Saw a "drive off" in car park

    Hey guys,
I was walking out of work on lunch today and i heard a "tip" in the car park, i looked over and saw a guy scrap the side of another car. He reversed out and stopped, got out to check the damage then parked across the road from where he was, got out and walked away.
So I figured, there must not be any damage done, when he was gone i went over to take a look, and the was a bit of damage done. The back passanger door had a nice scrape along with the rear quarter panel. So left a note on the car that was hit with the guys reg and a description of his car, along with my number. I took a snap of the guys car who did the damage as well, showing the reg and scrape on his bumper. What do you reckon will be the story with this? I dont really fancy getting involved but id lose the rag if it happened to me (it did once, i lost the plot) I went back to see if the note was still there or did the guy leave his own note, he didnt and his car was gone. I have a pic of the damage if the MODS dont mind me posting?

    You did a great job.

    Fair play.

And if more people did like you there would be alot of things in this country that wouldnt go unanswered for.

Fair play. If someone did the same for you you'd be thankful.

Well done for what you did.

People who damage other's cars and drive away are just ****ers.

It was the right thing to do OP fair play.

Well done OP! I returned to my car one day, big scrape on the wing and a note on the window. The car drove away but it was witnessed and some good soul did what you did. Thanks to that note the person confessed when contacted by the Guards and their insurance took care of the damage. It would have cost me over €600 otherwise.

    Well done again.

    This is the damage

    fair play OP.
I'd be afraid the guy that done the damage comes back before the other guy, seen your note and removed it.

For that reason i would go to the garda and ask them to contact the damaged cars owner with the details of the other guy so that he can persue it.

Or do a walk by later to see if any or both of the cars are still there.

You should have left a note on the offenders car too....with the number of the local driving school.

Good work OP. This happened me a few weeks ago. Huge scrape on my drivers door and no note, no witnesses. Had to get the whole door resprayed. The whole car had only been resprayed last year

Having been on the recieving end of such an act, I would say that by right this prick should have his car confiscated and crushed, preferably with him still in it.

Those pics sem a bit odd, how did the BMW cause such a scrape so low down, well below it's own bumper, and why is there white paint on the tyre when the BMW is black?

    Whats odd about it,

There is clearly black all over it, and the silver from the car he scraped went on to his bumper and then scraped off it on to the other cars wheel.

    Its clearly his damage.

Fair play OP, it's a tough decision to be witness.

Same thing has happened twice to myself with no note.
So glad somebody had the balls to do it.

Fair play op, my car has got a few dents on it and the paint from another car over the last while and it is driving me crazy. I try to keep my car in good condition and then people just drive into it and say nothing.

If I ever catch anyone hitting my car they will know about it I can tell you that.

I'm not doubting what happened, but still struggling to see how the height of the BMW front bumper can cause a scrape so low down.

The BMW is a lower car, pretty simple in my eyes, plus the OP witnessed it and if his game was to name and shame why would he blank the reg ?

Well done OP. I came back to my year old C3 one day and found the tailgate smashed in. It looked like a jeep with a spare on the back door did it, no paint damage just the metal mashed in.

700 quid to repair, it still hasn't been repaired. It pi55ed me off for ages, it was the 1st dent on the car.

A BMW has a very low bumper.

It does, but its the very top of the very low bumper

maybe the carpark is on a slight incline as well. To the detective: how on earth did you know it was a Skoda?

My wife did something similar about 3 years ago.
After scraping a parked car she went into the adjacent pub to find the owner & fess up.
As she was driving my car at the time instead of her own both our insurances were hit & we both lost 2 years off our no claims bonus.
Both claims were left open due to lazy paperwork so we could only renew with our existing insurers who pounded both of us.

If it happened again I'm not sure either of us would be so honest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,269 ✭✭✭Stallingrad

I'm staying up here on the grassy knoll with the rest of the conspiracy theorists!

The OP 'heard the tip', then 'saw it', then figured that 'no damage was done' despite having seen the scrape? Why assume that if you heard AND saw it? Is it possible you didn't see the scrape happening, but heard something, which is not the same as seeing the damage occur. And I'm still not convinced the BMW bumper could cause that type of 'drag' damage.

    Your witness.

    Tell her to drive properly....

If she does it again then she needs some lessons regardless of honesty. You can blame the insurance company or the other drivers for her mistake.

And when the guy walked away i went over to see if there was any damage, i saw it happen, i wasn't looking straight at it for the initial contact, it was the sound that drew my attention, then i saw him reverse scraping the other car. Theres no logic to your argument.

Seriously we are going down this route, of questioning the OP??

I can imagine it happening, and as the OP says he saw the bloke check it out then I'm sure it took place.

OP any chance we can contact both parties and measure up the two cars side by side so some doubt can be removed.

I've posted here and told about being robbed but because i didn't witness it directly, my stuff wasn't robbed, I lost it???

yeah happened me as well , car was recked. you wont be to involved unless the other person denies it. If he owns up it will be settled without you getting involved... these things dont go to court anyway, and the other person will never be given your details. I wouldnt worry too much about it

Well done you, sir! This happened to me ages ago - car was hit while I was doing the shopping. Some good soul, like yourself, left the reg. of the car that hit me and their phone number attached to my window, so the eejit that hit me had to sort it out. €700 worth of damage and I really really couldn't afford that at the time - so thanks to that random witness, I saved €700!

So I'll say it again - Well done, you!
