At lunch today when chatting aboue the new bike, one of the lads made a joke asking do I shave my legs now, which I don't.

Do any boardsie cyclists shave their legs for cycling ptrposes and if so, what is the reason behind it?

This thread isn't meant to take the p**s. Just curious.

I told my OH and I got a stern warning not to! :P

Ignore your other half. Her opinion in cycling matters is not important. Oh, and yes.

We all shave each others legs

Used to when I raced as a teen. Made me go faster! :D

    Loads here do, I don't.

Think it makes sense if you're racing/getting sports massage. Not sure it's really necessary for tourers, but if you wants to, do it!

Thought it was for when you fall and cut yourself, the hair and dirt won't cause an infection and it makes it easier to clean up. That's at least what I was told anyway.

That's what we used to say. Easier then admitting 'I want to look like the TDF riders in the magazines'... ;)

Or 'aerodynamics'?!? So, why weren't we shaving our heads too?

I do, when running and cycling, and putting those heat straps on your legs with hairs on them isn't nice when taken them off.

Oh right. Not my thing tbh. I like my hairy legs and it'd be too much maintenance to shave.

The aerodynamic thing is bollocks though. You do not go faster, all in your feckin head :p

It also denies pesky little flies and midges anything to hold onto and inflict a nasty little bite.

I just cover my legs in helmets and hi vis jackets instead.

Out of curiosity do cyclists only shave their legs up to the point of the shorts or what's the craic?

That's very personal! You'd have to know a cyclist pretty well to ask that...

Aside from all the other reasons to shave your legs......one main reason.....

It just looks better...!!! :-) (my opinion!!)

(And I'm a cycling wife of a cyclist!!!)

Ps. Big Mig has two idenitities for those of you who have dealt with the "him" version!!! LOL

Pure aesthetics! I think it looks bad to have hairy legs on the bike and it's one of the signs of a Fred ;-D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,085 ✭✭✭shaka

Wilkinson don't do industrial razors when they do I may consider shaving :) I'm way to hairy to even try that , don't think I could be arsed . None of the that matters anyway cos other half would kill me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,384 ✭✭✭DaveyDave

I'll never shave my legs, I like walking around with hairy legs in pride. It's almost uncool to be hairy as a young adult, for whatever stupid trendy reason that may be. There's also the question of where do you stop? Not to mention that's just so much maintenance. I don't even shave my face nevermind my legs :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 262 ✭✭elnino23

I was under the impression that the pros do it for hygiene only, they are doing so many miles that chaff is an issue in lycra with sweat all the time, if they shave the hair they reduce friction for chaff. The road rash is also actually a major reason like someone mentioned.

@ right off. So we've come full circle from men controlling what women do with their bodies to women controlling what men do with theirs? I'm guessing it just suits them that their partner says it.

if i had smoother legs than my oh, she wouldn't kill me. There are many other things she also wouldn't do to me. Therein lies a problem.

I do. It is mostly for the help of keeping hairs out of any cuts etc from a fall. My bro in law still has the marks from a fall, when he got hair into the wound and it took a long time to heel. I feel it is also cleaner and healthier.

Cheap disposable or old school safety. You'll destroy Mach 3 etc after one shave.

I was considering it recently. For the weight, could easily drop a couple of grams there...

I've just spent half an hour in the shower shaving mine - for the first time - and what a pain in the @rse it is! Nair or something similar might be better. I only went just past my tan line
My legs weren't particularly hairy, but it took ages and I'm still not convinced I did a decent job. Not going to tell the other half as I'm away until Sunday, and I'll see how long she takes to notice as she wasn't keen on the idea

I used to shave them but what a pain, it took ages and little nicks and cuts would sting for days so I tried Veet for men and it's just the job, Apply a decent coat and leave for 4 to 5 Min's and using the spatula thing they supply while showering rinse thoroughly, smooth as silk in 5 Min's. Read the instructions on the tube as this stuff is fairly strong. Keep it away from the "gentleman's bits" as apparently the accompanying pain is on a level never previously known to any human being.
