You don't 'lose' calories, you burn calories.

There is no way for anyone to accurately estimate how many calories you burned.

If you want to know how many calories you burn buy yourself a heart rate monitor.

I don't think you burn off that much extra calories while walking. The main reason why people get introduced to it if they are overweight is to ease them into cardio with a regular routine that isn't intensive in an uncontrolled/unsupervised environment.

I think you are looking at it slightly the wrong way around. You said you cut out daily chocolate and spread one large bar over the weekend. But these themselves aren't quantifiable items. Calories per bar can range from 100 - 400, depending on what you're selecting. If you want to take note of the difference in your diet, best bet is to pick up the bar and look at the back of the wrapper.

My fitness pal is a handy app for calorie counting, you put in what you consumed that day and what exercise you did and it shows how many calories are still in your system at the end of the day. It's a cool little thing and as it has a calendar so you could roughly work out how many kcals you burnt. I think it's free but I can't remember, do a google search for the web version if you want! :D

Are you using the App or online? I don't find the app bad, a little basic regarding exercise but decent enough :D

I always leave it til just before I go to bed to add my exercise calories to the MFP app and when I do I always under-estimate just because I know that the app isn't the most accurate!

If you compare the estimates on MFP for 1 hour of running/cycling against calories recorded on a Garmin or other watch with a heart rate monitor it can be out by hundreds of calories over or under.

It has no way of knowing how hilly, hot or windy your route was, how heavy your bike is or many other variables.

I did not know that, I shall crawl away with shame. :p hahaha I apologise for recommending it! :D

The app itself is awesome. But the calorie estimates are just that, estimates.

I use a garmin on a bike and in a boat and polar in gym and on erg. While they both use HR to estimate cals burned, they're both slightly on the higher side I think.

Doesn't bother me, I just eat everything anyway.

No shame, they just don't have enough data to do those kind of calculations. If you use strava or similar app it will at least track your pace and the amount of climbing on a route, then just overwrite the calories the MFP calculates with their estimates. If you get sucked into the competitive world of Strava this will also help with weight-loss.

HRM watches can be gotten relatively cheaply now. This one has 4 stars and is under €16: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pulse-Sonic-K920D-Heart-Monitor/dp/B005560PU4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1369662074&sr=8-1&keywords=hrm+watch

I'm not familiar with that brand myself but the reviews are pretty positive.

That Strava looks pretty cool, I presume there's no way that watch could sync with the app though is there? Would it not be handier to get a cheap Bluetooth sensor rather than the watch? [Obviously I'm asking this for the thread starter not myself ;) Hahaha]

Good point! Strava don't support bluetooth HR straps on android but they do support HxM http://blog.strava.com/bluetooth-heart-rate-support-premium-features-now-available-for-strava-cycling-and-strava-run-for-android-5228/

Looks like endomondo support Bluetooth: https://getsatisfaction.com/endomondo/topics/how_do_i_setup_my_bluetooth_heart_rate_device_polar_or_zephyr_with_my_phone

If your goal is to lose weight then yeh it would be pretty handy to have a scales. Or a measuring tape.
