I need help too I haven't a clue and i have my interview in May! I have looked everywhere for answers and I can't find them :( I was thinking that it would have something to do about Biology anyway..

    Hey!

I'm also going for the course too. My interview is 22nd of May. I'm changing from my old course and if I don't get it ill be out of college for a year so I really need and want it ! I know someone who went for it 2/3 years ago and it was group interview because there was over 400 turned up. She said she can remember they had statues and you had to name parts but she couldn't remember. I'd say biology would be a main part though.

Lets hope for the best! :)

heya im in st johns studying vet nursing . i had the interview last year its really easy its basic biology questions like what vit is in an orange, what is an artery a vein , know dog breeds. Its a one person interview and the questions asked are all about why you think you should get a place and what is vet nursing all about..good luck :)

Great to hear. Thanks for the heads up :D

    Hey all,
I did the interview for Level 5 Animal Care there last year. You really need to have experience working in a Vets. It's the first thing they ask, and these applicants are put ahead of people without it. When I went for my interview they told me they were interviewing over 300 people, so it's very competitive. If you have experience working in animal welfare or anything and not veterinary, do go on about that as much as you can. If you have time, run to the vets now and try and get in so you can tell them you are doing work experience.
They also just asked me questions like why I was interested in doing the course, did I know about all the modules on the course etc. The interviews were one on one.
The test was easy. It was done on the computer, and the questions were tick the box types ones. Some of the questions I remember were there was a picture of a group of cows and you had to tick which breed they were from the list, a picture of a dog and you had to tick the breed, what does IKC mean, a diagram of a dog's organs with an arrow pointing to one section and you had to tick what the organ was....that's all I can remember but it was all questions like that.

    Good luck!

    Hey guys,

I have also applied to St. John's College to do Veterinary Nursing Level 5 this September 2013. Because I will not be back in the country until August, IF AND ONLY IF interviews go ahead again in August, will I be called for one. I am guaranteed an interview in August if they go ahead.

I understand interviews for this course are being held today and other days at St. John's College. Has anyone got any info on the interview and the online test? Please? :):) Any info is gratefully appreciated, thanks.

    Hey guys!
Just got my letter recently for my interview - 27th of august at 9.30, anyone else at this time?

I can't believe you have to know breeds etc., I mean I know you've to have an understanding in animals already but I don't know cow breeds! And I know probably the most basic dog breeds. Where I'm from there's no opportunity to work in a vets :( It's a bit unfair really, the reason I want to do this course in the first place is to expand my knowledge and my experience :/

So how did everyone do in their interview? I've applied this year and am waiting to hear about an interview. Anyone got any tips? I'm working in getting experience and should hopefully be starting on Saturday. Other than that do you have any tips? Thanks!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38 bingie

Get as much experience as you can preferably in a veterinary surgery. They'll be looking at how many hours you've done in comparison to other applicants. Also learn what modules are on the course and what you expect to be learning. Even the stuff like customer service and that. If you go into the interview and arn't sure of these they might think you're just someone who wants to work with animals with no real clue what you want to do.

Also prepare for the test. We had questions about what breed of cow was on the picture, name the organs on this dog and where vitamin C comes from. It's not too difficult a test but there is alot of competition for the veterinary nursing so best to do as well as you can. I did the interview last year as a mature student and only got listed for it, most likely because of limited work experience. I've ended up doing the canine studies instead which is still good so keep your options open if you can.

I've applied too, would love to get in but not getting my hopes up because of the huge amounts of people applying. I'm currently working on getting work experience but so far no vets have an opening near me so will have to look a bit further away :( have already worked in a vets for 2 years but finished in 2011 and did a fetac level 5 small animal care course from 2011/2012 but my results weren't great (accomodation/car issues = bad attendance, only got 1 distinction and 2 or 3 merits :O ) did another level 5 course since and got 5 distinctions and 3 merits, would that be favourable even though it wasn't anything to do with animals it was still nursing studies?

I currently work with dogs from home but am going to try and get work experience in a vets and also volunteer with a animal sanctuary regularly as well. Anyone that'd done the interview, what would you recommend studying? I am good enough with dog/horse/cow breeds because I'm used to being around them anyway and just interested for myself and other general stuff, but not sure what biology or anatomy & physiology I should be studying as they are both huge area's to cover!! :/

For anyone who has / will be applying for Animal Care - none of these questions came up on the science based test for me, which I did today. The interview, the part I was most nervous for, was easy - the people are really friendly. But the test was another story. No vit.c question, or ikc, or pictures of cows or dogs, or dog anatomy. It was a totally random quiz, with questions I barely knew the answers to. I can't expect many of the people who took it today like I did knew much of the answers either, they were pretty stupid tbh. Maybe the college had seen everyone talk about it and changed it completely. Hopefully the quiz doesn't matter - if I was getting marked on the interview I'd say I'd have aced it!

