Folks, I (along with a friend) own a small wooden boat. We can't be sure of the age but at this point it is in need of some repairs and a good paint job.

We are dropping it down to Brendan Tracey in Arklow to take a close look at it and give us a price for replacing some of the ribs and damage to a "stringer". (I think that is what he called it)

One thing that is immediately apparent is the need to paint and varnish the boat, the paint is flaking a lot and I was wondering what is the best way to take the paint off? I think the boat will need to go back to bare wood to be properly painted. See pics,

Hi Firstin "nice boat" You have a few options you can use, first off as your paint is so bad I would start with a high output power washer and see how much you can get off, next I would try a heat gun and scraper or just sanding. If you go with paint stripper you have to make sure you give it a good cleaning before painting.
As clinker builds have so many nooks and crannies it takes a long time to get back to the bare wood so sometimes it can be worth thinking about getting it vapour or soda blasted, it can be expansive but when you think about the time, effort and bits and pieces you will need it can be worth it.
