Brand Snobbery...

Since we have the "brand loyalty" thread, I'd say this would fit in well :)

What brand(s) cars you'd never drive? What we're looking for here is totally IRRATIONAL snobbery, silly stuff that is likely preventing you from considering very good cars when buying one. Sensible considerations such as value, refinement and reliability are strictly forbidden; Things like "looks like an ironing board" or "reminds me of an horrible job I had as a teenager" are what we're looking for :)

I'll start -with the exception of a Mazda 6 an perhaps an Honda Accord, I'd never buy a Japanese car. The "normal" ones remind me of kitchen appliances, the sporty models...look like the toy cars from that "Mini 4WD" cartoon years ago :)

Personally it doesn't matter what the badge says so long as the I believed the model I chose was decent and did what I wanted of it although I wouldn't put my own money into certain makes new unless the car was something special.

wouldnt buy anything unreliable ie nothing italian or french

Although I like to flatter myself that the opinions of others don't affect me, I think i'd have real trouble being seen getting out of a newer Ferrari. Great cars i'm sure, but what a trashy image.

Anything French, both peugeot and citroen have far too many needless electonics and sensors that always break, and due to one tiny sensor your abs is shut off

its not exciting but it does the job. my last car was becoming a bottomless pit for money and was broken again so it was time to change. I wanted a volvo s40 or mondeo. Needed to change in hurry so ended up with the avensis. I would still prefer the other two but the avensis is alright

I'd never buy a normal audi, ie: non S/RS versions as I just see a vw Bora/passat

*I will never afford an S/RS so will prob never have an Audi

Comfort, reliability and good mpg are not high on my list of priorities when buying a car. Life if too short to drive something as boring as an avensis.

I'd rather walk than drive a Ford Focus.

Its the one car out there i really hate.

Would never drive a Skoda and wouldn't go near a VRS with a 50 foot pole.

From having owned a lot of older Mercs and being a big fan of them in the past I don't think I could buy that they have on the market today. Styling is awful IMO, too complicated electronics leading to failures and high maintenance.

I've had a number of E28's which i regard as being one of the most underrated cars of all time but the kind of people who drive them today would turn me off ever owning a newer one.

Toyota Corolla goes into that camp too, though the Auris I would have. Corolla seems to be driven by people who i just don't like.

Qashqai and Juke belong there too.

bmw / Mercedes : drug dealers toys,

    french, Italian cars: unreliable.

Toyota : bland and too common.

skoda, vw + audi : same cars different badges.

    opel: muck altogether

ford, too plain and very common

I set my sights snobbery a little lower - wouldn't buy an Audi that didn't have the S-Line extras.

No to Toyota, BMW, Audi, and anything French or Italian.

Some nice cars in them, but all ten a penny on Irish roads.

Anything Korean. Soul-less, miserable, horrible looking stuff to me.

The Japs produce some fairly epic cars so naturally the Irish mainly go out of their way to find the dullest, blandest examples of Jap stuff they can find and ram it up in everyone elses face

No unreliable stuff for me so French and Italians are out..... :pac::pac::pac::pac::pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 794 ✭✭✭mikewest

Not so much a brand as an individual car. Toyota corolla, I have a totally irrational hatred of them despite having driven rentals of them and found them to be solid reliable economical enough but boring car. I've even owned a rearwheel drive version in the distant past but nowadays I'd drive anything else in preference even a shaggin Opel Corsa or Nissan Micra.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,225 ✭✭✭JCDUB

Anything Ford, particularly Mondeos and Focuses though.

Couldn't drive one because they're so dull I think their drivers have to lack a soul, or any enjoyment in their lives, whatsoever.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,411 ✭✭✭ABajaninCork

    No to:
    Citroen
    Renault
    Fiat
    KIA
    Dacia

Used to be 'No' to Hyundai too. But have driven an i30, and they're not too bad. Wouldn't buy one though...:P

Could be 'sweeping generalisation of the year' material!
While not a very exciting car i would say the owners range from those who simply dont give a feck to those who simply dont give a feck!

