A few minutes ago via Twitter:
    Giro d'Italia ‏@giroditalia 20m
Due to adverse weather conditions and, in particular, snow on the stage route in its entirety, stage 19 has been cancelled. #giro

    Dammit :(

    From Cadel Evans:
    Cadel Evans ✔ @CadelOfficial

Snow still falling here at our Giro Hotel...and we are at 1000m lower altitude than the proposed climbs.... #giro #fullofsurprises

    From Cav:
    Mark Cavendish ‏@MarkCavendish 1h
I remember waking up excited to see snow. Then I became a cyclist. Now I wake up to snow & have to wait to see if I'm excited or not..
    :D

The rest of Danilos diLuca's cycling career looks to be cancelled too

    Scinto:
"He's mad, he's a cretino, he needs treatment. There's nothing else to say. We gave him a second chance and the sponsors put their faith in him and this is how he pays us back. It's crazy that a rider thinks they can get away with it like that."

So what happens now? Do they take a few days break and try to finish the Giro extending in to early next week

Or just skip the whole stage and move on?

    Skip and move on.

Has this ever happened before in a Grand Tour - If my memory serves I dont think it has at least in modern times

How the hell did diLuca think he'll get away with it? Puzzles the mind..

Lol at the Killer, about as much of a surprise as Gabrovski at last years Tour of Turkey!

Cav will be delighted. He was likely going to card 0 points today where as Cadel would have likely scored some given that he is going for GC.

Yep, this can only be a good thing from Cav's point of view.
I haven't heard anything about tomorrow's stage, but it's in the same area as today's was meant to be, so is very likely to suffer the same fate in my opinion.
The final stage on Sunday is a straight up sprinters finish, so it's most unlikely that Evans will overtake Cavendish in the points race there.

From the tweet machine this morning...

Gazzetta dello Sport reporting that Danilo Di Luca failed an out-of-competition test for EPO on April 29. Vini Fantini announced they'd signed him on April 26.

Scinto: 'I never wanted Di Luca. He's an idiot. He needs to get help.'

"Doping is a weakness, period. But it's disappeared from cycling and other sports" Danilo Di Luca interviewed by La Gazzetta on Wednesday

"I can give advice to young riders because cycling today is very different to the cycling of 10 or 15 years ago" - Danilo Di Luca, last week.

He's up there with Ricco as an lying waster.....

The system is just not working if someone like Di Luca can be caught again and again and yet still end up competing successfully in grand tours.

If holes this big exist in the net, there must be an awful lot of other fishies slipping through as well...

just wondering is Vincenzo Nibali definitely planning to ride the Tour de France?
as he is 33/1 in places seems massive since he is clearly better than last year and has not really been pushed in the Giro.

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,269 Mod ✭✭✭✭Chips Lovell

At the moment, no, he's not mean to be riding the Tour.

This is always my fear. We're getting our hopes up that the winners of the grand tours these days are clean...because they're a bit slower and they TELL us they're clean.
We've heard repeated denials somewhere before though, who was that again?

I wouldn't go that far. The sport is definitely cleaner but sadly I think we've a long way to go before we can have absolute confidence in professional cycling. In the meantime I'm almost relieved to see another big name being caught as it means the testing is working and that's the only thing that's going to root out the cheats.

The people being caught are mainly idiots like Di Luca and Gabrovski, who we all knew were positives waiting to happen based on their track records and their performances coming from nowhere, and after long layoffs.

It is certainly possible that some less stupid riders are being somewhat more subtle and slipping through the net. That said the blood passport does do its job and its only not in play for the likes of Gabrovski as his team was 3rd tier and exempt and Di Luca as he was "retired", hopefully it keeps the established pro's honest.

Not wanting to hi-jack the thread and I'm not disagreeing with your point but Contador and Schlek (spell) were caught recently too....

Di Luca's last post on his Twitter account was way back in December 2009, saying: "The Di Luca is innocent and I will clear my name."

That man is an absolute joke. His entire palmarès should be just thrown in the bin

Any chance we can keep this thread to talking about Giro d'Italia Stage 19 – May 24th - CANCELLED and not doping etc???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,830 ✭✭✭catweazle

Balls i put a few bob on Betancur to finish top 6, I was hopeful he would break Majka in the mountains - He seems to be a strong sprinter so looks like hopefully he might squeeze a time bonus on tomorrows stage which might be my best chance as I cant see Majka letting him go

Why he probably thought he wouldn't be caught:
The amount - 50 picograms - was 400 time smaller than a WADA accredited lab was required to be able to detect but, despite its minuscule concentration, the mere presence of the drug warranted a two-year ban.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,222 ✭✭✭✭Lumen

Someone needs to explain "half life" to these people. Or not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 289 ✭✭uphillonly

Secret Pro had mentioned the peloton knew about a forthcoming drug outing of a former GT winner but it was said to be for biological passport rather than failed test. Also the timing of the test and his article seems too tight.

    http://cyclingtips.com.au/2013/05/the-secret-pro-2/

Could be that that DiLuca's biological passport was showing anomalies (secret pro & peleton knew) and hence the extra out of completion testing. Hopefully this is the case and and we haven't got to endure another case to come.

Giro, 1989 , stage 16 to Santa Caterina di Valfurva. Pretty close to the route of today's stage.

That 50 picograms is the amount of Clenbuterol found in Contador's sample, not the amount of EPO found in DiLuca's one, no?

That article makes me think there was suspicion of DiLuca, so they sent a sample to Cologne, rather than a local lab...

Fup it anyway. Same last weekend. Waited all week looking forward to a couch suffer fest only to have the meat taken out of it. :(

Is a giro without mountain stages still a giro?

That may be the real benefit of the blood passport, it gives a hint and then they target for tighter testing. I would image the tighter testing is more expensive and therefore only called into play where other information suggests something 'not normal'.

Given they tested him almost immediately after he signed on for the team fair play I say. Job well done.

One question, why so long to announce?
