Dehydration

    Hi there,

I'm wondering if someone can help me out with this really annoying problem.

I have a problem with what I think is dehydration. I regularly wake up feeling like i'm actually poisoned with it and I feel like I can't get enough water into me. I then drink about 3 pints and end up feeling sick.

Take this morning. Had the dreaded feeling again. Yesterday, I spent 30 mins doing cardio in the gym and had a sauna afterwards. Drank almost 3 litres of water yesterday. Didn't consume a lot of salt but enough. After I woke up this morning, I had 2 pints of water and went for a 48m run. I'm in bits with the dehydration now and i've had about 4 pints of water since the run.

Does anyone know what I can do to help this? It's really getting on my nerves. I usually drink warm water as I heard that its better metabolised by the body when warm... Help! Thanks.

    some ideas
    - have a glass of water when you go to sleep, another one when you get up, but don't overdo it
    - weight yourself before/after the run/other activity to see how much water you lost (and apparently you need to drink 1.5x that amount, but not in one go)
    - if you're worried about mineral/salt loss when sweating a lot, maybe try something like High5 Zero - http://highfive.co.uk/product/hydrate/zero or add a pinch of salt to the water
    - don't drink too much water at once

Thanks a million for your advice. I'm beginning to think it's to do with lost salt.. I'll have a look into that product your recommended. Would something like Dioralyte be effective as well?

I see it has also glucose as an ingredient. In general I avoid any carbs before/during exercise, but may be OK for you.

    Also this may help: http://www.urinecolors.com/dehydration.php

See your GP, unexplained thirst is one of the initial symptoms of diabetes.

i agree with the above post - your body could be craving water because it wants to get something out of you. Don't get tunnel vision and assume this is just to do with exercise and water consumption, look at every aspect of your life.

Oh, and i know from experience that it's not uncommon for your feelings of thirst and hunger to get mixed up so you could be energy deficient rather than dehydrated.

Sounds like are drinking too much water to be honest. I'd advise you to go to your doctor if you are thirsty all the time

why do you think it's too much? I was drinking up to 4l a day (when I last counted)... it really depends on your activity level, how much you sweat, etc. I would drink 1.5-2l just during one training session in the evening (playing sport for 3h).

anyway, Wurly, if you're worried, see your GP

3 litres yesterday and a litre this morning before your run sounds like a lot. Headaches can also be a symptom of water intoxication.

    I'd talk to a GP.

4 pints of water after a 50 min run (and 2 pints of water before it) sound's insane unless you do your runs in the Sahara

moderation with water could be a problem your having. you should drink water throughout the day instead of flooding your system when you feel dehydrated.
you could get a 2 litre bottle mark hours(1pm,2pm etc.) on it at every 200ml that way you wont forget to drink it.
    good luck with the training