I personally will never ever drive a renault or peugeot again! Small breakdowns come with a whole load of different pain when you have kids! I'll gladly take boring toyotas for now. I simply cannot afford random breakdowns, either hassle wise or financially!

Opinion though should have some relevance to personal experience rather than just repeating sweeping generalisations heard down the pub. For example, of those here who said they wouldn't touch a French or Italian car, how many of these actually ever owned either as opposed to basing their opinion on what they were told by a brother's friend's father.

I had a Peugeot 206. Fantastic car, which only gave me trouble after I brought it over here! The state of Irish roads leave a LOT to be desired...

I sold the car in the end. The cost of parts here is stupidly expensive. That is the only reason why I didn't get another Peugeot.

The cost of your car breaking being too expensive is a fairly big black mark against the car. I know a few people with non french cars with over 250K on the clock and they are going strong. Maybe you buying a french car instead of something solid and not the roads are to blame.

No, I don't think so. A fact confirmed by the mechanic...

Strange that Japanese and German car drivers dont seem to complain about the roads breaking their cars

But I agree, Had a 306 before and the dashboard decided it was gona catch fire while i was driving home one night

Drove a toyota the other day and hated every minute of it, so anything french or jap is out of the question for me

    Or vw's...hate vw's

I'd never buy a mini or a fiat 500, only coz I'm a man. If yorkies are not for girls, these cars are not for men!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,499 ✭✭✭Seweryn

I do not mind the bland, boring, but functional cars. I wouldn't buy (and wouldn't like to be seen in) a pointless car, like:

    - Any X-series BMW (what's the point of these useless yokes?),
    - Nissan Qukashkay or whatever the name,
    - Nissan Juke,
    - Etc...

You kidding me? I wouldn't have given a second glance to anything Asian the last ten tears or so but recently I've been doing double takes at fine looking cars only to see they or Kia / Hyundai. Would seriously considering buying one in the future.

If you said Toyota I would agree but I think Fords are pretty good looking cars and nice enough places to be. The Focus hatch is definitely a decent looking car, the Mondeo ain't bad, heck, even the new Fiesta is half-decent.

I need to buy a new daily soon enough and after driving my fathers Mondeo to Mayo and back recently I was really surprised at how nice it was to drive and it has really good road holding. The only thing stopping me is they're not quite good enough looking for me.

Nope. Can't stand them. Just my opinion though, what I see both inside and out doesn't do it for me.

Good, bad, indifferent. Not warming to them.

    I'd sooner walk tbh!

A lot of badge snobs here. I dont really care what I drive but it must be comfy, lots of toys, reliable and economical.

I have to agree with Anan1 though I wouldn't drive a Ferrari or something silly like that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,072 ✭✭✭keithsfleet

I swore blind I'd never drive anything Asian that's not Japanese.
Was looking at a hyundai accent for a friend last week and after test driving it I had to ask the seller to scrub me down with some Castrol.
It got awkward but I'm pretty certain it helped with the haggling.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,704 ✭✭✭Cheensbo

I'd never say never when it comes to cars, excepting maybe a tata or something of that ilk. Each manufacturer has its strengths and weaknesses imo.. Also heavily depends on why you are buying a car, and what for...

I like to buy cars that dont make sense, and arent fit for purpose, but dont always have the freedom to do so, next motor will be a silly one though biggrin.png

I'm astounded at the extent of the anti-toyotaism eek.png

It seems that most of ye think they only make aurises and avensises (avensii??)

Let me post some of my favourites to try and diminish the opinion that all toyotas are dull and bland:

I wouldnt touch German cars, far too common and normal, dont like french cars and hate most FIATs, Korean cars still have a cheap image to me even though they are looking better each year. Volvo, Sabb and a few American muscle cars are acceptable, but Japanese cars are the best IMO. Great design and good performance.
