What Irons Do You Play and Why ?

    Lads ,

I'm back playing golf over 2 years now. Got a set of Mizuno JPX 800 at the start, as they claimed they could do everything, high, mid, low handicap.

Very good irons , great to be able to go out and not play much and the help is there.

They can be hot off the face (maybe just me), hard to shape. A Pw can go over 140 yrds mad stuff.

So what irons do you play ?
    Why ?
Did you ever change for your game ?

Bought a set of Dunlop things on sale in heatons and used the hurley grip about 6 years ago. 4 years of getting no where i decided to get a set of beginner irons with a cavity that would rival the boot of my car, Ram sdx 2 and got a lesson to change my grip and give me the basics to work on. 2 years after that i decided an upgrade was needed as i was getting better, joined a club and started practicing more. I got to try out a friends Mizunos. I liked how they looked, they had a square face while the Ram ones had a slight concave curve to the face, it was odd. So i had a look around and bought a set of Adams A4 irons and wouldnt go past them in future. I dont get much spin (possibly dont make the right strike for spin or the ball i use doesnt have much spin rate) but i do get alot of height and the Hybrid that comes with them is extremely easy to hit.

Currently on Mizuno MP-53. They've a nice balance between forgiveness and still looking a bit like a golf club.

I'd actually half like to try the JPX but I've heard things like you mentioned above that they're very hot off the face so couldn't see myself using them. Pity they don't still make a forged MX iron. I remember years ago switching from TP9 blades to the MX-20 and the difference was night and day. If they still made something like the MX-20 or MX-25 I'd definitely give them a try.

    Mizuno mp 30
Why ? because they are the only ones I have
I ll play anything forged with a straight leading edge a nice top line
My wish list is mizuno mp 57 5-pw with 3-4 in h 4 series, think next year when I have my game in order I ll get a fitting done :) and get new irons

Mp53 here too. I had titleist ap1 which would be the jpx in all but name. I found myself loving if I was gap wedge distance(vokey) and hating being pw distance.
Basically I preferred the feel off the cb type clubs. In fairness the 53's are more forgiving from 7 to 3 than say the titleist cb's too.
I have put a hybrid iron type in to replace the 3 too, it's more like the ap1 3 iron tbh. Just a little easier to get airborne

Started off with Wilson progressive forged, 20 year old clubs this year, still have them, the're up on adverts, I think I'll take it down, I don't really want to sell them. Considering I'm 28, these clubs are nearly as old as me and still dynamite.

Stopped playing for years, got back , some Wilson GI cavities, graphite shafts, they were very long.

Got handicap down, Bought a set of Wilson FG tours ( Great bargain from Neckedit on here) forged irons, DG S300. Absolutley love these clubs. Wilson make great forged clubs, they just lost the marketing war.

Great choice by the OP on JPX pro's for beginners. There is a forged set made (JPX pro) which probably are less flyer like off the face, maybe lofts are higher, they would suit all HC's imo.

If I had the money, I'd love to get a set of brand new Mizuno MP 58's.

Had a set of Wilson DI 9's but changed them for Taylormade Burners 2.0's a year and half ago.... very happy with them, look and feel good in the hand, easy to hit....:)

Exactly the same sequence, went from Wilson's to TM Burners 2.0 almost 2 years ago. Great clubs - long and easy to hit but possibly not as much feel as you might get from other clubs.

Went for TMs after getting a fitting by a professional with no allegiance to one particular club manufacturer.

ping s57s but thinking of changing to mizuno mp64s

went from titleist 690mbs to ping s59s as i wasnt playing enough to consistently hit the blades, then got a sweet deal on the s57s from our pro a couple of yrs back. hit the mp64s a few weeks back & really liked them so will hopefully move to them pretty soon. have the fi-hi 2,3 & 4 iron since last year and really like them.

Playing Cleveland CG16 tours for over a year. Had real problems with my irons before, so went and tried a lot of game improving irons (Callway x22, Di7's, TM R7's etc etc) could not hit any of them consistently.
Then seen the CG16's in a pro shop and fell in love, something about a small head gives me real confidence and I hit these great. Very low center of gravity so nice for firm links courses, distance is just right (PW 115), long irons are actually easy to hit. The only drawback is they are very easy to draw, if I'm on the right side of the fairway, I physically have to keep the face open or a huge 30 yard hook can surface from a slightly closed stance.

    Mizuno MX-23.

On holidays in Jersey CI saw the Mizunos at a car boot sale-some lad had to get off the island fast and was getting rid of his house contents. Cost me £100 sterling in 09. Do I like them? I loved them, but I'm getting bored with them lately. They seem dead in comparison to the way they were.
    Hadn't realised I have them so long:eek:

I currently have 2 sets, Cleveland cg16 tours and Wilson fg tour v2's. I have a problem though..... Cleveland built my clubs with spec sheet from a fitter here. I played them for almost 2 seasons then decided to change. The wilsons were built to spec but then I discovered that all the clevelands were 1/2" too long. So all this tine I've been adjusting my swing around clubs that were ill fitting. Its annoyed me but now I need to decide, do I get clevelands cut down to size or do I get wilsons plugged to the length I'm now used to playing?

