    Did some sailing on Lough Derg with a friend of mine. Fantastic lake, very underused.I was wondering why no swinging moorings. It would be sheltered on the lake, no tides or swell so boat would be secure. Maybe some moorings, put down and rented out at reasonable cost would allow people like me to keep a small boat on the lake all year round and put business in the way of the pubs, restaurants, chandlers, boat sales/yards etc.Not everyone can afford a marina berth.

    There are moorings; private and yacht club. Also free harbours for short stay. LD has a pretty big fleet with some impressive boats. But make no mistake, Derg can get very rough with a nasty short chop in any sort of bad weather.

    So are there swinging moorings for rental?I know the lake can be rough but no comparison to the open sea.

    I don't know of any swinging moorings for rental but there are a few private ones around! Inniscealtra Sailing Club in Mountshannon have about 30 of them, and there are a few on the way into Dromineer as well!
    As Tabnabs said, it can be a rough enough spot at times, especially between Scariff Bay and Garrykennedy and around Parker Point where the lake is quite wide!
    It really is a beautiful spot though, nothing better than finishing work on a Friday evening and heading off for the weekend!

    As said the lake can get pretty choppy if the wind is coming from the right direction.
    The shannon on design fleet use the lake pretty regularly during the summer and afaik garrykennedy has regular yacht racing every weekend.
    The only swinging moorings i know of are the ones in mountshannon and the several in dromineer bay as mentioned above.
