Outboard Gear problem

HI, its a Yamaha OB and was running fine until we came in and when put in reverse it didnt go into gear and then was stuck in neutral. It would rev no problem but would neither engage forward or reverse. I'm sure its something simple but my first time out so am looking for advise as it has to be something simple. Reverse was working initially but we did not use then until we came back in. cant seem to get pics up but ill keep trying

let us know if it's got control cabels or if it's a tiller O/B.... maybe something simple like the cable after coming out of place...

@berghall yes its on cables and it did not pop out either at the throttle or at the engine. I checked this thoroughly. I'm trying to find a pdf manual online that might help me get to the bottom of it.

ok first of all remove the gear oil screw in the lower leg, as it magnatized and any shards of metal on it will indicate a problem in the gearbox itself.

Post your serial number here too..

Your gearshift lever is more than likely behind the bottom carb, does this move up and down when you move it into forward or reverse?
Some Yamahas, the gear shift rods are disconnected somewhere in the leg when removing it, maybe yours is too, so check to see if both the rod down from the engine is conencted to the rod coming up from the gearbox.

It would also help if you could tell us the year, HP and if it's a 2 or 4 stroke.

It would be worthwhile having a look at the safety linkage - the bits that prevent the engine from being started in gear. If they are loose it could prevent the lever from engaging forward/reverse.

I'm going to have to probably take off the centre bottom console as I don't think the gear rod is connected anymore and may have broken. I tried pulling it on the cord but now that seems jammed! One thing after another Hey

It would be also worth getting a full service including impellers done on both engines before you head out on the water, just to be on the safe side you will feel better for it.
