I will be buying my first car soon and I will need a sat nav.

Which would be better - getting a phone app or actually purchasing a sat nav unit?

What model phone have you got?
Personally, I use Google navigation on my smartphone.

Was sometimes poor in areas of poor data connectivity/out foreign, however I noticed the app now lets you download parts of the map to your phone in case you are out of data coverage etc.

I have tried both. I would always rate a dedicated unit as better.

Depends how important it is that you find where you are going and how often and how remote or international those places are ever likely to be.

A phone plus app will do the job.
A dedicated unit will do the job better, and is cheaper than a phone.
