Didn't spot a thread on this fight but should be a good match up.

Lamont's 2nd fight since the Khan fight. He ko'd Kendal Holt last time out after looking flat for the first 3 rounds.

Matthysse is supposed to be a slow starting and in his last fight he ko'd Mike Dallas jnr in round 1. Lost a debatable one to Zab Judah aswell.

Pitty Kell Brook is missing out but haven't seen enough of Lee Purdy to know if he has ko power to catch Devon Alexander

Purdy has a puncher's chance against Alexander but that's about all you could say for him really.

Personally I don't rate him particularly highly at all, he was found wanting at domestic level lost his British title to Colin Lynes. Not exactly a world beater.

Not sure what to make of the Peterson Matthysse fight. I've been very careful not to jump on the Matthysse bandwagon, him and GGG seem to be the most hyped boxers in the world at the moment.

If Peterson survives the early rounds i have a feeling he will pull this off, dont forget matthysse has a loss to Zab Judah, as for Purdy Vs Alexander purdy shouldnt even be getting a shot not even a top 10 fighter unless he lands a hail mary punch Alexander will win with ease

Looks like Hearne is trying to build some sort of relationship with Goldenboy. First feeding Rees to Broner and now throwing Purdy in with Alexander.

Matthysse-Peterson should be a war. I think Peterson could well try to turn this into a dogfight on the inside, smothering Matthysse as much as possible and neutralising his power to some extent. Peterson is chinny but he's durable, Matthysse has an excellent chin but if he's getting it in the body for 5-6 rounds he may slow enough for Peterson to box him a little more.

Matthysse's power is very real though, and he took Ajose's best shots for 9 or 10 rounds without ever slowing down at all. He's a better boxer than he's given credit for as well and his knockout of Dallas was a beautiful little counter in the pocket:

    NhgX3JM.gif

Peterson did look like a beast against Holt but I don't see Matthysse getting discouraged anywhere near as easily. Also, staying close to Lucas is going to be a real high wire act. Judah says Matthysse's the hardest puncher he ever faced (don't know if that includes Kostya) and Peterson was badly hurt by Tim Bradley.

I don't know if Peterson can take Matthysse's power to be honest, I think he struggles to fight as aggressively as he did against Holt when those really heavy shots are coming back at him. He could try to box at range, stepping in on occasion, and hoping that's enough for the judges to give it to him. But he's not the same type of fighter as Judah and Alexander and Matthysse has looked far more aggressive ever since those fights.

It's a hard one to call with real confidence, but I think the time might be right for Lucas. He's not going to find it easy to put Peterson away but I think if a war breaks out he's the more likely man to win it. For whoever wins it's a big statement, if either wins by stoppage then it's a huge one.

I'm not sure those in charge are hyping Matthysse up in the traditional sense though, i.e. Adrien Broner. He is being put forward as an entertainer with the potential to win a world title, more so than someone who will build a legacy. Someone that should really appeal to both the hardcore boxing fan and casual fan.
From what we've seen of him so far I think we can certainly say he's not elite but I think anyone who puts this forward as a criticism of him is completely missing the point.

Personally I hope Matthysse wins. He is one of my favourite boxers around right now. Having said that, Peterson is good to watch too, with his come-forward style and determined attitude. I am really, really looking forward to this one.

I think Peterson will win. I'll be backing him at 5/2.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,252 ✭✭✭FTA69

Right, I've called Matthyse by KO win but I'm not sure; it's a decision that doesn't sit well with me for some reason. Peterson is rugged on the inside and a better boxer to boot, chances are he'll be able to negate Matthyse's power from that position while working good shots to the body. I can also see Peterson outboxing Matthyse for periods of the fight. If he can balance the tight rope he may well come out with the decision. I think that's a real possibility and it's 7/2 odds.

However, Matthyse is tough as they come. He has a solid jaw, ridiculous power and in my opinion, underrated boxing skills and footwork. Peterson has been dropped by Bradley and Ortiz and if he sticks with his usual style I'd say it's pretty much guaranteed he'll be dropped again. This will result in either a KO or else dropping points to Matthyse. If he drops enough points we may see Lucas winning a hard-fought decision.

