I've been training in Westwood for 3+ years now, bit expensive but great place all the same

My problem is with the dumbells, the heaviest is 50kg which was fine when I first started but I've gained a lot of size since and looking for somewhere that has 60s 70s 75s etc

    Thanks

Blackrock Gym & Raw spring to mind

What would you be using them for?

    Pressing?
    Or DB rows etc?

I'm using Ben Dunnes at the moment and even though I'm using DB's that are a lot smaller I'm quickly going up in size. Their max is 30kgs and very soon they'll be too small for me. I think Energie Fitness have bigger ones as well.

Been there before. No proper lockers, opening time never seemed to be set in stone, closes randomly, weights looked older than myself and very hard to get parking

Don't get me wrong I like old school and all but that place was just depressing and I wouldn't go back no matter how heavy the dumbells

Need 55s for overhead press/incline press

    60s for flat bench press

And 75s for farmers walk, trap work etc

DB rows are an ego lift, much prefer cable row so would need a gym with a good cable pull

parking can be a hassle alight, but after 7 free on street parking, its been done up in recent years and ye some of the weights are around since the 30's but they still weight the same ;), maybe its not the place for you tho

I'm taking part in the strongman and although the daddy dumbells isn't an event for the juniors this year I'd still like to train for it, builds great shoulder strength for the log lift and its something different, but you need at least 60s cause 40s are far too light, I'm not interested in doing 10 reps, want a weight where I can only manage 6

True, but I try to be finished my workout by 7

For sure it was a nice experience to see some proper lifters, strong maxs and I even set some PBs while I was there

But it was almost too serious, seemed to be no comradery

No one around to give you a spot, not that I needed one, but its nice to be nice. Hell at the gym I'm at now I always offer spots to people I see looking nervous under the bar lol

Trying to defuse the meathead stereotype

    Nice work.

I'll see what RAW is like these days. I heard they have a tractor tyre. Any atlas stones?

    I couldn't go to Blackrock, I drive a Mitzy

    30kg? Max??

If I was you I'd just bring some duct tape to the gym with me and stick a 5kg plate on each side

No atlas stones... youd need to go out to animal barbell in coolmine or possibly universal in finglas for atlas stones. There's a tyre and farmers walk handles and a plate loaded log but that's it as far as strongman equipment really... Dumbbells to 70kg, a couple axle bars etc.

I'm going to pop into Universal this weekend to see what it's like

But if I don't like it ill be in RAW by next week

Time to get toned for the summer (not serious)

    Thanks for the reply

sounds like you might need a specialist gym rather than a general commercial one. I know there are strongman clubs around maybe they have their own gyms or can reccomend somewhere for you.

I would imagine that this is an issue for a lot of people that do strongman events.

I know. James Fennelly has a very impressive set up down in Kilkenny. But that's the problem, those kind of gyms are all down the country. Cities and commercialized gyms will always be linked together.

    Thanks for the input

Eoin Graham, Lalas (2nd WSM), and Wilczyński? train there.

Universal in Glasnevin/Finglas should also have loadable DBs.

It can be a pleasing lift for a young lad with an ego to feed, most go too heavy.

Ironside gym in Blackrock seems to be very Strongman friendly. Fairly sure they have heavy dumbbells, farmers walks, tyres etc.. I also recall seeing a picture of some Atlas stones on their facebook page. It may be worth checking out...

DB rows and Barbell rows. Anytime I see it done its too quick, a lot of momentum is used, no contraction except on the elbow maybe lol

And for some reason even the newbies come in the first day and row the 35kgs straight away

If I do them ill use 27.5 and hold on top. You are working your rear delts after all with DB rows, a reasonably small muscle compared to others

Ill check it out just to see what it's like but it's a bit far away tbh
