€800 luxobarge? This will end well !

Plenty of sub 2k 7 series and S classes out there OP, check the bangernomics thread as starting point.

Not sure how much you will find for sub 1k though. (you do know they will need to be taxed at circa 1.8k pa right)

Bigger the better and all that, I reccomend this
If I was on expenses for fuel costs I would have this in a heartbeat

i saw that but i want a car that you dont see many of such as old merc's jag's bmw's etc but i am still half tempted by the volvo at that price if only it was closer to me

I'd nearly go so far as to say the Volvo is rarer however I do get the point that it may not be special enough. Still though it would be worth considering and I'd reckon it would be a lot more hassle free than other luxobarges

i only want to spend around 800 as i will be only driving it a few weekends a year. my daily driver only cost me 710 last year so the way is see it is why spend big money on a car i will only drive a few days a year

Ah come on, if i was buying a summer car that could be any engine size i definitely wouldn't even consider a poxy Volvo family wagon. That 2.5 wouldn't pull ya outta bed!

ya i see your point but the only time people my age down my way buy a volvo is when they want to weld the diff, i know if i bought that i would end up doing that in a year or 2 and i dont want to damage a nice car like that but for the price i suppose you cant go too far wromg

He said luxobarges not sports car!

Tbh at the budget I'd nearly keep an open mind.

There is very little available for 800€.

Dare I say it but OP could get an MGF for that but it could be a world of pain.

There is an MGF for 900 on dd but you'll have to go into it with your eyes open. Mine was great when it worked

is it hard to drive a auto and to get used to driving an auto?

If you ever driven a bumper car at a carnival you can drive an automatic.

At the money you're talking pretty much all that will be available to you will be an XJ or a W140.

i spotted that last night but i was put of buy the trade sale only bit. as im unsure if he just want to get rid of it fast and cheap or if there is a problem with it the doesnt want to guarantee

    I like your thinking OP.

And driving an automatic is a piece of piss. It'll take you 10 seconds to learn

Well any car of that calibre for that money is going to be the same. Buying of a private individual with no test is the same as buying off that dealer "trade sale".

The only big ass car i can think of is the A8

    1995, 2.8, €590
    View2-19203210.jpeg

    or for €900

    1997, 4.2 Quattro, €900
    View2-19316148.jpeg

Both would need a little work im guessing. But they are what you have looked for just maybe not your style

A bit out of your price range (and drive to england), but worth it just to tell people you drive a Maserati

Lexus GS300 would be my choice at that budget.

Supposedly has a full history, if it does I'd say it was minded and it would go through another NCT with maybe minor work...

Looks nice but seller really is lazy, no miles listed, one picture. 'No time for test' sends out all the wrong signals.

The xj12 I linked you to is nicer, bigger and has been online for at least 9 months. I reckon if you walked in with 700-800 quid you would drive home with it. (Or at least to the nearest topaz :P)

Audi's are for skangers these days

    It's pronounced Jaaaaaag

Have a look at S-Class Jags as well. The big engine ones are really cheap.

I drive a 4.0 litre 96 Sovereign as my daily driver. Not to many about as the tax is prohibitive, more than the cost of the car!

Cheap Jags are available and the straight six is, as mentioned, pretty bulletproof. TThe 4.0 litre is just as economical as the 3.2, at about 28mpg average. EEasy to work on, but expect to have to replace rear shocks/bushes, which is a bit of an undertaking, but do-able as a diy job.

I have a 3.2 donor car, so if you go that route, I have lots of spares, some of which are no good to me due to the engine size.

PS. The Sovereign is the way to go, if possible, spoil yourself!

do jags have a timing belt or chain, and what is the change interval?

The XJ has a chain and it's pretty much a lifetime job. Changing it is a major pain, with the removal of the cylinder head! Later models had problems with plastic tensiones, but the Jag you're looking at would be fine.

would it be off putting for the seller if i arrived and he had to show me how to work the auto?