    Mizuno MP-32's & before that Mizuno MX-20's.

Just love the feel of them & I found them very workable. Am thinking of changing to a more forgiving set though, due to a bad neck injury which happened in 2009. Will probably stick with Mizuno if I can.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,976 ✭✭✭whizbang

I never really liked the burners, just didn't send the ball where i felt it should have been.
MX-25's were stiff shaft, not right for me
CG4's for the boot of the car, nice feel, reliable, then tried MP57's.
I think those things taught me how to hit a ball! but just too unreliable (and worn out).
Now have the CG 16's and wont be changing soon.
    God bless adverts.ie

Started out 3 years ago with Wilson deep red.
Changed last year to Nike vr pro cavity

Really like them, sharp looking and not too chunky.
They work for me and when they don't put the ball where they were suppose to its my fault not the equipments.

MP33's the most blade type iron you could ever own. There's so little bounce itsuits my big divot swing. Small sweet spot but when you hit it you know all about it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,711 ✭✭✭spacecoyote

Playing mizuno mx 200 at the mo. A few years old now and maybe due an upgrade as my swing wouldn't look quite the same as it did back then. Plenty of lessons & handicap gone from 22-12.

Lovely club though, good balance of forgiveness & some workability though not as much as the mp series irons I'd imagine.

Considering a move to player style irons. at last lesson I had I suggested this to pro & he said to consider the tm rocketbladez tour irons. Said he'd demo'd them himself & thought thy were superb, brought in his dispersion massively. More a muscle back than a blade, which is probably a more sensible option for me.

Think I'll stick with the current irons for rest of the season & look at a potential change at the end of the year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 138 ✭✭liverbear

Mizuno MP 30s. Why? can't justify spending the money to upgrade

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 255 ✭✭BOB81

Playing mizuno jpx-825 pro irons which I got fitted for at start of the year and extremely happy with them, nice clean looking club and still pretty forgiving. Had Wilson ci7 irons before that and mizuno mx-17 in the more distant past. Decided I would go back to mizuno this time (prob change irons every 4 years or so), have not been disappointed. this was the first time I got fitted for clubs, although I enjoyed the experience, it has since underlined that my swing flaws won't be fixed by a shiny new club!

I think there is a certain player that has a got a problem, player who are from say 12 down to 9 (approx). Most have not played lower handicap irons/tour irons , it hard to know if the benefits of these clubs outweigh the difficulty of use.
I think that a realistic view is that you will have times when you wont play or practice, you need a bit of help to go out and play when you take brakes.

dunno. I was playing off 5 at the time of my fit and they were what was recommended.

I went from 5 out to 8 while adjusting to my new irons and then down to 4 last year now that I am used to them. Playing off 5 again now but I still fancy myself to get back to 4 and lower with these irons

I love how I hit the ball with them and I hit the ball as far as I want to hit the ball (e.g. 7-iron 170 yards )

Though when it comes to the technology of the club ?

that's not what interests me. I'm more interested by the results, not whats going on in the background and these clubs work for me.

Fair point, definitely a bit of ego involved..."I've a lower handicap, ergo, I require a better set of players clubs"

But could I use the existing set I have & get lower, yeah probably (shiny set of new clubs look so good though :D ).

    Definitely a balancing act.

Pretty sure, if I remember correctly, from my reading of "Dream On" that the lad used a set of cavity back improver irons and shot a level par round, and as Ricky says above, its about results at the end of the day!

I know a scratch player using cleveland cg16's
They wouldn't be seen as the most player type irons out there but he uses what works for him

Started with TM Burner 2.0's after trying out a few different makes. Loved these and they were very forgiving, but i didn't get much feel with them. They also had a regular shaft, so i found i was ballooning some of my irons.

My buddy picked up a set of R11's with the stiff KBS shafts last summer and i loved the look of them. Tried them out for a round, and when the R11's were on sale in halpennys just before christmas for €379 i had to pick them up. Delighted with them since i changed and i reckon the different shaft has made a big difference too. They did take a little while to get used to as they are not as forgiving as the burners.

    Wilson Staff FG62 4-pw and Cleveland CG16 53 & 58
I love blades and just can't get comfortable looking at anything else. I've had these irons for about 2 years and doubt whether I'll change anything for a good while yet. The wedges are probably going to need a reboot soon but I'll delay as long as possible.

I had a set of PING g2s that I got second hand about 8 years ago or so. They were my first adult set and they were custom fitted for the previous owner so they were too upright and too long for me with grips that were too thick but I don't think it really made all that much difference, I did quite well with them.

