One of the most fiercely competitive matches in World football tonight with the Superclásico, the Buenos Aires derby.

The Observer previously ranked the Superclásico at the top of their list of "50 sporting things you must do before you die", saying that "Derby day in Buenos Aires makes the Old Firm game look like a primary school kick-about."

Boca have had a poor season domestically thus far and sit 18th with 9 points from 11 games.

River are in 3rd, with 21 points from 11 games and are challenging for the title.

This will be River's first games back at Bombonera since their first ever relegation in 2011.

    Boca Juniors team news:

    Out: None
In doubt: Ribair Rodríguez, Franco Sosa, Juan Román Riquelme, Agustín Orión

Expected lineup - Agustín Orión; Leandro Marín, Matías Caruzzo, Guillermo Burdisso, Nahuel Zárate; Pablo Ledesma, Federico Bravo, Walter Erviti, Juan Sánchez Miño; Lautaro Acosta, Santiago Silva.

    River Plate team news:

    Out: Martín Aguirre, David Trezeguet
In doubt: Ariel Rojas, Adalberto Román, Ramiro Funes Mori, Germán Pezzella

Expected lineup - Marcelo Barovero; Gabriel Mercado, Leandro González Pirez, Eder Álvarez Balanta, Leonel Vangioni; Carlos Sánchez, Cristian Ledesma, Leonardo Ponzio; Manuel Lanzini; Juan Manuel Iturbe, Rogelio Funes Mori.

Good idea for a thread. I watch a bit of the Uruguayan Primera when I get a chance. Mainly Peñerol and Nacional who just happen to play each other tonight in the Clásico. Both clubs have had astounding success, with a combined 90 titles out of 108 titles in the Primera, with Peñerol shading it with 46 championships to Nacionals 44. Nacional however, have won the title the last 2 years in a row so are catching their rivals.

The current record for both teams in the Clásico is:

    Peñerol: 77

    Nacional: 67

    Draw: 67

    HT in Buenos Aires. 1-1.

River scored after 44 seconds (fastest ever in this fixture), great header by Lanzini. They dominated most of the half too and should have scored a couple more. Boca equalised though after 40 mins, good finish by Silva.

I still expect River to go on and win this. Iturbe has been very dangerous and Boca don't really have enough defensively to cope with him. Set up well for the second half though.

2-0 Peñerol in the Clásico at half time.

Have been all over Nacional, and had scored within 3 minutes through tireless midfielder Antonio Pacheco. Former Juventus striker Marcelo Zalayeta doubled their lead in the 18th. Nacional have had a few half chances, but unless there's a massive turnaround after half time, there's only going to be one winner here.

With regard to 50 sporting things to do before you die I did none like I didnt have a letter published in the Observer but I had a letter published in The Irish Times with regard to the LOI. Thats just as good in my book.

And I have run the 100 Metres in Olympia in Greece the original site of the Olympics which isn't mentioned.

When I was in Chile people were very interested in Ireland and in LOI football. It should be when every second street is named O'Higgins (and one of their clubs).

Corinthians just beat Sao Paulo on penalties to face Santos in the Paulista final. Pretty sh*te few days for SPFC after the disappointing result against Atletico MG in the Libertadores.

    Lucio is a tit.

Burdisso sent off for Boca with a straight red in the 12th minute of stoppage time.

Finishes 1-1. Boca were much better in the second half though there wasn't many clear cut chances.

Definitely 2 points dropped for River.

Game was like a street fight rather than a game of ball. Lungers going in everywhere. Red card at the end.

    3-0 Peñerol final score.

Nacional came out after half time and looked the better side for 5-10 minutes but couldn't get the goal to give themselves the momentum. Their improvement petered out and Peñerol took control. A mistake from the referee allowed them to add to their tally from the penalty spot, despite replays showing the ball hit the head of the defender instead of the arm, which is what it looked like from the ref's perspective.

All in all a dominant display from Peñerol, who now leapfrog their rivals into 3rd place behind River Plate in 2nd and Defensor Sporting in 1st.

    Why so?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,554 ✭✭✭✭Oat23

    Why so?

Because he's old and slow, Bernard was giving him the run around and he lunged into him while already on a yellow card, getting a straight red for it. Atletico scored 2 after and won the first leg. Sao Paulo were dominating the game until that point and are probably out now.

I thought is might be useful to have a thread on the goings on in South American Football. Include anything related to the domestic leagues as well as the Copa Libertadores.

    Tables and Fixtures:
    Brazil Serie A
    Argentinian Primera División
    Chilean Primera División
    Uruguayan Primera División
    Paraguayan Division Profesional
    Colombia Primera A
    Ecuadorian Primera A
    Peruvian Primera División
    Bolivian LFPB
    Venezuelan Primera División
    Mexican Liga MX

    Copa Libertadores
    Copa Sudamericana
    Mexico is in North America.

