Football Championship Thread 2013

There's nowhere to discuss the Championship in general and maybe the games without the interest to have a thread of their own.

Cavan playing very well to start the year off. Lovely foot passing, nice scores and tough tight defence.

Really enjoying the game I have to say.

Armagh need to sort themselves out. Some seriously aimless play.Bringing on a clearly unfit Brendan Donaghy proves how desperate they are.

Sad to see the once great Armagh so poor. They are rudderless in the forwards when Jamie Clarke is tied up. Their midfield is non existent. This is not a good Cavan side either.

If there's ever a one man team it's armagh totally reliant on Jamie Clarke (louth and paddy Keenan also spring to mind)

Awful, awful refereeing! What the hell is he at blowing for a free with Clarke through on goal?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,386 ✭✭✭✭DDC1990

Martin Dunne looks a great young player. Started out really poorly, but got a few scores and looks a really skillful player.

Deegan is doing well. Should have sent Jamie Clarke and the Cavan Number 8 off for punching though.

EDIT: Just as I say that he blows up Jamie Clarke after he gets the goal!

    Armagh coming back into it.

He was a bit unlucky, he was dragged back, he blew whistle then he went on but Cavan had stopped a little anyway then.

It may get them going either way..

Woeful decision not to award the goal there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,386 ✭✭✭✭DDC1990

No it was a good descision not to award the goal.

The mistake was blowing the whistle.

You can't whistle up and then give the goal.

Cavan defenders eased up a bit after hearing the whistle. He might well have scored but you can't be sure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,467 ✭✭✭Oasis_Dublin

I don't think they did ease up. It happened so quickly. I agree the mistake was in the whistling.

Shooting has been pretty poor in this game so far.

Eugene Keating is playing well but that's the second good goal chance that he's spurned. Cavan should be out of sight here.

Cavan doing their best to throw it away.

    Deflected in!

Good finish there. Only 1 in it now. Cavan capitulating.

Terrible defending from Cavan there. Soft goal.

This is a ridiculous situation that the GAA need to address.

Whats their problem with introducing an advantage rule?

Time and time again we see players score perfect goals only to have them disallowed and because the oppising team fouled them. It penalises the scoring team to have it called back for a free.

Surely the fact that the ball was netted while the scorer was being fouled makes the goal even better. It should only be called back for a free if the player being fouled misses the goal as happens in rugby.

    Great response from the Cavanmen.

Great character from Cavan to get back on top. They were being hammered, and I thought the goal would kill them off, but back they fought. Hope they hold on. They've played most of the football.

As far as I'm aware there is an advantage rule but it's not much use if the referee hasn't got the foresight to be able to implement it. To many referees are too whistle happy. That decision will likely cost Armagh this game.

Advantage rule comes in from next January. Passed at Congress this year.

    ADVANTAGE RULE
Amend Rules 4.36 and 5.35, Official Guide (Part II) 2012, Playing Rules of Football to read:
“When a foul is committed the referee may allow the play to continue if he considers it to be to the advantage of the offended team. He shall signal that advantage by raising an arm upright. If he deems no advantage to have occurred, he may subsequently award a free for that foul from where it occurred (except as provided
under Exceptions (v) and (vi) of Rule 2.2). The referee shall allow the advantage to run by maintaining his
arm in the upright position for up to five seconds after the initial foul or for less time if it becomes clear that
no advantage has accrued. He shall apply any relevant disciplinary action.”

This came about because of the work of the Football Review Committee.

Ironic note - the county that were most strongly opposed to the recommendations of the FRC proposals - Armagh. A number of Armagh folk spoke out opposing the FRC.

Pretty sure Grimley was one of the people giving out about the FRC. Think there were a fair few other Armagh lads opposed as well.

Especially when you consider the age profile of the two teams. Cavan's oldest player was 27 and their 2nd oldest was 25.

Basically a team of lads between 21 and 24

Not a huge amount of intercounty experience in that Cavan team.

9 Points for Dunne. Excellent stuff. On his Debut.

    Well done Cavan

Not a bad debut from Martin Dunne, 8 points from play.