Just felt it was time for a change about a year ago. Had my eye on the Mizuno JPX 800s and was hoping to get them eventually but was concerned about the fact that I'd also have to get a new sand wedge and 4 iron as they weren't part of the set.

Then while browsing the Halpenny Golf website I noticed a price drop in the Nike VR Pro cavity irons which I hadn't previously taken much notice of. Then while looking at the website I got a text from them for 15% off all stock that day. Went straight down and gambled on them with minimum research and was starting to regret it until I used them. No regrets, I'm delighted with them. And have my SW and 4 iron to boot.

    AP2's.

Fondness for Titleist (for some reason). Feel great when you hit them right and I find they are more forgiving than the reviews you read when you hit a bad one.

Was in a golf shop last week and saw a set of Mizuno MP-69s. Without doubt the nicest golf clubs I have ever seen.

Hitting them might be another days work though :-)

Mizuno MP57, very forgiving for a forged iron. beautiful feel, look, weight. Would take a lot to move me away from Mizuno.

Using a set of ping i5's that i got 2nd hand off a mate. Having only ever used an oul beginner set previously I wouldnt have a breeze of which brand or club to go for if i was to upgrade. And from reading this thread i feel i would like an upgrade.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,120 ✭✭✭✭Seve OB

Taylor made forged 300 series TP Irons. Why? Cause I got them free. They were second hand but hardly ever used.

I had been using "RAM" hand me downs from my Da since I was a kid, so probably made them older than me. They were blades and I liked them but knew it was time to change them. Grooves were worn to nothing. I was actually going for a custom fit (booked in and all) with view to buying a new set when I got the present.

The difference was immence. Dropped from 19 handicapper to 13 in a few of years, but they felt so different. Gave me much better accuracy. Putting was still dire!

Also have in the bag a 200 Series 3 wood, a R540 Driver 9.5 degree, both pressies and brand spanking new from the same guy. And for the life of me can't think of the 5 wood I use. Maybe R7 or something like that. (Chrimbo / birthday pressie from the wife)

Actually now feel a bit like Ricky now, was it 200 series Irons and 300 series 3 wood? V steel is ringing in my ear for reason also....

Also have a Taylor made 58 Degree (I think) lob wedge (don't know the name on this one either). present to myself, took a long time to master and still not 100% there, though I am ok with it.

Using an Odyessy 2 ball white hot putter (prize credits in the pro shop) and is definately a lot hotter than what I had before. I think putting is the one seriously individual aspect of the game and really anything from the cheapest to the best and most expensive can do the trick for you, just what works for the indiviual.

    Ping G5

I remember (long long time ago) seeing the Ping Eye 2 irons and just loved the way they were so different from anything else around at the time. The G5s were the closest when I decided to try Pings and they looked like "real" Pings to me so I bought them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,517 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

    What Irons: Titleist 735 CM
Why: Picked them up cheap on Adverts

The "why I shouldn't be using them" column is another story... :o

My intro clubs were Callaway Big Bertha 2008 irons... they would suit my game more than the 735's but I just can't get the feel of them anymore. They are on the chunky side of chunky.
Saying that, I have dropped the 4 & 5 iron into the bag of late as I find I can hit them better than the 735's.

Have been flirting with the idea of a getting club that fits somewhere in between

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 158 ✭✭katnia

I'm genuinely surprised at the amount of Mizuno users on this thread. I know they make good quality clubs but they are not a brand that seem to put themselves out there like some other brands and not a brand you will see stocked in all pro shops.

For what it's worth, I'm using the Ping G25 Irons, very nice they are too....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,939 ✭✭✭Russman

    You're dead right.
I remember when I switched from TP9 blades to MX-20 as I mentioned earlier, that I went from 6 h/cap to 3 in about 6 weeks (seriously !). Now it wasn't all down to the irons in fairness, but I'm sure I got away with many slight (or not so slight !:D) mish1ts that would have been really punished with the blades.

What prompted me to try them was that my father had an old set of T-Zoid XV cavity backs and I tried them out for a few rounds and just found them sooo easy to hit, it seemed like all you had to do was show the club to the ball and it'd go.

Bottom line, IMHO, use as much forgiveness as you can bear the look of, and take every bit of help you can from equipment. You certainly don't need to get "players" irons, either when you lower your handicap, or to go about lowering your handicap. Look at Monty winning Order of Merit year after year with Callaways or Westwood with his Pings.

Slightly controversial statement coming up........"workability" is, to an extent, overrated. The modern ball is designed to go straight(er) and doesn't move around like the balatas of old. Truth be told, we should probably all be using cavity backs and leave the ego at home :):)

    Titleist 695mb. Project X Shafts.

Why? They are not as unforgiving as people might think. They feel brilliant and they look brilliant. I will be upgrading in the next year, more than likely to the 712mb's, I will try the AP2's though as I have heard good things.