I haven't seen him play since his Inter days. Both Inter and Juve released him though so I wouldn't say he's up to much these days.

I'll be watching the second leg on Wednesday night.

Mexican clubs play in the Copa Libertadores (South American Champions League) so no reason for the domestic league not to be in this thread.

    Actually Central America.

    Actually Central America.

Actually it's part of North America :D

Different continents, but makes sense why the Liga MX is in here.

Yeah, this was my reasoning. I of course know that Mexico isn't in South America.

Tie over now. Jo scores for Atletico 18 minutes in.

I have the match on TV in HD and the bloody bugs flying across the screen keep scaring the crap out of me :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,839 ✭✭✭Jelle1880

Watching it as well, Atletico play some decent football.

Also, you'd think they already won the thing the way they celebrated :D

Anytime I've seen Atletico Mineiro in this competition, they're a tad physical..

How did that not go in for Sao Paulo..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,554 ✭✭✭✭Oat23

    Ganso -_-

It just sat there and he managed to kick the air.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,554 ✭✭✭✭Oat23

    2-0, Jo again.

Well that's that. Time for bed.

    3-0, Tardelli :(

    Very impressive win tonight.

The champions league for North/Central America must be very weak if the Mexican clubs are taking part in the Copa Libertadores?

Mexican teams play in the Concacaf Champions League also.

How do they decide which teams play in each competition?

I'm 95% sure that the best teams (league winners, runners up etc) go into the Concacaf Champions League, and the next best non-qualifiers go the Copa Libertadores route.

Looked it up on wiki there, it's pretty much what you say. A little more complicated though with the format of their league, apertura & clausura, regular seasons followed by playoffs to decide the winners & the timing/format of the libertadores (run in the one year, not across two)

I'll use a season as it's easier to explain

    12/13 season
the top 3 of the apertura regular season qualify to the libertadores 2013, or next placed team if any of the top 3 are in the Concacaf CL (12/13)
The winners & runners up of the apertura playoff's qualify for the Concacaf CL 13/14
and the winners & runners up of the clausura playoff's qualify for the Concacaf CL 13/14

so at times they'll have the apertura winners in the libertadores, like this season Tijuana won it & are in the last 16

also i don't think a Mexican team can represent CONMEBOL at the club world cup if they win it, it's goes to their best placed team

Following a Brazilian Cup game here, Atlético Paranaense (Serie A) away to América de Natal (Serie B).

2-4 and it's only half time :pac:

    0-1
    0-2
    0-3
    1-3
2-3 (I have money on Paranaense winning, bricks were shat at this point)
    2-4 right before HT

I see Bohemians drew Corinthians in the Milk Cup. Might be a good fixture to attend.

I hope its not on at a neutral venue

Cracker from Riquelme to give Boca the lead in Brazil against Corinthians (2-0 up on agg now).

Corinthians should really be winning this, should have had a penalty and they had a perfectly good goal ruled out.

Fernando Arce scored a sweet goal last night for Tijuana in their big win against Palmeiras

Isnt it amazing how Pato has fallen so much. At one stage he was tipped to be better than Kaka in his prime but now playing his soccer back in brazil and barely starting. Missed an easy chance tonight too.

Injuries really ****ed him up big time

Anyone watching Santos v Flamengo at the moment? Decent game so far. Not sure how much more we'll see of Neymar at Santos.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,554 ✭✭✭✭Oat23

I've missed the Brasileiro, so end-to-end.

The rebuilt Mane Garrincha looks great too.

FAO anyone with access to the Hotbird 13E satellite, TV Globo is now FTA and shows Brasileiro :)

No romantic finish for Neymar in what is presumably his final game for Santos. Finished 0-0, despite being a very open game with a good few chances.

What has happened with Boca this season ?

Getting absolutely annihilated by Newell's (granted, they're a man down), 4-0 now.

And they're playing them again in the Copa Libertadores on wednesday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,839 ✭✭✭Jelle1880

This tied the game on aggregate, then ET didn't produce any goals so on to penalty kicks.

America win the Liga MX, the coach was pretty happy it seems:

This Copa match is your typical Argentine match in the league, very poor standard in that league

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,081 ✭✭✭ollie1

Yea pretty poor alright and pretty boring match as well. Cant believe Riquelme is still playing he must be ancient by now.

Love Riquelme but he can't half bottle big penalties.

you could see he was going to miss that peno

    terror on his face

    edit

    another miss

those short run ups are a sign they are going to miss
