Anybody know what the women's prison is really like ? I've been reading up on it on behalf of a friend who may be looking at a few months of a sentence .. Just wondering does anybody know people who have experienced the Dochas centre

It is a hell of a lot better than Mountjoy, no overcrowding but you are still locked up. It is a very clean and modern facility, I think the access to educational and other activities is again better than the mens jail.

Afaik the "accommodation" ( for thats what they call it ) is almost like a private flat, the women get their own key and can come and go quite freely within reason. I'm sure the level of freedom depends on the crime that got you there in the first place though.

This documentary should give her a fair idea of what to expect.

:D just to their "room", even the language used is gas, it seems they want to do everything they can to make the inmates feel they are in some kind of hostel rather than a prison.

Some of the young ladies I know who've been there call it the "Ladyjoy".

    In the female prison
    there lie seventy five women
and it's in there with them
    that I'd like to dwell

It's quite a modern prison but overcrowded. Inmates have keys to their rooms and come and go as they like up until a certain time. It's very much a community prison. I visited nearly two years ago and there was a Labrador roaming around the garden area for anybody and everybody to pet/take care of.

With the contrast of the male prison, Dochas is a joke! They have it handy. The "prison" is broken down into "houses", each hold up to ten women, as far as I remember. The individual "rooms" (not cells) are ensuite and look like bedrooms from any one of our homes. They have a computer room, and I remember a notice board in the hall with things like yoga and stuff advertised on it. When we visited, all the women were chilling out in a communal sitting room watching the soaps. It absolutely did not seem like a prison. We had visited the male prison right before hand, where there are proper cells, slopping out, lights out, etc. The women's prison really made me feel sick. The governer at the time ever told us how some of the women call it "Hotel Mountjoy" and some reoffend to come back as it is so handy.

Women criminals should be kept in the same prisons as men, equality and all that...

A hairdressers, all sorts of different courses, some prisoners have an ensuite, some are allowed walk around freely during the day with their own room keys, TVs..
That's all I remember from a school trip there. :P

Not a bad life at all in the women's prison. :P
