilo of muscle for the marathon training!

I train to defy my age. To paraphrase Dylan Thomas, I will not go gentle into middle age spread. I also train because it makes me feel good, and because there's always a new aim to reach for. Its like a project to see how good I can get.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,127 ✭✭✭✭kerry4sam

I train so I can excel in another aspect of my life. I train so I can be the best that I can be. I train to improve my general well-being; fitness levels; health and happiness.
This is just sounding pure selfish now reading that back, but it is the truth :o

Training is Personal to me; Training is Enjoyable for me; Training is a Massive Release for me!

That is what I am training for,

I'm training for the sole purpose of getting fit and healthy. A few years ago I was in great shape and looked great (if I do say so myself lol) but then went on holiday and it all went downhill from there. I decided just under 2 moths ago that enough was enough and being 17.5 stone was ridiculous... so (with the help of my brother who is a personal trainer [handy eh? lol] ) i completely turned my diet around and have been in the gym every day for the last 6 and a half weeks, mainly weight training but with plenty of cardio thrown in also. This is my result to date.... the before shot was taken on April 17th and the after shot on May 29th. Weight is now at an even 15 stone. Target is 14 stone and then its on to phase 2... Bulk time :)
