Emobile dongle won't install. End of tether!

Well I've just wasted most of my Sunday on hold to emobile's tech support (never got through but I'm very familiar with Snow Patrol now). Ended up doing one of those chat support things, which was useless.

    Deep breath.

I have their mobile broadband and yesterday got a new dongle as an upgrade. Previous one was working fine, if a little slow. Tried to install new one and PC is recognising it but won't install. I have tried everything. Uninstalled everything (rebooted), system restore, device upgrade (there wasn't one), cleaned the registry, everything. When I look at it in device manager it has a yellow ! beside it but troubleshooting not working. It's the computer, because I tried it on another laptop and it installed fine. Emobile have said it's not their problem now but it was working fine until I tried this. Any ideas anyone? I really don't have cash lying around for a technician and am afraid if I try to change providers I'll just have the same problem.

    In grateful anticipation,

    E

    problem with your chipset drivers?

the chipset drivers is usually responsible for the usb ports on a computer

    what os are you using?

In case I gave the impression I knew what I was talking about above, I don't. Using Windows XP. Will Google 'chipset drivers' now!

I had a look at chipset drivers. Am I right in saying I need to be online to install/update them? Therein lies the problem!

    What pc have you got,
eg dell 520g, you could download the driver files, from your laptop, copy files to a usb key.
Can you post a screen shot of device manager ,showing yellow icon,
    click on missing chipset,drivers .
Its even possible to download files onto a mobile phone ,sdcard.
if you have a smartphone with wifi on it.

    http://www.wikihow.com/Take-a-Screenshot-in-Microsoft-Windows

you can install them from a usb key, or even a cdr disc.
usb to sd micro card unit 2 euro dealz shop,or similar shop.
OR go to net cafe, copy files to a usb key ,or burn to cdr at 2x speed.

Have a look in any documentation and make sure that the driver that it comes with supports windows xp. What model of dongle is it? If you go onto the manufacturer website, find the drivers section, they will probably (at least hopefully for you!) offer a windows xp driver.

It's an iQon laptop. They don't make them any more, pretty sure they went out of business. I've had it 7 years and it's never given me any bother. Am attaching screenshot. Hope you can see it as I had to compress it. When I right click on it and go to properties then troubleshoot I get an error message.

I have internet access on another laptop and a USB stick.

I don,t have MS office, OR word installed, can you post image in a jpeg ,or file that can be viewed

New pic attached. I honestly can't find a model number anywhere on it! All it has underneath is a long serial number. I think Iqon were made by Phillips if that's any use?

    Many thanks,

CAN you type what it says on highlighted in blue line,in the image,
i can,t zoom in on it.
IT looks like haauwiea something something usb device,

if the dvdrom device driver is missing,it makes no difference to using a usb dongle.
    can u post another pic,
after scrolling down to device manager,
which shows the usb, or chipset drivers ,
    LOWER part of device list.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,163 ✭✭✭ZENER

In My Computer has a new disc icon appeared since you plugged in the dongle ? Usually any drivers are contained in this "disc".

Can you post a larger picture of that screen grab. It's too small to see anything.

    FROM memory,
the drivers maybe stored on the dongle,
which looks like a usb drive to the pc,
or else stored on a setup cdrom you get with the dongle.
Looks like you may not have all the chipset drivers installed to acess the dongle as a usb device.
click on the dongle in the other laptop, see what files you can see.
do not run any install or setup program on the other laptop.
eg when ii say other laptop i mean,
    not the iqon laptop.

I don't think so. It's just partition (C) My documents and Shared documents.

CAN you post a pic which shows the usb chipset s part of device manager,
is there any other yellow exclamation marks in device manager.
apart from the 2 in the first picture.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,163 ✭✭✭ZENER

Have you fully un-installed the previous dongle drivers ? Unplug the new dongle. Check in Network adapters and make sure you delete any references to the previous dongle. Then plug in the new dongle, in My Computer check if the new disc icon has appeared. Browse through it to see if there are any installers or driver directories. Usually these devices are treated like a CD and autorun when inserted to allow installation.

    Hi Ken,

I'm pretty sure I have. All that is under network adapters is 1394 network adapter and a Realtek one with a red cross through it. (Not sure what this is 0 should I uninstall it?).

