    the letter e

As I was going to St. Ives,
I met a man with seven wives.
    Each wife had seven sacks,
    Each sack had seven cats,
    Each cat had seven kits.
    Kits, cats, sacks and wives,
How many were going to St. Ives?

that puzzle was answered my one is now up and you need to answer the question before you put a new puzzle up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,318 ✭✭✭Absoluvely

This only makes sense if you only get to put up a new puzzle if you had the right answer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,048 ✭✭✭brugmand

well did you read the rules ?

The right answer is 1. It's a pretty well-known puzzle though. You can read all about it here.

So I got the right answer and the new puzzle is How many squares are there on a chess board?

    No Googling!

More than 65. You're on the right track though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,742 ✭✭✭✭Wichita Lineman

67 - the squares on the board, the board itself and the 2 squares playing it ha ha - no offense intended to chess players it's just a guess.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,318 ✭✭✭Absoluvely

    Nope. It's more than 67.

There are sixty-four "1x1" squares and there's one "8x8" square [the board]. You just gotta find out how many "2x2" squares and "3x3" squares and so on there are and add them up.

How can you make this sum add up by using just one stroke of the pen (obviously you'll need to write it down although I just checked there and you can do it on the keyboard)

    5+5+5 = 550

It's going to be at least another five years before anyone can get this.
