hi all,was looking at a burke anglers fancy 17 foot boat and thinking about buying, has any one got any opinions on these boats, they don't seem to be as common as the 19 foots, but the smaller size would suit me better.also what size hp,shaft length is recommended ? thanks for any advice

The anglers fancy are a great little boat and well made, the 17 foot would be more suited to rivers and small lakes where as the 19 foot is able to handle a bit more chop.
For engines I'd be looking for 4hp up to 10hp for the 17 foot and up to 15hp for the 19 foot all long shaft and two stroke if you are going to be lifting it on and off.

Thanks for the heads up fergal,i bought the boat today.no I wouldn't be lifting the engine on and off.. Do you know much about the Johnson 5hp 2 stroke 2cylinder engines? I got offered one of these, don't no much about them. Are you sure its a long shaft I need, was led to believe a ss would suit.

If you measure from the top of the transom to the bottom that will tell what length shaft to get 15"- 17" short shaft and 20" - 22" long. But as the keel is so deep on these boats a lot of guys go for the longer shaft as you get better handing and performance, a short shaft will work just maybe not as good. If you want to be 100% sure give them a ring http://www.burkeboats.com or ask in the Angling forum a lot of the guy's there use this type of boat. http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=62 As for the engine it all depends on how it was looked after by the last owners, add into the cost a full service and impeller change before you head out on the water.

That only applies to planing hull boats , lake boats like the anglers fancy are a displacement hull , and most lads use short shaft engines , anything up to 10hp , you will see no difference in performance be it long or short.