    Lucas by KO - Evens
    Lucas by Decision - 2/1
    Lamont by Decision - 7/2

These are appealing odds by any stretch and I think I'll back Peterson by decision with a smaller bet on Lucas by KO with the hopes of breaking relatively even.

I have a bad feeling I'll get stung though by a Lucas decision, the same way I did by backing Garcia to KO Judah.

    Alexander vs Purdy

Alexander is leagues ahead of Purdy. Leagues like. Purdy's last win was against a lad with 15 losses. This really is a mismatch. However Alexander hasn't much power in my opinion with him going to decision in his last 5 or 6 fights. Purdy has never been stopped but considering the calibre of fighter he has been facing that's not surprising.

Alexander to win on points is 2/1 and while I don't see him sparking Purdy I can well see Purdy's corner throwing in the towel before the 7th round.

It's a tough one to call. I find it hard to see Matthysse being outboxed, Alexander couldn't do it and he's a better boxer with a more awkward style than Peterson.

I think Peterson can win exchanges on the inside and then get on his bike for a minute or so, pumping the jab and waiting to come in again. But Matthysse isn't a plodder and he's pretty good at cutting off the ring and applying pressure, and I don't think Peterson's going to be able to stay away for long stretches unless he's completely on the run.

So eventually they're bound to tear into each other and it's a matter of who's the better man in the trenches then. Maybe Peterson forces Lucas back, it'd be a major achievement if he did.

I wouldn't say that really he is getting Purdy a shot he would never get otherwise, he knows full well purdy wont win but he is giving him his punchers chance to win a world title, realisticly purdy will never be a world champion so its not like hearn is sacraficing one of his top prospects who with more expierence could win a world title

Great article on Matthysse's life, well worth the read - http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/8869797/lucas-matthysse-shares-big-plans-2013

Matthyse is 11/4 to win by KO in rounds 7-12 while it's 11/10 for either fighter to win a decision. Not bad punts in my opinion.

peterson mattyyse should be a cracking fight. Lee Purdy is def out of his dept. How Eddie hearn pulled that one of

Matthysse has said he has no interest in fighting Khan because he wants to face better fighters. I'm sure Khan is both angered and relieved at the same time.

Pretty funny. The way he says it, it's not even like he's trying to rile or insult Khan, he just genuinely regards Khan as irrelevant.

Khan's people wouldn't let him anywhere near Matthysse anyway, and certainly not if he'd beaten Peterson and Garcia along the way. Khan's going to fight Alexander in Novermber/December, and whoever wins that is going to fight Mayweather. If Khan gets that win they'll make the fight with Floyd as quick as possible, leave it too long and someone else will knock Khan out.

So it turns out there's been no random drug testing for this fight either! Like the Broner-DeMarco and Broner-Malignaggi fights, the fighters had submitted the forms and had expected to be tested, and it never happened. USADA are saying that Golden Boy never even contacted them to do any testing for this fight.

One thing that really annoys me about boxing is how easily the so called boxing 'journalists' will let something like this go. De La Hoya and Schaefer should be getting hammered with questions over this, as this is potentially a really serious scandal, but in reality they'll barely be pressed on the matter at all. I don't know if there's any sport that has a more cowardly press corp than boxing. I guess it's a product of the power promoters have.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,217 ✭✭✭Dick phelan

Random drug testing really should be made standard it really is the only way to clean up the sport theres been quite a few caught of recent and no dought theres more getting away with it

Steve Smoger has been appointed to ref this. They couldn't have chosen better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,217 ✭✭✭Dick phelan

Purdy couldnt make the weight title is no longer on the line now ffs you'd reckon he would have done anything to make weight for this fight like he was lucky to get a shot at the title in the first place

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,543 ✭✭✭Underground

Seems pretty amateurish on Purdy's part alright.

This whole rigmarole has done nothing to help Matchroom's credibility imo. From Brook pulling out twice to this, the whole thing has been one big shambles.
Purdy didn't make weight for one his recent fights either if memory serves me correctly, might have been his last fight or the Carasco fight.

