This might be of some interest to people. Forms available on hyc.ie

"On Sunday 5th May Howth Yacht Club is having an Open Day, in conjunction with the Irish Sailing Associations National "Sail Spree" weekend and is extending invitations to people of all abilities and ages to "Come Boating". If you have ever wondered what it would be like to go boating or sailing this is your opportunity.

Between the hours of 12 noon and 5pm members of the Club will be available to take you afloat in a variety of craft, answer your questions as to how to get involved and give you a tour of the Club and its many facilities.
It is not necessary to own a boat to get afloat as members are continually requiring crew and owners are more than prepared to train new crew.

Between motor boating, leisure sailing, racing, junior sailing or helping in organising the many varied events throughout the year there has to be a slot to suit you. The charge for the day of 5 applies to individuals or families.

If you are interested please complete the enrolment form below or call into the Office by Thursday 2nd May"

An open day is a nice idea, but charging to attend seems an odd concept.

I'd hazard a guess that it's to make you a member for the day, thus covering you under the club's insurance. I'd imagine that the insurance says they can't have crowds of non-members using their facilities.

It's a good idea IMO. Cuts out the timewasters and those who have no interest who just amble in off the pier.

Had completely overlooked the insurance angle. Good point. If that's the case though, I'd have added the briefest note to explain.

As to cutting out the time wasters. Yep, maybe so. I've limited experience of organising kind of event, so that makes sense also.

Thanks for enlightening me guys. Ya gotta love boards for people helping people :)

If anyone from HYC reads this, best of luck with your open day. Sailing is a fabulous sport and everyone ought to give it a go, at least once :)

Went to this today, had the most fantastic time, am a bit hooked.

The 5e was to cover food as they laid on a barbeque.

Just wanted to say thanks again for posting this and thanks to any HYC members who happen to see this was a great day. We got great weather for it, sunny and nice bit of breeze but not too much either.

I've never sailed at all before and got to go out on a J/80 and a Puppeteer and really enjoyed it. Nice barbeque and everyone was very friendly. Bit worried though I'm after spending the morning looking up all different sailing terms, I may have caught the bug.