I had mine yesterday for Veterinary Nursing. I was very nervous for the interview and don't really remember much of what I said :pac:

As for the test, some of the questions I found very easy, others were a bit more difficult. Some were science-y, others I found a bit more general knowledge (what catagory does this breed of dog belong to, what part of the government overlooks animals etc). One anatomy question regarding the name of a joint, question about spread of illness, question about poison.

I think you can only categorize them as general knowledge if you have a tv or listen to the radio. I have neither of these things, so for the questions where it asked about stuff that was "recent", I had no clue for. The category for the breed of dog was easy, yes, but then the poison one and the spread of illness was a different story. Unless your parent/s is a vet or you work with animals in some way yourself, how are you to know?

CaoimheCweeva was it Veterinary Nursing you applied for? My applicant status says 'Waiting List' and I was hoping that it was temporary status whilst they were reviewing the applicants...

No it was the Companion & Captive Animal Studies course. Everyone says Vet nursing is really competitive so I wouldn't worry about it too much, I was told they had 400 people to interview so it'll probably take another day or so for them to get through them all! :) Good luck!

honerbright, did you get an update on your enrol status? I'm just really anxious to find out if Waiting List is just the status of the application (i.e. waiting for decision to be made) or if I'm actually on the waiting list... Thanks!

Hi, I had my interview on Monday and my status is also waiting list. Does anyone know what this means
ok just looked up their admissions process and on a waiting list means there are more applicants than places...which we already knew so it doesnt mean much really. I was told they would be hoping to send out offer letter next week but even they admitted this was pretty optimistic and it would more than likely be the following weekend

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38 bingie

With waiting list statuses you're best contacting the college and finding out where in the list you are if you've not heard anything after about 2 weeks. A friend of mine last year was 2nd on the list and didn't find out until end of August time. They seem to only send out the letters if you have actually been successful or are sending you an offer for your second choice.

Good luck with the courses though, hardest part is definitely over :)

Yeah, unfortunately I mine says "place not offered".
I was applying as a mature student (I'm 26) and work full time as an assistant manager (which I told them) so have no recent volunteering experience so that obviously didn't go in my favour :(

Good luck to the rest of ye though and congrats to those who did get their course :)

Hi guys, has anyone gotten an offer letter yet? My status still says waiting list so I called the college today but they couldnt give me any info. They said the letters are still being sent out but couldnt tell me where I was on the waiting list

Status still says waiting list as well and college said all letters would be sent out soon but that they were busy after exams etc. Next week hopefully - at interview was told it could be up to 3 weeks to hear back anyway.

Hey, I am very late applying (this week) I was told I have a slim to one chance as places are already been allocated from interviews held in May. I am just wondering did you have any qualifications or was it just previous experience they went on.

I have a degree in equine science but really want to do veterinary nursing. Like you I have been working full time and its not financially viable to volunteer at places. I am working on getting a car at the moment to expand my potential workplace range.

Have you thought about any other avenues?? I seen in Green Mount in Antrim they offer and apprenticeship style course. Your attend college 2 days per week and work the rest but its 2000 to do the course.

I really want to do this but its proving so difficult. :/

No, nothing. I'm afraid we won't know until September, on the website it says 'Any remaining places will be offered in August/September.' :/

I think that's for any people who are interviewed for the waiting list - I had mine last August and was told that if there was a place for me, I'd have to wait until late September

Has anybody called the college to see where they are on the list? I called last week but they werent very forthcoming with the info.
Im waiting to hand my notice in at work if I get an offer. Want to move home and save for a few months before starting college.
If I knew I was was fairly low on the list Id nearly take my chances and hand my notice in now.

Called the college today. Apparently the Animal Care team are gone as it is the end of the Academic Year and the letters are being sent out in batches. Not very helpful

Anyone got any information on the Captive and Companion Animal Studies course?

Like, how big are the classes? It's 4 days at college and 1 day at a work placement, right? What day of the week is at work?(Or when do we find out, trying to sort out something now for it)

And another, how are FETAC courses marked? Is it 100% course work, or what?

I'm doing that course.. no idea where we can find out info on it. I've still to go into the college with my pink card that says I got accepted, medical card etc. for registration pt. 2...I guess you can ask any questions you have there?

I think they sort out the work placement for us. I'm not 100% sure though, but other than veterinary clinics, there aren't much choices, and I don't want to be a vet :P But I really don't think you have to start worrying about it now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38 bingie

I did the canine husbandry but it was similar to the captive animal course. The classes had about 20 of us in total and work was based over coursework with exams at the end of the year. Our small animals class was 30% assessment, 30% coursework and 40% exam for instance. Only a few classes didn't have exams at the end ie customer service, internet and the work experience/communications classes
Work experience has to be sorted by yourself and you don't find out your day for it until first day of college. It's best to ring a placement and have them put you down for September and then just let them know at the start what day you're in for otherwise you're competing against all the other classes. I know ours had 2 days work experience which was impossible to sort at the last minute.
