The 6th annual Mick Byrne Randonee will take place on Sunday May 26th, starting at Dalkey. As usual there will be three adventurous tours on some of the most beautiful roads in Co Wicklow.
Feed stations provided along the routes to keep your strength up. All in memory of a man who wanted people of all ages to experience the joy, excitement and adventure of cycling! The 100km and 160km are great preparation for the Wicklow 200 and the 200km has over 3000 mtrs of climbing, a true challenge.

If you sign up online can you switch between routes on the day? i.e. if works steals my soul for the next 4 weeks and I don't get enough km in can I downscale from the 200 to the 160? please?

Did this last year and had great fun. Super food stop at Laragh, good company. Alas, I won't get out for it this year but it's in the plan for 2014...

Ah nuts, it clashes with the level one coaching. Did the 100 before, great event.

Did the 200 last year and the 160 the year before.

Great day out if climbing is your thing.

Climbing's not my thing but it was a great day out in any case.

Tis important to understand the philosophy of the Mick Byrne though:

"If there's a choice at any junction, take the steeper (up)hill"...

I noticed that, looking at the route. It's not the big name climbs so much as the evil little humps that are strewn around the place (e.g the Macreddin road). Haven't done this before, but plan to give it a bash (or vice versa).

Aye when I did the Evil 200 last year it contained a bunch of climbs I had never seen before, but LennyMc who was with me would always go, "This was on the Mick Byrne 200!"

The Mick Byrne is simply the best sportif that I have ever done.
The route is simply stunning. Takes in a lot of parts of Wicklow that are not on regular cycling routes.

Excellent feedstops - one in the side of a climb in a forest and one in a school in Laragh. Great selection of fruit and cake.
The weather last year was probably the best day of summer - hit 28 degrees.

I would love to do it again this year but need buy in from Swmbo.

    Would highly recommend this one.

It's a great way of finding new and horrible climbs so you can avoid them in the future. :-)

Relentless from the off. You are climbing minutes from the start and it doesn't let up much for the day.

Much harder than any of the other Wicklow based events. But it's very well organised. Creamed Rice Cones. The food of kings.

I've never done a randonee before, though I've done a couple of 100 + kilometre spins on my own.
Is a helmet required for the Mick Byrne?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11 Sorrento CC

    Yes A Helmet is required!!!

This looks interesting. Does anybody know what kind of numbers usually participate? Like the look at the 100k with 1500m of climbing, nasty!

It varies but seems to be getting bigger and bigger, year on year. I done it first three years ago as quite a slow participant (didn't finish) and the first time I spent on my own was when I switched from the 160 route to the 200km route, I think most do the 160 or 100 so you will have company the whole way around these two routes.

Cheque signed and in post, bring it on, what distances are people going to sign up for?

Anyone thinking of doing this and the Evil 200? I'd like to get a feel for the pacing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,763 ✭✭✭✭Inquitus

Yes I am aiming to use this as a tune up for the evil 200.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 848 ✭✭✭mirv

Might try to follow your wheel, but I think I'll leave entering this as late as possible as I'm wimpy when it comes to weather and triple digit length spins.

Great event. did the 100km last year and brought a few friends new to cycling who all enjoyed it. Overall a great relaxed crowd to chat with while on the roads.

Numbers - small enough, say 150 maybe but not sure. We found that when leaving for the 100 a lot of people had left early presumably with the 160/200 crews so the group was fairly small. Might be worth joining the earlier groups.

Would be doing the 160 this year but out of the country unfortunately.

have fun all who sign up.

Just signed up for my 1st 100k and looking forward to it. Is there a group leader/pace maker? or do we just go about our own thing.
I'm on my own and would prefer to keep in a group especially if the weathers not kind!

In also for the 200. Does everyone doing the 200 normally roll out together at 8am or is it a case of start once registered?

Better for you if you roll out with the group for the 200, packs work better and saves any early mistakes, wrong turns etc. That said, if you arrive late they let you go on the 200 but then you are chasing the group.

The plus side is you qualify for an Audax mdal if you complete it.

I'm thinking of doing the 100 as tune up for the WW200. I know I should really be doing the 160 but i dont have a car and will be travelling out by dart so the earliest I could make it would be to register and start the 100. I was just wondering would it be worthwhile doing the 100 as prep for the ww200?. How tough is the 100km route?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 414 ✭✭LennoxR

I fancy doing the 160 as training for w200. Do I have to pre-register or can I do it on the day?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 364 ✭✭Konkers

@lennoxr, Check the website link in the OP. I thought it said that u have to pre register.

Looking toward to the day itself. An full day in the saddle. Hmmmmm.

I see in the entry form that they want your club and license number. Since I don't have either of these, am I eligible?

You are. If you have no club you write Unattached in the club section and if you have no CI license (a leisure one is all you need) you will have to pay for a day license (usually around 10% of entrance fee for a leisure event if I recall correctly.

    Hi LennoxR,

You are eligible for the Mick Byrne. You dont need to be in a club, and as this is a charity event your one day license is covered by Cycling Ireland for free. So sign up and put in the box N/A for club and license.

In for the 160km,at a push. Not enough miles in the legs this year to tackle the 200km route.

Is the Dalkey football clubhouse near the train station as i will have the get the 1st train on the Sunday morning out to Dalkey ( i don't have a car) and dont fancy cycling from the North county area to Dalkey before taking on the 160km spin

It's about 5 mins on the bike.

It's about 2km from train to clubhouse, downhill all the way. Mind you, that's pretty much the last downhill you'll see for some time...

From the train station, head downhill and turn left into the main street. About 1-1.5km there's a castle on your right and 100m or so beyond that there's a square roundabout (fully built up). Turn right there and the start is on your left.

Registered for the 200 over the weekend. The works 'relentless' and 'brutal' are cropping up way too much in what I've read. What have I let myself in for?

Will be packing the spare tyre this time (the one for the wheel, not the belly:pac:). A rescue mission deep in the Wicklow hills could tip her over the edge.....

Registered but no idea why! Have only cycled twice since late last year and they were just short spins! Oh well, at least the money is going to charity and I can bail around Roundwood if I make it that far! :)

Registering, really could not decide whether the 100k or 160k , 160k would be my longest and highest vertical so bricking it a bit...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,036 ✭✭✭Surveyor11

register for the 160, only a few sleepless nights left to worry about it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 588 ✭✭✭t'bear

Always opt for the longest, plenty of bailout points if the legs fail you!

I'd like to do the 100, but I need to be home as early as possible.

Is it feasible to leave at 8 with the 200 group and split off to the 100 route when the time comes?
I realise I'd be alone for a good chunk of the ride - no problem there
