Sky are having a promo at the mo offering 3 months subscription to NowTV for £1 a month (From the already "Discounted" price of £8.99).

I signed up myself today. While the calibre of films is quite good (more "Blockbusters" on offer than Netflix), the service is far from the ease-of-use Netflix offers. Expect a few bugs and longish loading times. There is also an iPad/iPhone/Android App, however not available in the Irish iTunes/Play Store. You'll have to get access the appropriate UK stores. From what I've tried, the iPad App works better than the online experience, which isn't saying much. It also lacks the vast catalogue of content that Netflix offers, but there are some gems in there like the whole Bond collection of films.

All in all, by no means a Netflix killer, or even a worthy alternative. But for the sake of a quid, it's worth putting on top of your Netflix subscription. You also get access to the live streams of all the Sky Movie channels, and no VPNs are required to access any of the content.

Anywhoo, here's the link to the promo:

Also have a different promo, £2.50 a month for 6 months here:

I was able to access it no problem. They even allow you to choose Ireland as a billing address. They did announce about a month ago how it would launch in Ireland soon, but never specified a date. All content plays fine (well to a degree, the site is still buggy, a known problem going by their forum), no VPNs or workaround a needed.

Probably an obvious question but do you need to be an existing Sky subscriber to get this?

From first line of the ad, in the OP LINK.....

Haha....well I certainly hope you are not relying on Sky's own Broadband to power this product !!!!!
Thanks to Sky I have been left with NO broadband whatsoever. Back in January I left UTVConnect and joined Sky-the WORST decision I ever made.
At its best I was getting speeds of about 4MB and in the last 3 weeks.....nothing!!!!!
They have been unable to resolve the issue and had no option but to release me from the contract.
I'm now waiting to get UPC.
My advice to anyone even remotely thinking about moving to them is dont.
I have no issues with their TV service-it's fine.
BTW I live in an estate in an urban area where there should be absolutly no speed or service issues. With my previous provider I had none so why now?....that's the question Sky cannot answer.

In fairness you can watch good quality films online for free and a lot sooner than on the Sky Library. Plus they want to charge a tenner sterling for 24 hours sky sports when there is any amount of streaming services that do it for free.

I have subscribed for the 3 months worth but it says I must download an app for using it on an iPad. This app seems to be only available in the UK and not available on the Irish apps store. Any ideas on how to get round this? Logged into the UK apps store but it says I can only buy from the Irish Apps store.

I had no hassle signing up, can't see the app on the xbox though - maybe that's UK only?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,593 ✭✭✭theteal

if you already have sky movies on demand through the Xbox, is there any benefit to this? are new releases shown sooner?

edit: i just had a quick look at the movie selection on the site, it's the exact same as the on demand section of the sky go app

Hi, that's what I was thinking, but when I go to create a new account in the UK, it asks me for my credit card details to complete the registration and I don't see any way of bypassing that. Any ideas?

I just signed up there but I can't find the app anywhere for the ps3. Any advice?

I know there used to be this loophole, where if you try to download a free App on the UK iTunes Store and when it asks you to login, click setup a new account. From there, you should be able to setup an account without any payment card. As already said, if you have an iPod/iPhone/iPad it's always handy to have a US/UK account for all the various Apps!

As for the Xbox NowTV App, it is UK-only too, and I don't think setting up a Uk Xbox Live account is as straight forward as setting up a UK iTunes account. Just to note that if you are a Sky Movies subscriber, NowTV will be of no real use to you. Sky Go has all the same content. Unless of course you are desperate to have the PS3 App.

So far it seems to work fine for me. Quality can be shocking to begin with, but let it buffer for a bit and its fine. Again though, it's no Netflix.

Whilst setting this up i came across this:

Sky TV apps hacked, all now removed from the Play Store

I am sure it is only a temporary issue.

And heres the other side of the coin, I got sky and bar 1 or 2 initial teething problems, couldnt be happier with my unlimited 24mb line and no download cap for 10e a month, down from 40e a month for a 3mb line from eircom.

As they dont have any engineers themselves they log a call with eircom, I started getting outages soon after moving to them, eircom called out, cabling problem, bit of jiggery pokery, all fixed. Problem was the line wasnt able to handle 24mb but I would have had that problem if Id moved to 24mb with eircom as well. All fixed now. highly recommend sky.

Id guess sky just put you at the highest bandwidth and your line just couldnt take it.

I have a slow connection - 2mb over which netflix runs flawlessly always been amazed how well it works, just signed up and the tv now stuff on the other hand looks like a 250mb divx from the early 00's, way to highly compressed. So if you have a slow connrection I don't think I'd bother even for a euro. Its totally sub par compared to iplayer, magnet, 4od, netflix.

    This a grand bargain.
Signed up last night and watched a couple of movies using a UK account on PS3 but I couldn't set up UK Apple account, wasn't able to get past the registration of my laser card.
Well worth a £1 a month. Thanks OP

The Sky applications were hacked last weekend, so they were pulled from the app stores. They're dealing with the situation and will reload them when they can. They advise customers to uninstall them for the time being.

Is it not €40 extra per month? I had been holding off because I thought thats what it was and i'm paying that anyway for UPC.

Edit: I see now. They say the broadband part is €10 but you still have to pay €30 for the phone I don't need etc.

Is it not €40 extra per month? I had been holding off because I thought thats what it was and i'm paying that anyway for UPC.

As I had sky already, when I signed up in january I think it was a first time offer to get the sky bb ball rolling. Anyone with sky was given it for 10e a month, AFAIR 17e a month if you werent with sky. Just checked and yes theyve upped it to 40e. I may see that increase too when my year is up.

even so, 40e for 24mb no cap is so much better than the limited eircom offer. they try and bundle things so you get something like 40e for 3mb line with some free calls to the moon every monday morning at 4am.

They just cant seem to grasp the concept of "I just want cheap, fast broadband with no call package please". I think Eircom are rolling out new fibre over the coming months but you need to sign up for 18 months plus 1. Its debatable that youre going to get 24mb anyway once contention sinks in and 2. If sky are doing 24mb for 40e at the very least you have no download cap with sky.

If youve got UPC I'd suggest sticking with it. I cant get UPC where I am so am restricted to broadband over phone line providors only.

that was the SEA that posted to take them down on twitter not SKY

    no need to uninstall them

+ they weren't really hacked (the apps), they got access to their developers account and changed the logo & description, that's all

you don't even need to get someone else's account, you can create a new one on the psn website, making sure to use UK address then add the new account to your ps3. theres a lot of instructions to do this online, its very easy. I have made a US account too to install apps from there.
