    Wow!!
no matter how much I dislike cyclists I would never knock one off their bike and then drive off. I hope she gets punished for it.

However I do think cyclists should pay road tax.

Ah, she also took a picture of her speedometer at 95 mph! I did that too once. Then I went up to second :)

Psst...they do! It seems lost to most people that the vast majority of cyclists also own a car. Therefore, in the places where there is such thing as a "road tax" (tax paid for the use of the roads), they pay it. Where there is a "motor tax" (tax paid for the ownership of a motor vehicle), most of them pay it as well since they will have a car in the garage/driveway/carport.

I did it as well but I was in reverse so the forward-facing camera came in handy to snap the speedo over my shoulder from behind!

    Didn't take long.

Is the pedantic response really valid though?

irrespective of what it's called it's a tax you have to pay before using the roads with you vehicle.

Should the same not apply to other road users is the point being made.

i sometimes walk on the road. I also used to jog a lot. im from the country side and there arent too many footpaths until i get to the closest village.

    Should i pay "road tax"?

Roads and related amenities are mostly funded through the general tax pool.

I'm loving this story. Entitled, idiotic, dangerous woman brags about her own stupidity and selfishness and draws the attention to the police. They have her confession, they have her name and details, they have a complaining victim, they have witnesses. Can't wait for updates.

For the privilege of driving a motorized mode of transport.

    Bikes don't have a motor.

No you should just take a different route/ start to cycle/ get a car and avoid walking/running on roads with no footpaths where you are at danger to yourself and others!

Paths tax, then. It's not like footpaths build and maintain themselves. Also, I'm not 100% sure about this but I have the strong suspect that and hypothetical road only open to bicycles (not the cycling lane at the side of a motor vehicle road) would require less maintenance than a footpath, due to the average weight of the users being the same, but the act of walking being more of an impact nature (as a human walks, their feet essentially bang and bang on the surface, rather than roll on it).

Besides, it would be funny to see what such a tax would be based upon. CO2 emissions? And from which side would they be measured? Or maybe lung capacity in cc? :D

I would imagine the scenario would play out something like this

Cyclist: Hi, I'd like to pay the motor tax on my bike please.

Motor Tax Clerk: No problem. I love how fair the tax system is, the higher CO2 emissions you have, the higher bracket you are. What are the emissions on your vehicle?

Cyclist: That would be 0, thanks.

Motor Tax Clerk: Let me just input that into the system.......oh that looks wrong.......it's saying €0.....but surely your bike should be under motor tax....

Pedantics. Child allowance doesnt exist either but you rarely hear people calling it child benefit.

    Hardly pedantic.

    Children are children.

God what an idiot. Hope she get done for fleeing the scene of an accident. What if the guy broke his neck she would have left him there. Guy on the bike has the same entitlement to use the road as your one in the car. Lots of bad drivers and cyclists out there, doesn't mean one group should be forced off the road.

I doubt she went out of her way to hit the cyclist. Ive seen a lot of cyclists hit by cars around dublin, and the majority of the time its been because of them breaking a red light, not looking or weaving through traffic when they shouldnt.

Not all accidents involving cyclists are the cyclists fault but id be quicker to blame them than car drivers in most cases.

was this not in the UK? where it is a road fund tax?

You're right; it probably was the cyclists fault. They don't even pay road tax.

It's actually called a Vehicle Tax as it's in the UK.

Any statistics to back this up?
A quick google turned up this. A report gathered involving 427 Bike car collisions over a 4 year period that directly contradicts your statement. So can you enlighten us on how you reached the conclusion that most collisions are the fault of the cyclist?

Punishment should be fitting. One year cycling back and forth from whatever school/workplace she attends :D

She went round a corner too fast and ended up on the wrong side of the road and that's how she hit the cyclist, not really his fault to be fair.

if thats the case we shall see when the police presumably finish up and we'll hear more.

So, including bicycles, the following don't legally require motor tax paid on them:
    • State-owned vehicles
    • Diplomatic vehicles
    • Vehicles exempted under the Disabled Drivers and Disabled Passengers (Tax Concessions) Regulations, 1994 (S.I. No. 353 of 1994)
    • Vehicles which are used exclusively for the transport (whether by carriage or traction) of lifeboats and their gear or any equipment for affording assistance towards the preservation of life and property in cases of ship-wreck and distress at sea
    • Vehicles which are used exclusively for the transport (whether by carriage or traction) of road construction machinery used for no purpose other than the construction or repair of roads
    • Refuse carts, sweeping machines or watering machines used exclusively for cleansing public streets and roads
    • Ambulances, road-rollers or fire engines
    • Vehicles kept by a local authority and used exclusively for the purpose of their fire brigade service.
    • Vehicles which are used exclusively for mountain and cave rescue purposes
    • Vehicles which are used exclusively for underwater search and recovery purposes

Should the above be asked to immediately leave the road by the 'I pay road tax (sic)" brigade?

If you have a difficulty with the amount of 'road / motor' tax you pay, you have the following choices:

Use public transport, walk or cycle
    Buy a smaller engined car
Buy a car manufactured after 2008 that is assessed on its carbon output. Smaller car = less pollution = less tax.

But please don't expect cyclists to pick up the tab for their use of the roads and infrastructure that are paid out of their own taxes.

Maybe public transport is not an option and maybe people don't have the money to change car.

Well fair enough, but there's plenty of people who chose to drive as a first choice where other options do exist.

a much better link to the story , where the cyclist says "my side of the road" could do with a bit of clarification, I wonder was he going against or with the direction her car was going.

Although I will concede that this looks like one of the minority of cases where the driver is definitely at fault.
