Wow; anyone with a fear of heights need not apply. It certainly looks gorgeous, and definitely a film to be enjoyed with as big a screen as possible to capture the scale of it all.

Whilst sci-fi is common enough, spacebound stories equally so, it's rare enough you'll find a film that plays on the notion of space as the bafflingly vast & lonely void that it is. Ordinarily space is just a backdrop, or a small ocean to flit across on a whim, rather than the cruel & dark infinity that Gravity looks to be capturing.

While Im looking forward to this a lot, as a general observation I wish they'd wait to release trailers until two or three months off rather than the half year or longer marketing burn the precedes pretty much every Hollywood film these days. Guess the current situation is the cost that comes with big budgets and stars in 2013, especially for an unfamiliar property.

Still, one director who has been off the scene way too long.

read this story and it will put that trailer into context as in that shít can actually happen

i was excited about this until i found out Sandra Bullock was in it, I really like Cuaron's work but she is enough to put me off anything

I thought I'd never find myself wanting to see a Sandra Bullock film in the cinema but, dammit, I do love me a space flick and this does look great visually.

Can't wait for this! Is there going to be sci-fi elements in this or is it just a straight up astronauts in trouble type film?

If it's any consolation at least you'll be able to watch her float slowly off to die in space :pac:

I'd say it's fairly in the realm of sci-fi going by that trailer. Looks to be a real atmospheric film like Moon, can't wait!

This seems to have been filmed ages ago and is only coming out now later this year

Stretching out to reach things in zero-G: The movie! :pac:

Seriously though, I'd say it'll be good. Looks nice anyway.

It was filmed in the summer of 2011. It was supposed to come out last year but was delayed so as they could convert it to 3D.

Cuarón seems to have had a lot of trouble casting it.

    Minor spoiler
Gravity opens with a continuous 17-minute shot that sets the stage
for the protagonist’s (Bullock) desperate attempt to stay alive and return to Earth

She should have kept it over 50.

A little surprised at the contemporary setting. I'd assumed it was going to play out a little further ahead but if anything that makes their predicament even more tenuous. The mention of Downey jnr. and Jolie being earmarked for this is a little disquieting but nothing can shake my belief that Cuarón will give us something very special again.

There should be no more trailers, that's all anyone needs to know. I know, fat chance but I can't wait to experience all the film has to offer for the first time on the big screen...(in 2D). Roll on October!

That's good then. This has the potential to benefit hugely from decent 3D. If they can get the sense of depth and expanse of space across then it'll have been worth it.

    Looks interesting, really nice visuals.

I cant wait for this, this guy is a very good director, the cast looks good, visuals look good.

Fingers crossed the 3d pans out and it could be an experience.

Children of Men was an absolute classic of a sci fi film, ill be looking forward to more of the same with this, hopefully.

Looking forward to this. I'm done watching trailers though.

Last few films scuppered because of the trailers. Sod that.

Ya I always try and avoid trailers too, they tell the whole plot these days or play with your expectations.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,516 ✭✭✭Outkast_IRE

Have to agree no more trailers for me, i will read the early reviews etc.

I went to star trek the other night after only seeing the original trailer later last year, and i was much better off for it. Found the film much more enjoyable not knowing where it was going.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,074 ✭✭✭✭bnt

This is an early scene from the film, not a trailer as such, and while it looks spectacular, it doesn't tell us anything new ... I think.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

I felt dizzy just watching that; certainly a movie that'll be best watched on the largest screen possible in the cinema.

  • Administrators, Computer Games Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 32,529 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Mickeroo

    That was intense.

Love the lack of bombastic sound effects and instead musical cues for impacts.

Probably the only film this year I want to see in 3D if they get it right, it'd be dizzying.

They played the trailer for this before The World's End last night. Looked amazing on the big screen I have to say.

    Another clip here:

    The visuals really are spectacular.

Pretty intense stuff, beginning to get excited about this. I watched that clip at 1080p on my TV and even at home the sense of scale was overwhelming.

Definitely a movie for the cinema, really does look the biz.

    looking foward to this one.

I read that the "Detached" clip is all one continuous sequence which is quite impressive

If I can, I'm definitely going to catch this in IMAX 3D. It looks immense.

Re: the "Detached" clip being one continuous shot, then I'm not surprised in the least. Cuaron proved he could do an excellent job with them in the excellent Children of Men. That shootout sequence is up there with one of the best moments in cinema in recent memory.

(late in the movie, so obviously spoilers and watch at your own risk)

Even the simple but effective scene below - again, also spoilers.

so is the idea in this that they are left in space without any vehicle, not just that they are knocked away from their vehicle, because all astranauts have maneuvering thrusters

Seems to be. It looks like a Hubble repair mission, so the ISS is a good bit away if that's the case.

Got to see the trailer at the cinema during the week. It certainly looks like it could be worth the effort to attend. Certainly needs to be seen on the big screen.

I am looking forward to seeing this. I loved Children Of Men and this looks like it will be epic.

Some early reviews are appearing online. Metacritic has it at 96% and Rottentomatoes has it at 100%.

I never realized it would be edited together to appear as one long take. This is definitely definitely one to see in IMAX 3D, but can you imagine the motion sickness that will happen in some people?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Gah, and so we reach the point where the first trickle of breathless reviews pushes my expectations up another notch. It's also looking increasingly likely that I may break my boycott of 3D just for this film.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,788 ✭✭✭✭krudler

New trailer out is meant to be spoiler central, gonna try and avoid as much of this as I can, saw the "detached" teaser in the cinema yesterday and it looks spectacular on a big screen.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,013 ✭✭✭Ole Rodrigo

Solid actors and an accomplished technical director with trailers that left me hanging on to the arm rest - am pretty excited tbh.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,660 ✭✭✭COYVB

Saw this earlier in the week and it was hugely disappointing. Tries very hard to be Apollo 13, but instead manages to be nothing more than a disaster movie set in space. Was hugely looking forward to it, but without wanting to give too much away, it's pretty poor

Think this might be the film to make me do a day trip to Dublin to experience my first IMAX 3D! That detached trailer was amazing!

When is this out here? I see it's out in the Sates on Friday. Getting extremely good reviews, getting excited now.