Poor enough game, hopefully the Connacht final will be a bit better. :pac:

Considering how Dunne started the game, with three or four wides, that was a great turn around from him. Was that Armagh playing badly, or is that the level they are at at the moment? Will they pose a threat in the qualifiers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,101 ✭✭✭klairondavis

Enjoyable game. Cavan much the better team. Scoreline did not do justice to how much superior they were to Armagh.

Have Brolly and Spillane swapped places?!

To say Brolly dislikes Grimley is an understatement.

Tactically Cavan got it spot on.

The basic problem is that under the current rules setup makes it too advantageous for a side to set up defensively.

For the most part there is little to no penalty for a team that consistently pulls opposition players down in the middle of the field allowing defenders to funnel back and restrict space inside their own 45 metre line.

The amount of space the Cavan forwards got compared to the amount the Armagh forwards got.

It's one thing to kick a point when you are being marked by one defender, it's a whole different kettle of fish when you are being marked by two or more players.

Great performance by Cavan they played some very good football and were very sensible in their use of possession.Held onto the ball when it was required a drove long balls into space in front of their full forward line when there was an oppurtunity to do.Martin Dunne and Eugene Keating in the full forward line were outstanding and they defended very well also and Jamie Clarke barely got a sniff of the ball.

Martin Dunne scored 9 points 8 from play on his debut today.I wonder is that a scoring record for player on his championship debut.

Terrible decision by Maurice Deegan to disallow the goal and this type of refereeing just encourages cynical fouling.Thankfully there was more than 2 points in it at the end.

Just home from the game (I'm ten minutes drive from Breffni luckily :D).

Fantastic showing from Cavan. They've had alot of detractors even in the county but they should have won today by more.

I also hope this will stop the criticism of Terry Hyland. He got the team selection and his tactics exactly right today.

    Keating and Dunne were superb.

I didn't see the Cavan game, but did Dunne score 8 points from play on his debut? That is pretty phenomenal....in fact, I'm not sure I remember someone doing that before. 8 points from play is very rarely seen from anyone.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 252 ✭✭Kinder Bueno

He sure did but I think I would've kicked a few myself against that dire Armagh defence.

That was a shocking call by ref to not allow the advantage for Armagh goal. Just seeing it now.

Agreed. Absolutely crazy tbh....brilliant goal by Clarke.

Next up watch out for a lesson by Carlow in how not to defend! Especially 2nd Westmeath goal, when our keeper just kicks it to them.

They're a Division 2 team. Dunne did very well on his championship debut and is having a terrific season after playing very well in the League.

    1) Clarke should have been sent off earlier for punching the Cavan player along with the Cavan midfielder.

    2) He took 9 steps before hopping the ball.

Not really as big a call having seen the replay.

I don't think it made any difference to the result anyway. Cavan gifted Armagh a goal a couple of minutes later and still had the composure to pull away again and win the match.

Carlow were desperate today, really really bad!

Carlow were desperate today, really really bad!

Yep, we are usually not great but can rise to produce a once off quality display in championship. 2 years ago we beat Louth, last year drew with Meath.

But this year its just a joke. Manager is clueless, his tactics make no sense, if we are a pt ahead or 15 pts down he'll never change anything! Was sitting behind him today and he never once shouted any instructions, or did anything...he decided to sit down for a few mins as we were being overrun. It was unreal some of the stuff Carlow did, like a bad junior side. Westmeath wud have learned nothing from today at all

We were wiped out at mf, but yet he kept one of the best mfs in the country in hf/ff line all game. Our best goalscorer was the "sweeper" role....he did the same crap in Div 4 as we lost to Waterford, Leitrim etc...and thought that'd work today...aghh so frustrating.

It was seriously humiliating today watching that in a Carlow jersey. Did see it coming tho, and as much as I hate betting against my own co, did have 100 on Westmeath +6 or more. Got 220 back. Kinda eases the pain a bit

Kerry looking v.comfortable at half time.

In second gear. 0-11 to 0-04.

Kerry just cruising along, not tearing it up by any means, but showing flashes of brilliance.

Not up against anything unfortunately. Tipp backs trying but the experience of the Kerry forwards is telling.

That's a ridiculous side of the draw anyway. If Sligo win today, they face Leitrim and then the winner of that makes the Connacht final and last round of the qualifiers.

So you'll have Sligo, for example, through to the last 12 teams left in the championship by virtue of beating two Division 4 teams!

London just missed a penalty too!
