    hi,

I have a fibre glass boat with damage to the hull. It seems only surface damage. The fibre glass is exposed with the smooth finish gone. What can I do to restore this smooth surface finish.

You can get a gelcoat repair kit in most marine shops and do something like this.

If the hole is very deep you might have to build it up with fiberglass cloth first before you add the gelcoat. If you put up some photos I might be able to help a bit more.

just on the same topic, what can you use to mix with that filler to match the gel coat colour? does anyone sell small tubes of gel coat over here to mix with the filler?

Gelcoat filler "Plastic padding" comes in white to match your gelcoat it might be a bit bright if yours is sun faded.
You can get colour kits but there is not much demand for it in Ireland as most boats here are white where as in the US they go for a mixed colours, Ebay is your best bet.
You can sometimes get away with mixing a small bit of paint with epoxy and it will still set fine, your other option is to just paint over your repair and blend it in.

That looks like a standard repair as the damage was caused by wear and tear, if the damage was osmosis it would be a bit more work.
Just make sure the fiberglass is dry and clean where the gelcoat is missing before you repair it.

There are lots of tips and videos in dnme's post that are worth a look. http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056217528&page=12

    Hi
For matching the correct gel colour I would reccomend that you call to Liam Phelan iin Marine and Industrial in Baldonnell. http://www.glassfibre.ie
He has matched a lot of different colurs for me over the years.
Depending on the type of repair he may add fillers or flo coat to the mix.
Generally if you have a sample of the colour that would do for matching.