How much notice did Purdy have for the fight?

The ring walk for Alexander's fight is scheduled for 2.15am. If that goes the distance then.... 3.30ish? I'm not gonna stand by that though :)

Khan really is such a feckin fool cant stand the guy he is completly arrogant yet doesnt have the performances to back it up, god i hope by some unlikly chance he fights Lucas i will relish seeing him on the canvas and career over

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,543 ✭✭✭Underground

lol he spends about 7 minutes ranting about Kell Brook all the while trying to convince us that he's got nothing against him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,225 ✭✭✭Henno30

Any respect Khan gains in the ring he throws away as soon as he opens his mouth.

Am looking forward to Peterson V Mathysse. As some have suggested already this has the potential to turn into a real war. I think it will be scrappy early on, with Peterson grabbing and holding and trying to have success on the inside. However, it will open up in the middle rounds (as long as Peterson avoids getting sparked), and I can see Peterson grinding Mathysse down and edging a close decision.
There is no doubt that the bookies have got the prices way wrong on this fight. I would have Matthysse a very slight fav-maybe 5/6 and Peterson 6/5 if I was pricing it up, but it could easily be argued that Peterson deserves to be favourite. He is definitely value at 9/4, as the 5/2 seems to be well gone now-well done to those who snapped it up. This has the potential to be a great fight-hopefully it turns out that way and there is no dodgy decision.
As for Purdy? No chance in my opinion. A lamb to slaughter.

Lol Khan blaming his glass jaw on being weight drained Amir ITS You stop blaming trainers stop blaming weight and stop blaming judges except it you are an average pro and have a glass jaw, thinks he can beat Mayweather he isnt fit to lace Floyds gloves, doesnt deserve to share the ring with that ledgend, he said aswell he used outbox pacquiao in sparring Shut up Amir Manny Pac would have destroyed you and quick you would have been Hatton'd i really have developed a hatered for that idiot Such a cry baby wah wah its everyone elses fault sky can hype up a fight with Floyd all they want real boxing fans know Khan will be destroyed

no mention at all from sky about Purdy failing to make weight?

    This isn't for the title

EDIT: ah there we go they finally mention it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,217 ✭✭✭Dick phelan

They did mention that he didnt make the weight they spoke about it at the start of the broadcast Nicky Piper said he should move up after this fight as its clear he cant make the weight

Christ Purdy looking like a rabbit caught in headlights being as outclassed as i feared this will be over within 6

My bad, didn't hear that at all

Purdy looks to have a solid enough chin going by that round

Purdy is very limited, but Alexander hasn't got much power or dare i say it, much heart

could get interesting after 6 or 7 rounds if Purdy is still coming

  • Moderators Posts: 8,832 ✭✭✭x PyRo

Alexander's roaring with every shot that he throws is more annoying than Broner's.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,217 ✭✭✭Dick phelan

Alexander doesnt have the power but i still dont think Purdy will last to long he really is eating so manny shots particularly uppercuts he just looks so far out of his league its amazing this was originally a world title fight two fighters on complete different levels

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,317 ✭✭✭HigginsJ

Alexander is very annoying with all that grunting. Doesn't seem to have much power but unreal hand speed

compensating for a lack of power

Purdy is lacking the basic fundamentals by the looks of it

Decent chin but not alot much else

Alexander has amazing fast hands unreal links his combos together very well even if they dont have much power

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,317 ✭✭✭HigginsJ

Did Alexander look like he was running out of ideas in that round

  • Moderators Posts: 8,832 ✭✭✭x PyRo

Better round from Purdy, hope he can build upon it now but getting walloped anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,317 ✭✭✭HigginsJ

Purdy is completely out of his depth but having never seen Alexander before I'm fairly unimpressed. He has no power what so ever.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,325 ✭✭✭gene_tunney

Do people here not realise that Alexander has clearly injured his left hand?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,325 ✭✭✭gene_tunney

Alexander is winning every round with one hand. Literally.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,325 ✭✭✭gene_tunney

Barker pulls Purdy out. Good decision.
