7lb Weight Gain in 1 Day - Help Please

    Hi Folks

Dont usually frequent this area of boards but i imagine i will be here more often then not over the summer.

Anyway My Weight History: 3 years ago i weighed in at 24st 7lb. Through a serious calorie controlled diet i managed to lose 5 stone the first year, 3 stone the second and 2stone over the past 2 years. Last week i weighed in at 14stone 7lb which for someone of my build is apparently considered relatively normal - i am 6ft 4, with broad shoulders - i have also been increasing my muscle mass by lifting weights and have noticed relative gains in what i can lift, especially in the last 6 months.

PROBLEM: I recently finished an undergraduate thesis and decided i would reward myself. I had a cheat day where i through caution to the wind and ate a full pizza followed by a generous helping of ice cream - that was yesterday. I now weigh 14st 13lb... ive browsed the net and there are various theories for sudden weight increase but none make much sense

    3500 calories = 1lb of fat - i ate no more than 4000 calories - how could i have POSSIBLY gained 7lb? :(:eek::mad::(:eek:confused:

I had intended to take a couple of days off and relax... maybe not eat a couple of pizza's but at least relax for a while... maybe a steak and chips

have i damaged my metabolism from dieting - please folks! i need a bit of advice on this as i am mentally exhausted from college work, and now i am seriously feeling depressed about my supposed weight gain? could it be glycogen or something! HELP!

    Definitely not an actual gain.

When you're eating fairly well and suddenly you load your body with dodgy carbs and sugar and one hell of a lot of salt your body retains fluid.

You say a seriously calorie controlled diet? Just how seriously controlled.
I lost a similar amount of weight but it has taken me to now to really get my eating right both in terms of how much and the kinds of food I eat. And I eat a hell of a lot more than I used to!

It may be worthwhile checking out what sort of calories you should be eating to lose/maintain depending on your calorie goals. You are correct in some ways, eating at a calorie intake below what your body needs can affect metabolism. Mine was definitely wrecked and still is a bit slow I'd say but i've been gradually upping from 1300cals to 1700cals (gross) and have lost and not gained. I do a lot of exercise though and will probably continue to up it slowly.

here's a site for checking the cals you need
    www.scoobysworkshop.com/calorie-calculator/

But as for the gain, give it a few days, drink plenty of water to deal with the retention and eat cleanly and see where you are in a week.

Water weight/food weight. The only time to weigh yourself is first thing in the morning after you go to the toilet. Any other time and you are weighing yourself + whatever water you have drank and food you have eaten.
You have not put on 7 pounds of fat in a day.

Although now that I say it. Its defo possible if you were previously depriving yourself of carbs for a while then had a big carby meal and lots of water.

    Its not fat though.

Yes, now. Don't weigh yourself at 10 to eleven at night. Weigh yourself in the mornings after you use the bathroom.

Your weight will fluctuate day by day depending on a few factors. I would advise against weighing yourself every day, as things like this blip will wreck your head. Once a week, in exactly the same circumstances is enough, really.

You haven't put on the weight, you're just still full of stodge and water. Go back to eating clean and you'll be back to normal. Be careful right now, as you mention being exhausted. This is a time your body will crave sugary/ carb laden food as an energy boost. That coupled with being depressed over your apparent weight gain, could make you say sod it, and binge.

Could be just water weight, maybe your sodium intake went up without you realising. Do you put salt on your food?

Weighing scale could have been off. Mine takes a while to register the real weight

Or maybe you were wearing heavier shoes :p

Thanks for the responses folks - Im back on a clean diet with exercise and seem to be approaching my original weight before the obvious cheat day, but i am still over by about 4lb... i suppose the main thing i was trying to ascertain was how long does it take to actually gain weight - i often hear guys in the gym talking about cheat days, so i reckoned i was over due one... I imagined, knowing that 3500calories = 1lb fat, that it would be almost impossible to put on weight unless i ate an INHUMAN amount of food - unless i ate 7000calories, i would have thought putting on over 1lb of fat would be next to impossible

You can not physically put on 7lbs of fat in 24 hours. It is impossible. What you put on was water weight due to the high salt/sugar content of what you were eating. Eat cleanly for the next few days and it will soon right itself. Well done on your amazing weight loss by the way.

That happened to me, weight was going down gradually when I was low/no-carbing then I went a bit mad one Sunday and weighed myself the next day, was up 7 pounds, within 5 days I was down 10. :pac:
