Is it a bad idea to pick a physics based course (physics & astronomy) if I haven't done physics for the leaving cert? I do higher maths and I get B3s/Cs.

You should be fine, in NUIG at least they split the science students into those that have studied physics before and those who haven't, and take the classes at different paces through first year. Wouldn't be surprised if it's done elsewhere.
