I am considering moving to Oranmore and am wondering what the internet service is like out there? It's a big deciding factor on whether to move there.

Fibre by December, there's also a wide range of wireless services available but fibre is the best bet I'd say. Currently I get 12 megs on a normal DSL line.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 701 ✭✭✭christina_x

i'm not very good at technology stuff... does that mean no UPC or eircom or anything??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,653 ✭✭✭yer man!

There is Eircom, they supply 12 megs broadband mostly and also 24 megs in some parts right now. They will be upgrading this to 70 megs between July and December. All the other service providers should also be supplying this speed if it's through the phone line. As far as i know UPC broadband isn't available but everything else is.

I've a Digiweb 30MB wireless line. Had their ADSL 12MB previously.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35 yanogore

Hi, I also have 30MB Digiweb and I say stay away, It can go so slow that even website won't open. I'm loosing net for last couple of days and there is no support at all, it will be a week tomorrow and no one even looked at my issue yet, I got email back from support saying to try to connect my pc through the cable, when I reported problem I've told them that I'm on the cable... they can't even read... I hope that eircom's fibre will come sooner than later, I'm switching to it the next day.

hmmm... not being having any issue... seems ok

Have you a clear line of sight? Any trees after growing which would be blocking you?

My router log is full of issues but they Won't check it. I doubt that trees are causing the problem, my antenna is quite high.

What are your signal levels on your modem? Specifically the SNR and upstream power?

Those logs record every single tiny little signal issue that could be experienced with the slightest bit of interferance.

The actual signal levels are key to seeing if there are issues so I would check those when you're at home.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35 yanogore

    Hi,

I'm not sure if I have access to the section where signal parameters are displayed, but I will check it.

The biggest problem with Digiweb is that it takes 3 days before anyone gets back to you. Since yesterday morning my case is elevated to 2nd level support, but there is no word from them yet.

Too bad there is no smart telecom or upc broadband in Oranmore, hopefully eircom coming with fibre will encourage bit of competition on our not so small anymore market.

I think it's so unfair that we are paying for 30megs and never see it, even when there are no problems with net. Some time ago I was talking to them about it as I think I should be only be charged for 20megs package, but they think that I'm getting at the best over 30% less than what I pay for is ok as the package it's up to 30megs. I'm pretty sure that what they do is not ok. Some time ago I was participating in UE program ran by Samknows and I'm pretty sure that at some stage they will be fined for what they do.

That was lucky I was able to run the tests at all as most of the time it will fail before it's complete, usually upload will timeout.

unfortunately its always going to be "up to" not "guaranteed" a certain speed.

I've had a couple of providers but have been with digiweb the last number of years as their cap/price/speed/reliability is much better than the alternatives available to me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35 yanogore

I understand that it can't be guaranteed really but from up to 30 I would expect 29, 28 or even 27 which would be 10% less than the max, but not over 30% or in my case recently 90% less what I pay for.

Out of the different ISP's Digiweb is the worst so far I have experienced, even if I wouldn't take the recent events into account. Ever since I got them I often loose internet or it gets slow or some websites won't open one day and they work fine the other day. I'm 100% positive it's digiweb's issues as on my phone trough mobile data all works fine.

I would pursue Digiweb Tech Support for a resolution to this. Gather as much info as you can manage. They normally ask you to test directly connected to their modem and then run tests.

Run a constant ping overnight to google to show up packet loss, run speed tests off the galway server only at various times of the day to give an overall picture. If you're getting 30Mb by day but 2Mb in the evenings then it's like contention. If you're getting poor speeds at all times then it helps identify an issue.

If you're not getting a response via email use their chat feature or give them a call. If you're experiencing disconnections/packet loss then it should be easily identified. Just make sure you're doing the testing the way they ask you to - otherwise they won't trust the results.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35 yanogore

Yes I know all this, the only reason I haven't ate them yet is that I'm at home quite late and don't have much time in the evenings to use internet and to test the issue through. I think that my contract is up in a month or two and I only hope that eircom will be here already, even if not I might sign up with them and to get upgrade when they turn fibre on.

I think also that thomson router from digiweb is quite basic and not performing that well. I was planning to replace it but I find it difficult to find right router as most of the routers are described incorrectly as a cable router when they are just wireless routers to be connected with Ethernet cable not coaxial one.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 18,115 ✭✭✭✭ShiverinEskimo

You can't replace it as the service will only work with the modem you've been issued. Your account is tied to that unit. They will replace it if they think it's causing issues.

Like I said above - give them a call (open saturdays too) and get to the bottom of it.

As far as I know I could provide them with new mac address or clone the old one to the new device and it should work, unless there is some additional authentication but I doubt it.

