Usual BMW stuff of fiddling with the front end, tweaks to iDrive and 518D on the way. Production from July, sales September.

Already at the LCI point on the F10!?
    Still seems so new.

    518D:eek:

Who thought of that? Another green initiative? If it's demand(and probably is), then we're definitely turning into sheep.

Would the 518d not still a lot of sales from the the 3 series?

In fairness rear seat room in the 3 is poxy.

Whats the point of a 518d? Same engine no doubt, detuned to save 50 quid a year on tax?

Might be €50 here and lower VRT but I'm sure they are chasing other markets with this, most likely fleet sales.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,411 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

If it is the same engine that is in the 3 Series then it will still have 143bhp unless they up it specifically for the 5 Series.

Would a 518d even pull the skin of a rice pudding it's a heavy car for a weedy engine. Only proper bmw engine IMO is a 6 cyclinder

Like the lower half of the bumper slitter area,

Despise the top part. I prefer the old one.

518d? Yep the worlds gone mad. A 520d is underpowered enough as it is for such a big car.

Just guessing here but I'd venture to say that the vast majority of cars on Irish roads have considerably less power than a 520d. Same goes for the power to weight ratio and 0-100kmph times

Very true but a 5 series is an expensive luxury car and the 4 cylinder diesel definatly takes away from the driving experience because of how underpowered it is so an even weaker engine just seems to completly defeat the purpose of such a refined machine.

A very valid point was made that perhaps the 518d is aimed at fleet car sales but other than those I would have thought that the average f10 buyer would have enough cash to run a 520d at the very least. They are an incredibly frugal engine as it is and the tax is very low on them as well

Saw a 12TS 535d yesterday, rare as hen's teeth. Preferred the twin exhausts on one side on the E60 though.

A 518d. Jesus wept. I test drove the e60 177bhp 520d and found it very sluggish. A 518d would struggle to keep up with a 1.6 tdi golf?!

Bit of further information on the LCI came through yesterday.

All LCI models will come with Xenon's and Business Navigation as standard. Along with SE and M-Sport, there is now a Luxury model - think there is also a Modern version, but don't have any info on that.

518d is coming, and will be a band A2 vehicle. No idea on price point, but should come in below the 520ED (which I don't have figures for either).

But the big benefit is that any 520's ordered now, for July / August delivery will get Automatic for Free. That means you can now buy a 520d Auto, with Nav and Xenon's, for July delivery, for less than the current model costs.

the 520d has 184 bhp and 280 lbs/ft torque. It does 0-100 in 8.1 in manual and auto. given the weight it is carrying and how frugal it is. I wouldnt consider it a slouch. Its not exactly 10sec +... The vast majoroty of people buying these want the 131 bmw 5 series in the drive way for the cheapest possible cost and running cost. If they wanted a "proper" bmw, they could get a year old one with better spec and proper straight six petrol for far cheaper... The new 131 520d will impress the neighbours, the 2012 M5 in the driveway probably wont... Unless they know about their cars, which the vast majority here dont, they only see the badge on the bonnet and number plate...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,720 ✭✭✭✭R.O.R

Irish Times is wrong. First LCI models will land late July - going in to production at the start of July.

I had this conversation recently after buying an e60 535.

Pricing is on my desk, so I'll put it up tomorrow.

I think it's somewhere around €1,500, so less than the cost of the additional extra's you get.

The bigger issue is weight and size. The F10 is bigger again, which harms the "chuckability" of any car.

I bought an E60 520D so there would be space for the family. If it was just me, I'd have gone 320D, but not because of "more poke", the test drives just did not reveal a whole lot more "poke" as you feel it.

I agree that the 4 pot diesel is a rough old beast, and it harms the character of what should be a refined drive.

I'd like to see manufacturers tuning cars for a spread of torque, not BHP. Who the heck revs a diesel above 3,000rpm ?

    Surf the torque people...

Current 520d SE Manual is €44,720, but that's more or less been discontinued and replaced with the ED at €44,500.

LCI 520 SE is coming in at €46,416 (not the ED - that should be a bit cheaper). As Auto is Free for orders now, you'd be stupid to go manual. Current 520d SE Auto is €47,020, so there's a saving of just over €600 and additional specification, for July/August deliveries.

Sluggish? Really??.. 177 bhp and 8.3 from 0-100kmh does not sound too sluggish

350nm torque is also a plentiful amount which should give it decent enough in gear performance.

Theyre not sports cars figures but definitely not sluggish

Larger engines from different manufacturers would struggle to match

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,038 ✭✭✭ian87

Yes, I have a 177bhp 320d and I don't exactly feel its very fast. Herself has the 140 bhp lump in her a3 and that feels a lot faster. The torque is spread out across the power band far more in the BMW, whereas it comes in one lump in the Audi. Dropping down a gear isn't needed in the audi where as it is the BMW. You really need to rev the BMW hard to get anything out of it, which is fine but on my motorway commute I prefer to be able to have the torque on tap rather than needing to find the sweet spot when overtaking etc.

Agreed, it is all about flexibility... I drove a 320D (177bhp) and, despite being lighter, it did not feel quicker than my 520D. Just a bit more chuck-able.

However, you still have to deal with torque steer from the Audi.

I actually like the linear torque delivery of the BMW diesels - makes the cars feel more petroly.

A facelift usually means standard equipment increases which generally incur an increase in price. The free upgrade to an auto for a limited time is good.

As Bazz said, there is usually a price increase for a facelift, especially if it comes with additional standard equipment.

Depending which way you look at it, it could be considered that the LCi is cheaper than the outgoing model for the same specification. Business Nav was €2,354 and Xenon's were €1,384, so to get those 2 as standard and only increase by €1,700 is pretty good - if you wanted those options :pac:

If anyone is interested, an Autocar drive of the venerable 518d is here

We'll never see another 520d again on this country now. No need when people bought those for the sake of having a BMW, its a perception thing. I'd wager that the majority of diesel 5 series sold in this market next year will now be the 518d

We'll get leather all right, but we're not getting sat navigation so expect to see plenty more tiny screens with cheap nasty plastic inserts. I've definitely seen at least one on the road. There's two new 5 series that I run into nearly every day in the past week. Both debaged and they ain't 535s.

Doesn't get them here either, at least on the pre LCI model. I've been in a few without them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 701 ✭✭✭carsfan

The first of the F10 5 series didn't have heated seats, but after a few months they were added to the standard spec along with a usb port. There was a price rise too to allow for this. It is on models built after July 2010 I think and is the same in UK and Ireland

I thought it was just navigation and the auto not being a zero cost option. It was back in may when I read it... Could be Pro navigation now that I think of it.
