I've recently moved to Maynooth and I'm looking for a club. I'm interested in some racing and group training cycles but I don't have many miles in the legs this year.

Lucan Cycling Club is pretty close to you. Organised spins leave from Lucan every Saturday morning. Usually 3 groups, catering for beginners, sportive riders and racers. All the info on www.lucancrc.com

Clonard road club also close by, they meet just outside enfield. check out www.clonardroadclub.com

Thanks for the replies! I'll try to make the LCC group because I'm a big fan of Stagg Cycles.

I was talking to Ciaran Kelly (ex Sean Kelly Cycling Team) at Bikeworx, Celbridge - they are running rides Wednesdays at 18:30 and Saturdays at 10:00, might join up with one of those myself (handy for Maynooth)

They've a ride on tomorrow, meeting at the shop (off Celbridge Main St.) at 10:00am, doing a handy 60km-ish, no big hills. I'm gonna to tag along, any other Boardsies in the neighbourhood?

    Hey,
    Did you do that cycle?
Was there many in the group? Average speed? Everyone have racing bikes?!
    So many questions:)

    Good idea.
In answer to your previous post, I did that right, it was a handy 42km and not mad fast (the north wind was brutal tho). About half a dozen riders, mixed abilities, one hybrid the rest were road bikes.

Would you be surprised to know that the largest cycling club in the country is based in Maynooth ????

    Yes. Do tell. Ontario???

No, it's not a trick question.

Every cyclist who signs up to do the annual Galway Cycle (www.galwaycycle.ie) becomes a member of the Maynooth Students for Charity club.

This year at least 50 new members joined the Club.

I would be interested in joining a Maynooth Club if it ever set up.

Can you be a member of 2 clubs at the same time?

Please let me know if you set up a club in Maynooth. I'd be a beginner though. (just the thought of 42kms gave me palpitations) :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 64 ✭✭Mua

Right so.... How does one go about setting up a club? Just arrange a time and place to meet and see who turns up??

I've been cycling more over the last month training for a charity thing but need the motivation of a group to keep it up. Would love to go for a cycle maybe a couple of times a week. Shorter ones during the week and a longer one at weekends?
Perfect time to start one up for the glorious weather we're about to have;)

Stubborn mule sportive that day, else I'd be in, alright.
There will prob be a gang going from BikeWorx on Celbridge main street Sat morning (give Noel or Ciarán a call on (01) 627 5779 to check) - they do that kind of distance. The shop is apparently moving to a bigger premises there at Applegreen soon, and they've promise to install a coffee machine and a couple of tables...

All they need to complete the shop is to install some comfy sofas, a coffee table with the latest cycling mags (with a few shelves on the wall holding all the previous editions), a sandwich counter and a large TV showing just cycling programs :D

I would be on for this. Been doing Maynooth, Dunboyne, Summerhill, Kilcock, Clane, Barbertown, Maynooth this week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 64 ✭✭Mua

Great! Sounds like two good options!
Haven't done too many hills or many long cycles so it'll be a challenge but I accept;)
About 2-3 hours cycling or am I way off?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 82 ✭✭Jules_G

It's a bit much for me - I'll give this a miss, but hope you all enjoy it :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,437 ✭✭✭wirelessdude01

What would people be ok with? Be good to get a local group going and can build on from that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 64 ✭✭Mua

I agree wireless! It's all about getting a local group together that can hopefully meet regularly;)

I remember my first spin over to Leixlip and back. It nearly killed me at an average speed of 21km!! Now can do 70km spins at an average depending on the wind of 26-29km per hour. Just get out 3/4 times a week which is what I try. Some weeks I manage that, others I don't.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 434 ✭✭kildarecommuter

Cant do this sat but would be interested the following sat morning .
    .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 64 ✭✭Mua

My average speed is 22-25kph and that's with no hills and little wind!!

Jules, The spins I've been doing over the last few weeks have only been 25km long too. I have done a long one in may but that was with many breaks:)

The group that do the Galway cycle from the college continue cycling through the summer after the event itself. They are generally happy enough to let anyone join in at any time of year, just drop them an email and they can add you to the training mailing list. We always stay as a group with the pace determine by the ability of the group that day.

I'm good with that version, it's a good starting point, not too long but a hill challenge ;)

Count me in. Where will we meet?

  • Users Awaiting Email Confirmation Posts: 1,227 ✭✭✭rp

Cool, how about meeting up at BikeWorx in Celbridge main st. at 10:00? Its on the planned route, and a couple of groups start off from there, so we might pick-up a few more for this ride, too (plus I need to get a spare tube, first...)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,330 ✭✭✭✭Amz

If I can i'll pop over for this.

Have to fix a puncture and stock up on a few bits in order to head out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 64 ✭✭Mua

    10am is good for me.
I'll start from maynooth, be a shame to bring the car out, so ill have 25% done by the time I get there:))
Are we meeting in front of bike shop? Off the Main Street??

  • Users Awaiting Email Confirmation Posts: 1,227 ✭✭✭rp

It's gonna be a warm day, so remember to drink lots tonight....

Hi folks , I just came across this thread , I have just started cycling in the last couple of months and have been doing routes around celbridge maynooth kilcock summerhill dunboyne leixlip , I find without company it is hard to keep motivated , I think organising group cycles is a great idea , I live in leixlip myself , unfortunately I wouldn't be able to join in tomorrow due to work but would love to join in next time , I look forward to reading about how you all get on tomorrow .
    Enjoy and stay safe .

Hey Jules... I'm a beginner female cyclist doing roughly the same distances as you at the moment! Maybe there are more beginners and we could get a thing going? Or even pair up ourselves with a view to eventually being able to join the more hard core cyclists!!!! PM me if you're interested!

Would you not just get out there with the others and go for it , nobody is going to fly off and leave you , I think the idea of being with others would help you push yourself and not give up as easy , I think that everyone helps each other .