Yea if you cloned the MAC it could work. I wouldn't spend any money on a new cable modem until troubleshooting was exhausted tho.

I think we've got a little bit of the topic ;)

eFibre is now in Oranmore. 50MB and 70MB options available. Not everywhere in Oranmore, but getting there

Digiweb can offer it too if Eircom can. Speak to them before you jump ship. Might give you an incentive to stick with them.

Well i might but they have download limits and with 3ppl at home on netflix, hulu, spotify, yt + downloading games from ps+ and xbl 100 gigs is like nothing.

What parts of oranmore have efibre? is it the maree side of the village, or the galway side?

Both sides, you can see the new green eircom exchanges in some of the estates.

I rang them about that before signing up with eircom, its more expensive per month, has an installation/setup fee and a cap of 100GB (just not good enough on a 50mb line).... I asked if there was any chance they'd match the eircom offer but no... pity, I've been with them for 8 years.

I'm just after signing up new contract with digiweb so... I got up to 70 megs with 350gig limit and off peak calls for 39.95 a month.
So it works out cheaper than eircom as 70megs is 45 for few months then it's 60 also Eircom say no limits but really FUP is set at 200gigs - this is what I was told. Other package they have up is up to 50 megs and also 200gig limit it is for 35 for first few months and then 50.
It seems that Vodafone and digiweb have better offers - I didn't take Vodafone as I would have to stick with old broadband for another while, but when upgrading with Digiweb you don't have to wait. Also important thing is that due to mess with addresses they might not be aware that you can have fibre yet. I had a bit of argument with Digiweb as they said I can't get it - they spelled my address as river grove while in eircom's db it is under rivergrove. Anyways I doubt I will pass 350 mark in a month, right now on average I'm using 80gb/month so I went ahead with Digi, I hope I wont regret it.

P.s. Another think is that digiweb's website is not updated if you contact sales they will give you more competitive offer - thanks ShiverinEskimo for that suggestion.

PS2 I'll report speeds etc once it's up and running so up to 10 working days I should be back here ;)

Yanogore - I'm in Oranhill and currently have a digiweb wireless connection, so I was very interested in your post about the digiweb deal.

When you re-post would you mind confirming that this package you've signed up for is fibre with digiweb and that you are switching from a digiweb wireless connection?

Looking at the digiweb website I can't see an exact match for your package but the nearest I can see is their Fibreplus option which is advertised at e55 a month (200gb cap) or e65 with free calls. The there is an additional 49 euro connection fee. So it looks like you got a deal alright.

Also did you already have an active phone line in your house or does that even relvant if it's a fibre connection?

Finally, for what is worth I've had Digiweb wireless for about 6 years and it has always worked perfectly.

Hi I'm still waiting for my fibre, eircom has to connect new socket in my house.

Regarding other questions, I have digiweb metro package which is radio based and I'm switching to digiweb fibre, I think that website is out dated. The 50 Euro fee is for eircom to connect new socket.

Eircom line doesn't have to be active you just need wiring.

I'd question that charge. Eircom install the new NTU socket free of charge as part of a free install.

I know that they don't charge for it when you sign up for fibre with eircom, I'm not sure i it's the case when you are getting it with someone else. What worries me is that I should get it by tomorrow or day after and I didn't even get the txt with date when eircom is coming to put in that socket - might have to ring digiweb today.

the charge is because all work for the replacement of the socket is outsourced by eircom to a company called KN networks, eircom install the socket for free at a loss, its not as if they aint gonna make it back with the really high prices they charge

when i ordered magnet fiber i had the same problem with not receiving the text, ordered monday morning (12th aug), modem came tuesday morning (13th aug) at 9am, heard nothing about install dates, so rang up magnet to find out what the story was, texts with install dates get sent out from eircom (no surprise why i didnt get that text so) and was givin a install date of the 21st aug

so id ring to find out what the story is

i left digiweb as i was sick of paying near 50 a month for a socalled 30/1mb metro package that was nowhere near 30mb, i normally got speeds of 10-20mb on good days and all with a 100GB a month limit

i now pay 45 a month contract free and am on a unlimited package of 70/20 but i sync at 50/20 due to distance from my cabinet (1000M+), and have used near 400GB this month on this laptop alone, then u have another computer (312GB usage) and a ps3 with likes of netflix running for best part of the day and i havnt been slowed down once

heres my speed while streaming Full HD to my tv

    Hi,
We recently purchased a home in Costa na Mara and are looking for a reliable and fast internet service. Based on your experience, which of the following would you recommend:
    • Vodafone
    • Digiweb
    • Eir
    • Fastcom
    • Pure Telecom

Would be great to get some feedback from people of their experience of the above companies. Thanks.
