My hideous diet!

    Hi all,

My diet is absolutely horrendous. I will put the work in and train 2-4 times a week but eat nothing but rubbish so it's getting me nowhere. Today is my "had enough and gonna change that" day :D (again)

What I usually eat is chocolate, cakes, biccies, some fish, no meat and bread, pasta etc

So far today I have had:

    Skinny vanilla latte
Full fat Greek yogurt with cinnamon and mixed fresh berries
    a sneaky biscuit!

    (gym session)

    4 hard boiled eggs

Dinner will be - salmon and veggies.

It's the snacks which I really struggle with as I snack a lot. Any healthy suggestions? the only ones I can think of are fruit and nuts. Even if I eat 3 big meals I still feel the need to snack (as I am a bottomless pit and constantly hungry!) :o

    Thanks

Hard to tell as your description seems vague, but yoghurt, berries and a biscuit seems like feck all for a meal. Likewise, 4 boiled eggs isn't a meal. If your planning on eating 3 healthy meals a day and avoiding crap, at least make sure the 3 healthy meals are substantial enough that you won't want to eat crap.

True - wasn't very organised this morning as home late so sort of winging it today :D

The Greek yogurt and berries is actually very filling and keeps me well full for breakfast. I realsie that more effort needs to go into the lunch and dinner. Not really into big lunches so usually pick at a few small things - eggs, nuts and fruit. Hard when you are trying to avoid starchy foods and you don't eat meat. Only so much fish I can eat :p

Any suggestions for healthier lunches that might keep me more full? (no meat, carbs, tuna or salads please) Thanks.

    Why none of the above?

You are really ruling out pretty much everything decent there.

Soup? or is that classed as a carb to you?

    Thanks.

I don't eat any meat. I am trying to cut out pasta, bread and rice (as have huge portoin control issues - bit like me and chocolate lol ) Tuna and salad I am just sick to death of at the mo so looking for a change.

Soup is a good idea. No that's not a carb. I can make my own stock, throw in lots of veggies and blitz it all up. Might try that tonight - thanks ;)

    veggies are carbs btw,
so are berries and sneaky biscuits.

Tuna is very versatile and pretty good for you. You could have 3 or 4 dinners from tuna a week and never eat the same thing. Its called the chicken of the ocean for a reason.

What you need to do is learn exactly what each nutrient does, Protein, carbs and fats. What they are and where to get them.

If you find you are snacking, which you say is your biggest problem then you are either not eating correct portions at your meals, or insufficient nutrients.

A well balanced meal of protein and fat will keep you full longer than an all carb one. (veggie soup is all carb)

Remove from the list the ones you do not eat or do not like and start googleing recipes.

I would know 10/15 recipes from the ingredients in my fridge that I could cook with 0 thought.
A further 50-60 with a little inspiration and 100's of dishes that I need to jog my memory for. A quick search on google gives me ideas for upcoming meals on a regular basis, or I go into the tank and experiment with something Ive made before.

You can make snaking healthier by dividing up your meals into snacks. Taking a large tuna salad to work and eating it in 3/4 sittings rather than a smaller one just for lunch will help minimise snacks, not buying chocolate and biscuits will also help eliminate it. the rest is self control.

Salads are great. I don't eat enough of them myself due to being pretty carniverous. Somebody else started a thread here because they were bored of salads. Should be worth a look

    Thanks guys :D

Yeah, I know that fruit and veggies are carbs, but not the type I am trying to avoid (trust me I can eat a whole sliced pan or 4/5 bowls of pasta in one sitting) so that's the reason why I want to try and avoid those type of carbs. There are only so many veggies I can eat..

I like eggs so might try more frittatas etc. Might try and experiment with more salads, I just find them a bit boring tbh. Maybe it is the tuna ;) might try salmon or prawns instead?

Think most of my issue is not being prepared? I generally leave my house at 7pm and some night don't get home until after 11pm so I am too tired to prep anything - hence the eating on the go. Will try and do more at weekends maybe..

    Thanks all.:)

Protein and fat keep you fuller for longer, as the body needs longer to break them down. A sliced pan or 4/5 bowls of pasta is like throwing sticks on a fire, it will burn hot for a while but be cold before you know it.

Eat more protein rich foods, dairy, fish, nuts etc Meat is best, but youre off it.

All good ideas, and like i said tuna is extremely versatile, you are probably just eating it the same way each time.
With the 3 most 'boring' ingredients (minced meat, chicken and tuna) I can make literally thousands of dishes and never eat the same meal twice. Learn how to prepare tuna and it will out last your diet. Prawns and salmon = also good, (tuna is the only fish I can stomach)

yes, you can get most of your prep work donw in an hour on sunday, plan for the whole week and you will be fine.
Figure out what you will eat b.fast each day and make it all at once,
chop and prepare veg and salad for the week and keep it in a box in the fridge.
You can also dip into this box for a hand full when ever you get a craving for a snack.

Alternately, when you cook your evening meal, make 2 portions, eat one and put the other in a box for the next days lunch.

    This is the key.

Buy good healthy food once a week that will last you for the week. This requires planning.

Have a lunchbox or three available to bring tonight's leftovers (or simply a second portion) from dinner to work tomorrow for lunch.

Use your freezer properly. Meats/ Fish and frozen brocolli / cauliflower stacked freezers will mean that even when you are late home from work and have nothing fresh left you can still eat well.

Eating 'properly' on the go is usually horrendously difficult. If you are not prepared, then you will struggle.

Indeed, thats why Im very much in favour of them putting calories on all the menus, it will make things so much easier for when one is "on the go".

mcdonalds do this and KFC (iirc).

Im in favour of it all the same, but in general calories on the menu doesnt mean much.

Educating yourself about what food is and what it does will be better. You can then make informed choices about what you eat.

    Thanks All.

I got home before 10pm last night (rare ;)) so was able to get a bit more organised. I grilled a few salmon fillets and boiled up some spinach and brocolli. I ate half and have the other half for lunch today. Got my Greek yogurt, berries, coconut and cinnamon ready for brekkie too. Just had a banana for a snack so doing okay - so far. I find it hard to be so disciplined but it is just habit. I could easily eat 8-9 bars of chocolate a day (in fact I did so for years and years) so I need to just form new habits.

Yes, protein rich foods are key and i know that. Just need to get more of them into me. Luckily I love salmon, some other types of fish and eggs so that's all good. Haven't eten meat in over 20 years so won't be going there ;)

Was thinking this weekend I might make a few Paleo muffins etc for my freezer (treats/snacks) and freeze a few meals too. I used to spend a few hrs at the weekend cooking and baking and was super organised it's just unfortunately for the last while (and foreseeable future) my time is not my own due to a number of additional responsibilities outside my control....and that's probably when it all went pear shaped .

Probably need to make me and my health more of my priority:o

Dont want to get off topic, but if you're watching the calories and/or trying to stay healthy, you shouldn't be in KFC or Micky D's to begin with. The only way your going to know that the salad dressing in a regular restaurant is 400 calories is if it says it on the menu.

If you rarely get home before 10pm then definitely use sunday to prepare some go to foods for when you get back late. Also, aim for lighter meals if you are going to bed soon after.
