I'm wondering why there's a post-doc option? At that stage it's just a job, albeit a specialised one that keeps changing, but there are many jobs where you continue learning.

That's 5 years I'll never get back. Nor will I ever get back the five years of hard labor working to pay off the college loans. Though Industrial Design falls under the Arts, I took college level physics and engineering courses and had several projects that required engineering and mechanical knowledge. My favorite was building a go cart using a 500cc Motorcycle engine I got from a junkyard that nearly got me and two others killed. The only place in work I have used my background was when I redesigned an Ultra Sound patient positioning system for radiotherapy. I guess some of my engineering background comes in handy when I port chainsaws. Otherwise, I have been mostly a Unix Sysadmin and a Logger/forester. Go figger(Well, I worked in forestry during the summers to pay my way thru college). If I weren't such an idiot, I woulda got my degree in forestry instead. A curse of coming from an industrial design background is I quickly find issues with the ergonomics, usability, aesthetics, and interface of objects and programs. It's a bit annoying and just makes me feel like a geek.

Honestly don't think I would be able for a phd now . Brain is mush . Also I didn't breeze through my education. It didn't come naturally to me I had to work hard at it. I made a mistake with my choice of subject. Perhaps if I was doing something I liked it would have been easier for me. No bragging here. Found it hard going and lucky to come out with what I did .