When I plug in the dongle nothing new shows up in My Computer

    PLUG dongle into other laptop,

    wait 3 minutes,
    does another drive, e, f, appear ?
    in my computer,
    or click, open ,explore device,

DONT, run, install,or click setup on laptop 2.

Maybe you could get emobile to email, you, or give you cdrom disc ,
with haiwaiw driver files, and a setup program on it.

I could try but since it installed earlier on my other laptop they said it's essentially not their problem.

No, the problem one is XP and this (working) one is Windows 7

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,593 ✭✭✭Soundman

Think that might be the issue. I'm not finding much in the way of these dongles working on XP. Vista seems to be the earliest that I can find them working on. Could you plug it into the Win 7 laptop and try and create a hotspot from there that you can connect to from the XP laptop?

Now you're scaring me! The laptop I work on (the banjaxed one) isn't wireless enabled. Wouldn't I need wireless for a hotspot? Also, the original dongle worked fine. It was only when I tried to install the new one that it went haywire.

Nope. It was meant to just plug in and install itself. It appears not to have done that!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,593 ✭✭✭Soundman

Hmm. I'm not finding a link to the software anywhere. The eMobile site seems to have a couple of pages down or removed as well.

Did it come with a micro SD card to insert into the dongle? Make sure both SIM and SD card are in properly if it came with both. From what you have been saying, it is having issues finding drivers for the storage part of it rather than the actual broadband part.

It's the same sim from the old dongle. It's in properly and working fine - I'm using it now on this laptop.

    Thanks again,

Ok. What Service Pack is your XP laptop running? Is it fully up to date? What I am reading now says that it would need to be Service Pack 3.

Also saying that it's specs are:

    -Driverless
    -Zero installation
    -Auto connect, auto reconnect

Makes it even more strange that you are having issues.

Click on Start and then Control Panel.

Click on the Performance and Maintenance link.

Note: If you're viewing the Classic View of Control Panel, you won't see this link. Simply double-click on the System icon and proceed to Step 4.

In the Performance and Maintenance window, click on the System Control Panel icon at the bottom of the window.

When the System Properties window opens it should default to the General tab. If not, choose it manually.

In the System: area of the General tab you'll find the operating system version and the service pack level. See the screen shot on this page for an idea of what you're looking for.

Note: If you don't have any service pack installed, you won't see "Service Pack 0" or "Service Pack None" - there will be no reference to a service pack at all.

The latest Windows XP service pack is Service Pack 3 (SP3).

If you only have SP1 or SP2 installed, I highly recommend that you install Windows XP SP3 immediately, either via Windows Update or manually via the correct link here.

Important: If you only have Windows XP SP1, or if you have no Windows XP service pack installed at all, you must first install Windows XP SP1a, available here, before installing Windows XP SP3.

On iqon laptop, go to control panel, security updates, set download updates automatically,If its connected to the web,
eg by ethernet ,it,ll eventually download all the updates,sp1, sp1,
    sp3 .
this is 100 s of megs of data.
    Then at some point ,
Dialog box, will,. ask, do you wish to install , service pack 2, service pack 3 etc .
    Click ok, ok, install ,ok.wait.
service pack 3 could take 20 minutes to install.
Maybe go to friend and plug laptop into router,ia ethernet, cable
    or use wifi signal.

it could take 2 hours ,download updates ,install them.
ON a 4meg per sec connection.
Theres spa2,3, and various security updates.

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=25129

    Maybe go to netcafe,
plug in laptop to an ethernet cable.

    Download chrome,or iron browser too,

You need sp2, sp3 to protect against virus,es ,malware etc

    http://www.srware.net/en/software_srware_iron.php

Iron Browser is better sends no info to google .more secure too.

If you right click on the Huawei entry in the device manager (the one with the ! per your screenshot), and go to properties, you'll see a box saying device status. What is written there? It should be a code, from this, might be able to fix it.

We need to solve that problem - the computer is recognising the device, just not letting you use it, so we need to get rid of that '!'!!!

There does seem to be quite a few people on google (mostly with win 7) saying that the Huawei Modems are a bit flakey, with the users are reporting the device is only being recognised as a Mass Storage Device and not a modem...

Create a new user account on you lappy and see if it will install.

If successful you can copy the settings to your original account.
